The Quirky Tubular Jade Plant That's Winning Hearts Across Australian Gardens

G'day plant lovers! Looking for something truly special to add to your plant collection? Meet Crassula Shrek's Ears – the cheeky shrek ears plant that's become one of Australia's most sought-after succulents. With its distinctive tubular, trumpet-shaped leaves that curl just like the famous ogre's ears, this unique variety of jade plant brings playful personality and sculptural beauty to any space.

What Makes Shrek's Ears So Special?

The Crassula Shrek's Ears is a rare cultivar of Crassula ovata that's captured the imagination of Australian succulent enthusiasts from Brisbane to Perth. Unlike traditional jade plant varieties with flat, rounded leaves, Shrek's Ears produces extraordinary tubular foliage that rolls inward, creating finger-like projections in vibrant green with stunning red-tipped edges when grown in bright light.

This unique shaped is closely related to Gollum Jade and is sometimes called Ogre Ears, but Shrek's Ears has distinctly more curled, trumpet-like leaves that grow in tight, compact clusters. The playful appearance makes it an instant conversation starter and a must-have for collectors seeking something beyond ordinary succulents.

Key Features:

  • Distinctive Foliage: Tubular, curled leaves with vibrant red accents.
  • Compact & Versatile: Perfect for containers, bonsai-style displays, or fairy gardens.
  • Easy-Care Succulent: Drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and ideal for beginners.
  • Seasonal Blooms: Produces clusters of delicate white to pale pink flowers in winter.
  • Indoor & Outdoor Appeal: Thrives in bright windowsills or warm outdoor gardens.

Perfect for Australian Growing Conditions

The Crassula Shrek's Ears thrives beautifully across most Australian climate zones:

  • Queensland & Northern NSW: Loves the warm, dry conditions. Place in morning sun with afternoon shade during peak summer heat. Water sparingly – once every 10-14 days during active growth.
  • Sydney & Coastal Areas: Thrives in bright light with good air circulation. Perfect for balcony gardens and outdoor entertaining areas. Watch for increased humidity during summer; ensure free draining soil to prevent root issues.
  • Melbourne & Southern Regions: Excellent indoor plant for bright windowsills. Can move outdoor in summer but bring inside before first frost. The cooler autumn temperatures produce spectacular red color.
  • Adelaide & Perth: Ideal conditions! Hot, dry summers suit this drought tolerant beauty perfectly. Provide some afternoon shade during 40°C+ days. Winter growing season produces best results.
  • Tasmania & ACT: Best grown indoor near sunny windows or in protected outdoor spots during warmer months. Definitely frost-sensitive – move inside by April.

Care Guide:

  • Light: Full sun to bright indirect light for best color.
  • Water: Let soil dry completely between waterings.
  • Soil: Use a free-draining cactus/succulent mix.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm, dry conditions; protect from frost.
  • Propagation: Simple to grow from cuttings or leaf segments.

Styling Ideas for Your Shrek's Ears

This versatile plant works beautifully in multiple applications:

  • Bonsai Styling: The compact growth habit and woody stem development make Shrek's Ears perfect for bonsai-style container displays. Train into traditional shapes or let it develop naturally into a sculptural living artwork.
  • Fairy Gardens: The quirky, whimsical foliage adds playful character to miniature garden scenes. Mix with other small plant for magical landscapes.
  • Container Gardens: Pairs beautifully with other drought tolerant succulents like Echeveria, Sedum, and cactus varieties. The tubular leaves provide textural contrast in mixed arrangements.
  • Indoor Feature Plant: Display as a solo specimen in a decorative pot on desks, shelves, or windowsills. The unique shaped leaves draw the eye and spark conversation.
  • Outdoor Rock Gardens: Tuck into rock garden crevices or use as edging along paths. Combines beautifully with Australian native plants that tolerate similar conditions.

If you like ash in your face and then wash it off: this is your product
Color: Dark
This is EXTREMELY dark, yet it looks like Ash in the face. Besides, if you don't wash your hands INMEDIATLEY the COLOR will stick to it for the rest of the day, regardless how often you wash them then. If you then, wash the hand as - never advised by the product description - QUICKLY, you risk to get streaks in your face. Although, passing the pain of filthy looking hands and sleeping overnight with the product, THEN wash your face you have a slight tan. Just like going shopping, and getting a regular product with a GRATIS slap in the face. Congrats! Much prefer L'Oreal Paris Sublime Bronze Luminous Bronzer, cheaper and efficient. Downside (or upside, depends on taste) your skin (may use on the whole body) stays sparkly for one day. The tan, though lasts quite a bit. Nivea Sunkissed Beautiful Legs (you may apply on all the body, your arms will not complain being slightly tanned) gives you a slight tan, smells ok, yet if you wish to keep the already slight tan, one must apply it again and again each day.

Good color but not worth the effort..
I was disappointed. I've used all kinds of self tanners and this one was the most difficult of any. I know the proper way to apply them.. This didn't blend evenly no matter the effort. I was left with major streaks. Had to throw it out. HOWEVER, I did like the color it developed.. I wish it'd been different..

Finally, a Volufiline Product That Isn’t Just a Tiny Sprinkle in the Formula
I bought this because I have been trying to find a Volufiline product that actually makes sense. There has been so much hype around Volufiline lately, but a lot of products only include a tiny amount and then market it like it is the main feature. That is why this one caught my attention. The Ordinary is clearly stating 92% Volufiline with 1% Palmitoyl Isoleucine, so this feels much more direct and less gimmicky than many of the products I have tried. As someone with 52-year-old post-menopausal dry mature skin, I am realistic about what a product like this can and cannot do. This is not going to reverse time, rebuild your face, lift sagging skin, or create permanent volume. That is not how topical skincare works. But if you are looking for a targeted product that can give a temporary plumper, smoother-looking effect in certain areas, this is one of the better Volufiline options I have used. The texture feels more like a lightweight oil-serum than a watery serum. Because of that, I personally prefer using it over moisturizer or mixing a small amount into a cream before applying it to the areas where I want that softer, fuller look. I would not just smear this all over my face like a normal serum. It works best as a targeted product. Ingredient-wise, the formula is intentionally simple. Volufiline itself is based on Anemarrhena asphodeloides root extract in an oil-soluble base, and this also includes Palmitoyl Isoleucine, which fits the plumping/skin-conditioning concept. The fact that this is not padded with a long list of filler ingredients is part of why I like it. It feels focused. I also like that it is fragrance-free. That matters to me because products used around expression lines, cheeks, and delicate areas can become irritating quickly if they are loaded with fragrance. I did not find this irritating, but the box does mention that a slight tingling can happen, so patch testing makes sense. In terms of results, I noticed more of a temporary cosmetic smoothing and plumping effect than a dramatic transformation. That is exactly what I expected. It makes certain areas look a little softer and less dry-looking, especially when used with a good moisturizer. For mature skin, that can make a real visual difference, even if it is not structural or permanent. Who may like this? Someone who has been curious about Volufiline but wants a more concentrated, straightforward formula instead of a cream that barely contains any. Also someone who understands that this is about temporary cosmetic plumping and skin softness, not actual facial reshaping. Who may not like it? If you dislike oil-based textures, want instant dramatic volume, or expect filler-like results, this will probably disappoint you. Overall, I really like this. It is one of the few Volufiline products I have tried that feels honest about what it is, and the higher concentration makes it more appealing than many of the overhyped options out there.

Promising Skincare Product with Clean Ingredients
I have always loved this brand and have purchased many of their skincare products in the past, so I was excited to try their Volufiline after seeing how popular it has become on TikTok. A lot of people online claim it helps plump the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without needing injections, which definitely caught my attention. For the price, I think it is a pretty reasonable product if it actually delivers results. From what I understand, this is not a product that gives instant results and it can take at least three months or longer of consistent use before you really notice a difference. Because of that, I cannot honestly say yet whether it works or not, but I plan to continue using it and will update my review over time if I start seeing visible changes. I also purchased a separate roller ball attachment for the bottle because it makes application much easier and more precise. Without the roller attachment, you would mostly be applying the product with your fingers, which can apparently cause your fingers themselves to become plumper from repeated contact. As always, one of the things I appreciate most about this brand is the transparency and focus on clean ingredients. Their products always feel thoughtfully formulated, and I like knowing exactly what I am putting on my skin. Overall, I am hopeful about this product and excited to see the long-term results.
