Planting Instructions:

Soil Preparation:

Choose an area with heavy, well-draining soil that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Remove weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Leave small weeds and dead grass, they will enrich the soil when turned under. Spade or till the soil 6-8 inches deep. Loosening the soil will help the plant establish strong roots. If the soil is heavy or clay-like, mix in some sand or compost to improve drainage. Optionally, form rows of soil beds 4-6 inches high and at least 2 feet apart. This formation of ridges will help with drainage, ensure good airflow, and make harvesting for cut flowers easier. Lay down 1/2"-3/4" peat moss, sawdust, or potting soil, the soil surface. This layer is beneficial for flower seeds because it can the improve the germination environment and prevent soil crusting.

Planting:

Starting Indoors: For earlier blooms, you may optionally start planting indoors in containers 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date in Spring, keeping seedlings at least 65F. Harden off then transplant seedlings outdoors in a sunny location when temperatures are consistently above 65F. To transplant seedlings, prepare a transplant hole outdoors in a sunny location. Remove the plants carefully from the pots or flats and set them in the transplant holes, burying some of the stem in the ground. Pack the soil loosely around the plant and leave a slightly sunken area around each plant to hold water. Water the plants after transplanting.

Directly Sowing: If directly sowing outdoors, plant after all danger of frost has passed in spring and soil temperatures reach at least 65F. If fall planting in cold climates, sow in containers at least 8-10 weeks before the first expected frost, but bring indoors before the first frost and keep in a bright location.

To plant, make holes 1/4 inch deep and spaced 18-24 inches apart down the rows of raised beds. Plant 5 seeds per hole, then cover thinly with soil. In small plots, flower seeds may be scattered and gently watered in. Once seedlings emerge, plants can separated and spaced 18-24 inches apart to allow room for mature plants to spread and prevent overcrowding. Water after planting.

Planting Depth: 1/4 inch
Within-Row Spacing: 18 - 24 inches
Between-Row Spacing: 2-3 feet

Care During the Season:

Chinese Lantern Plants can be maintained by pruning and water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist. As they grow through summer, support may be needed to keep the tall stems upright. Remove weeds to reduce competition and apply a layer of mulch to retain soil moisture. In late summer or early fall, the plant produces its iconic orange lantern-shaped husks. Cut back the stems in late fall after the foliage dies back, leaving a few inches above ground to prepare for winter. These hardy perennials tolerate USDA zones 3 to 9 and can handle cold winters, though adding a layer of mulch in colder regions provides extra root protection. Plants are not edible.

incredible wide format printer
Style: WF-7820, Set: SINGLE TRAY (250 sheets/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN, Style: WF-7820, Set: SINGLE TRAY (250 sheets/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
I had a WF 4530 that I bought over 10 years ago - that printer was a tank and the ability to scan was HUGE. That printer recently died on me - over a decade with inkjet - with no issues despite long stretches of no use - I can't complain one bit. I bought the 7820 WF - it's an upgrade in every aspect. Quiet. Fast. Great print quality. Edge to edge printing. Wide format (if/when I need it). I've added a photo to the review of a printout I did using HP photo paper (4x6) to give you an idea of the quality - for home printed inkjet it's (IMO) top of the scale. One note: Don't use windows 10 or windows 11 drivers - download and install the drivers from Epson - they give you scan to pdf, scan to your computer, and the printout resolution from the windows drivers is horrible - the epson drivers are really needed.

WAS a good printer
Style: WF-7820, Set: SINGLE TRAY (250 sheets/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN, Style: WF-7820, Set: SINGLE TRAY (250 sheets/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
I was excited to purchase a printer that could print LARGE prints for my small business. After 2 months of using this printer, I had to find a company that sold just the replacement chips. My cartridges would be halfway full of ink but printer would throw a code saying ink was out. Now after using this printer for less than 6 months, it will not read any new chips (on brand new cartridges even). When I purchased it on July 16th for under $200, I thought it was a great deal. Now I know they were trying to get rid of their junk printers!!

Large-format printer, fairly reliable and quick but so-so on ink usage
Style: WF-7820, Set: SINGLE TRAY (250 sheets/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
Large-format scanner/printer. Accepts paper from the front (main) cassette OR through a back paper tray if you need to print something on different paper. Individual cartridges for ink. Not particularly economical on ink (and the ink of course is expensive) but the cartridges are individual (one each red, yellow, blue and black) and after a couple years of use, I've NEVER had to clean the print heads - printing is always clean and clear. Has had some issues connecting to wifi so have found the cable connection to the computer is best/more reliable. It's hard to find an absolutely perfect printer but this one comes close. I use it mostly for large scanning/printing as it goes up to 11 x 17 inches. One drawback to note is that after only a short time, the document feeder pulls the documents through crookedly, so scans/prints from the document feeder do NOT come out straight (for both single and double-sided scans.) This model is a few years old so there may be more recent Epson models on the market as of 2026.

All printer suck this one sucks less. :). Love it.
Style: WF-7820, Set: SINGLE TRAY (250 sheets/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
If you ever saw office space the movie there is a scene where he get mad at his printer and we all relate because printers have a lot of moving parts that can go bad. I have not got or set up a printer for many years. So it was a tad hard but honestly not really. It takes time because it does so much. And I wanted to rush but they truly did everything they could to baby sit us. Google the printer type with the word download. That is what I did and you come to a page you find and down load set up software. I set it up with usb. But also wireless. A tad tricky but only because I was not following directions. It takes some time to find all the packing tape and that’s fine. It’s bigger than most printers. So when I was looking for printers they were 400 or 1-2 thousand. And then this one less than two hundred. In business two hundred is like disposable. At home it’s a nice dinner. So I am impressed for the money what ya get. Personally. The screen is huge. And clear. And you can read it from many angles. It’s animated. Touch. It’s flexible you can tilt it. Better than the old brother with with a thumbnail. I also set it up on my phone. It was not hat hard and printed a photo and it printed color edge to edge and it’s on standard paper. Look nice. And like a photo in a magazine. Can’t wait to print something 13 by 19. We own a venue restaurant and do shows can’t wait to make show posters. I’m going to buy one for home but want to see what printing cost is.

Epson quality has sunk into the nameless abyss
Style: WF-7820, Set: SINGLE TRAY (250 sheets/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
Really shocked that this is how bad Epson products have gotten. This MFC isn't even comparable to models that came out 20 years ago. First off the scanner is extremely poor quality. My Brother MFC from 2009 can pick up light blues and reds and brightness of the paper better then this Epson can. Which is just sad. Very poor color gambit for the scanner, it would be better to take photos with your phone and send them to the printer then use the scanner. I scan in watercolors and ink paintings/sketches and had to pull out my decade old scanner rather then use this one. Then there is the quality of the prints, which is mediocre at best. Colors don't reproduce well and you can't adjust the profile enough to get it to print correctly. Then there is the insane amount of ink this thing uses. The amount of pages you can print per cartridge is a complete lie, think half if not a 3rd of the page count unless you are only printing on a 5.5x4 sheets of paper. Cartridges are overpriced and they can not be refilled, Epson installed a one use only chip in each of their cartridges and even if it had only used half the ink in the cartridge it won't print with it anymore. They also force updates that will deactivate any cartridge you haven't replaced in a while even if it is a genuine Epson cartridge. This printer's only purpose is to be a money pit for ink cartridges you don't actually need. Never buy Epson, they have become a dishonest unethical company with a shotty product line. *update, Epson gets worst. Firmware got updated by accident. Apparently now no cartridges work with printer, even bought from Epson. Everyone is unrecognizable by the printer. Epson has gone overboard on making their printers n compatible with remanufactured cartridges that they decided to make even their own cartridges no longer work. Turning the printer into a 50lb paper weight. NEVER BUY AN EPSON PRODUCT!!!!
