Scientific Name
Crassula rubricaulis (thick, red cabbagey-leaved plant) 'Candy Cane'

Common Name
Candy Cane Crassula, Red-Stemmed Crassula, Jade Necklace, Jade Necklace Vine, Chinese Pagoda

Origin
Native to South Africa

Description
This little succulent can form a shrub up to a metre wide in the wild! In your home it probably won't get quite so big but with some care it can thrive indoors too. Its pale green fleshy leaves are lined with red, hence the variety name 'Candy Cane', and it will bring a splash of colour and vibrancy to your home! As a succulent, this crassula will thrive with not too much water and plenty of light. Pick a nice bright spot for it and your plant will reward your care by displaying its uniform, colourful foliage.

Light
Bright light is important for Crassula, so pick a spot where it can get a few hours of morning or evening sun. Its colours will start to fade if there is not enough light, so keep an eye on its stripes!

Water
Let all of the soil dry out between waters; remember, in its natural habitat this plant is used to droughts between infrequent downpours. Cold water can shock the plant, so make sure your water is room-temperature at least before watering.

Humidity
Crassulae are used to low humidity, so don't keep it anywhere damp. An occasional hose down will keep the leaves free of dust, but make sure it dries out completely afterwards.

Soil
Use a well-draining soil mix with components such as sand and grit; a mix designed for cacti and succulents will work well here. Repot every 2-3 years in the spring.

Food
Feed every two months in the growing season, reduce to every three in autumn and winter.

Temperature
Ideal temperature is 15-26°C; make sure it does not get colder than 12°C in winter.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Keep an eye on the colour of the leaves to check on some of the most common issues with Crassula. If the leaves start to go red (aside from their natural variegation), this is a sign of sunburn and they should be gradually moved to a location with less direct sun. If the leaves are going yellow, however, the plant is probably too damp, and will benefit from brighter light and less frequent watering.

Better than the Chronicles
Format: Paperback
I hope DC keeps on publishing these omnibus series up to the silver age and also the softcover option. I much prefer these new softcover editions over the older chronicles series for several reasons. These STGA softcovers are very big almost twice the stories compared to the chronicles and at a very affordable price. Actually a very good price. Also the paper is one hundred times better, I hated the chronicles' paper. Amazon is wonderful too, they now deliver my comics to my house in Costa Rica in less than a couple of weeks, they always arrive before the scheduled time. Excellent service. The only thing to complain is the reproduction. I consider that Marvel makes better efforts than DC to restore their GA stuff. The Cory Sedlemeier books like the Marvel Comics Golden Age omnibus look like they were drawn this morning. DC is usually quite cheaper and prefers not invest in that. So we get the same results as the old early 2000s Archives. I know today it is impossible to get original art pages of action comics 1-10 But I still think that compared to Marvel DC is very lazy and a skintflint when it comes to restoring their old books.

Got it for my college class, it was a required text.
Format: Paperback
Got this book for one my college class, no joke this was a required text. But overall it was an okay read, only reason why I gave it a 4 out 5 is because I prefer to read books for enjoyment and interest, reading a book for class takes that away.

Superman, a Dark Knight in the Skies
Format: Paperback
This is a beautiful tome of the first issues of Superman under Action Comics and the first Superman issue. Although providing the same texts of Chronicles, I find this series better because they have more issues per volume. In spite of its 390 pages, these volumes are light and easy to handle. Albeit the simplicity and innocence of these stories, Superman impresses me as a "dark knight" of the skies given his toughness with the bad guys. In these stories, he's got no compassion for criminals. He also defends the working class, stand for fair treatment of workers, and even takes an "isolationist" stance which was popular in the days before WWII. Another surprise for the first-time reader of this period is that Superman can't fly; he can only leap over tall buildings. There is no Krypton and no Daily Planet. The city of Metropolis is introduced for the first time in the second half of this tome. And Lois Lane is often relegated to unimportant journalistic tasks, while she has greater ambitions. It is a great experience to read these old stories in a beautifully designed tome. I hope they reproduce the others quickly.
