You can add more dimension to the image and get a 3D effect by leaving some space between the layers or by making them thicker (for instance, by using mounting tape instead of glue). You can also use card stock in different shades or in different colors & patterns.

The recommended size of the project if you make it from card stock using Cricut / Silhouette is around 8" on the longer side. Smaller projects might be difficult or impossible to cut from card stock, due to the thickness of the top layer's lines.
