Biodiversity-Led Planting Tips

Plant Lily of the Valley in moist but well-drained soil in full shade or partial shade. It performs particularly well beneath deciduous trees, where spring light reaches the ground before leaf cover develops.

Soak the pips (rhizomes) in lukewarm water for around 30 minutes before planting to help rehydrate roots and encourage strong establishment. Plant with the growing tip just at or slightly below the soil surface. Enrich soil with leaf mould or compost to mimic natural woodland conditions.

Mulch annually in autumn with leaf mould and divide congested clumps every few years to maintain vigour. In smaller gardens, containers can be used to enjoy its flowers while keeping spread in check.
