Welcome to the world of Cactus! The stunning Fishhook cactus, also known as Mammillaria Carretii, is a member of Mammillaria saffordii! This globular beauty is a sight to behold with its dense supination and reddish hooked central spines that resemble fishhooks. It's like having a tiny fishing rod in your indoor garden!

When it comes to blooming, this cactus doesn't shy away from showing off its explosive white-yellow with light peach tube blooms that are simply breathtaking. This little guy can grow up to 24 inches tall and 11 inches wide but prefers soil with good drainage and some shade.

You won't need any fancy gardening skills for taking care of this cutie as it thrives in various conditions making it perfect for any collection or even gifting purposes!

Watering Needs

For fishhook cacti and for most other cacti don't water until the top 2 inches of soil is completely dry. Cacti are like camels and can go a long time without water. One of the main signs of lack of water is a pale discoloration and the stem starts to shrink and shrivel as the cactus starts to consume the water in its interior.

In most environments, your cactus is fine going for 2 weeks or more without water. When you water, make sure there is a drain hole and water your cactus thoroughly so it can drink up as much water as it needs. Like a camel, it drinks a lot rather quickly and then does not need water for a long time.

Light Requirements

The fishhook cactus requires a lot of light and should be grown in either full sun or partial shade. New plants can get burned in the full sun as they were probably grown in a greenhouse; therefore, gradually increase their exposure to sunlight.

If the sun is too bright and is burning your plant's leaves, consider purchasing a sunshade or moving the plant to a more shaded location.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Mammillaria species prefer very light, sandy soil that drains well. Planting them in regular soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and, most likely, root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized potting mix that contains organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your cactus to thrive.

Organic fertilizers also last longer and keep your soil alive by adding other beneficial compounds and microbes that encourage plant health and nutrient absorption. So, skip those harsh chemicals and give your fishhook cactus some love with some awesome organic fertilizer once a year in the spring!

Hardiness Zones & More

The fishhook cactus thrives best at 65 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. If you plant it outdoors, it grows best in USDA zones 10 and 11 in cooler zones. If you live in a colder climate, you should put them in a pot and they can then be kept outdoors during the summer and brought in as the temperature drops.

Give this Fishhook cactus - Mammillaria carretii a try if you're looking for an easy plant to care for!

Great but my dogs tear up the handle
Size: Medium
My dogs love this toy. It squeaks and is fun for fetch. The only downfall is my dogs are able to chew pieces of the rubber off the handle and try to eat it.

Great toy!
Size: Large
This is the best Torrey I’ve ever bought for my dogs! I bought two of them and they both love them! One is more of an aggressive chewer so this is perfect. It’s very durable. They both love that that rolls it has a handle, it has a ball inside and it squeaks so it keeps their attention for a long time and it’s extremely durable best toy ever.

Get the ball!
Size: Large
I have 2 cattle dogs. One blue heeler and one blue heeler/aussie mix that is blind and completely ball crazy. We have gone through a hundred balls over the years and this is by far the best. It can be kicked (with think boots not running shoes), thrown, or rolled by the dog if you have one of those types. One of my dogs is a chewer and he hasn't put a dent in it, in months. The ball bounces when kicked/thrown and makes that odd noise when its hit just right so its extra entertaining for the dogs but also let's our blind dog know where its at. Can't say enough good things about this ball, worth trying for sure! It's also easy to drop in the creek, sink or tub to rinse off.

Noise + Durability Issues
Size: Medium
Was really hopeful for this toy. Our boy loves playing outside with balls, but likes to run and play tug with them. We wanted to find a ball to play tug with and saw the handles on these, plus it was made by Kong and many reviews said it withstood their super chewers. The material didn’t stand a chance against my dog. Already took chunks of it out in the first 20 min. The other thing was the noise level of the squeaker. It’s unbearably loud. To the point I had to stop giving it to my dog because he squeaked it so much I felt it was disturbing the neighbors. So overall, wouldn’t recommend unless you have a lot of land, plan on using it indoors, and don’t have a super chewer dog.

Great Value Toy
Color: Crinkle Duck (Blue), Size: Large, Color: Crinkle Duck (Blue), Size: Large
This toy has been one of my dog’s absolute favorites. He gets excited every time he sees it and will carry it around the house, toss it in the air, and keep himself entertained for a long time. The shape and texture seem perfect for him, and it quickly became one of his go-to toys over everything else in his basket. What I really like is that it holds up reasonably well for the price. It’s definitely not indestructible, and after a lot of play, it will sometimes start to rip—usually around the feet first since that’s where my dog tends to grab and chew the most. But honestly, considering how affordable it is, I don’t mind replacing it when needed. It’s inexpensive enough that rebuying feels worth it because he genuinely loves it that much. I’d rather keep buying a toy he is obsessed with than spend more on something that just sits untouched. It’s fun, cute, and keeps him happy, which is what matters most. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it for dogs who love plush toys and playful chewing.
