Anthurium Besseae × Pinkleyi 'Jungle Dreams'

A named collector hybrid pairing two species with very different but highly complementary leaf characters — Anthurium besseae aff., the compact Peruvian velvet species celebrated above nearly all others in the hybrid anthurium world for the near-fluorescent brilliance of its yellow-green venation blazing against deep velvety leaf surface, a venation intensity it passes with remarkable consistency into its offspring; and Anthurium pinkleyi, a rare epiphytic species from the tropical forests of Central and South America known for its large, broadly heart-shaped, glossy leaves with prominent parallel venation and a substantial, architectural presence that brings scale and surface complexity to crosses. The 'Jungle Dreams' hybrid integrates these two parent contributions into a large-leaved, glossy to semi-glossy-surfaced plant where the pinkleyi parent contributes overall leaf scale, heart-shaped form, and the pronounced bullate quilting and parallel ridging that creates a three-dimensional surface texture across each leaf — while the besseae parent's venation influence modulates the vein expression toward greater contrast and visual energy than pure pinkleyi alone would produce. The combination of pinkleyi's architectural scale and bullate texture with besseae's venation contribution makes 'Jungle Dreams' a hybrid that rewards the grower with a leaf that is simultaneously substantial in size, complex in surface texture, and visually active in its vein definition. New growth typically emerges in warm bronze to coppery tones before maturing to the rich deep green of the adult leaf. Individual seedling expression varies as with all open hybrid crosses.

Provide bright indirect light to support the fullest venation expression and most vigorous leaf development — the besseae lineage in particular benefits from good light to maintain venation color intensity. Keep the medium consistently but lightly moist in a chunky, open epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir; never allow waterlogging or persistently saturated conditions. High humidity of 60-80% is essential for maintaining the glossy leaf surface and supporting clean, healthy leaf emergence. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-80°F with stable rather than fluctuating conditions. Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer supplemented with calcium and magnesium every 4-6 weeks during active growth. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

A Unique and Incredible Tale
Format: Kindle
This book brilliantly shows what it feels like for me to go through the world neurodivergently. The characters truly resonate. The artistry of the layout and imagery is compelling and once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. What an authentic glimpse into an intense inner world!

Building something wonderful out of the broken pieces
Format: Hardcover
Meg Eden Kuyatt has done it again. I am a big fan of novel in verse, and this author is one reason why. The poetry delivers character, setting, and story in a clear, believable voice. The protagonist, V, is a middle school girl full of feelings, celebrating her difference while fighting for her place in the wonderland of neurotypicals. V introduces herself in vibrant socks that say “I am strange and wonderful.” And with that, we are off. V is reluctantly spending the summer with her grandma Jojo in the pristine white house that has been in her family for generations. History is definitely living here. The house is a character itself (and a metaphor). I love that V’s cousin Cat creates assemblages, an art form I was not familiar with. Cat describes it as taking discarded, broken stuff and turning it into something beautiful (another metaphor). There is a lot going on here and a satisfying resolution brought on by a heaping dose of empathy. Highly recommend for the suggested audience (juvenile fiction, grades 3-7), their teachers, and families with neurodivergence.

Emotionally messy relationships with unreliable narrators
Format: Hardcover
Meg Eden Kuyatt guides us through a beautifully lyrical journey into the life of V, an autistic girl forced to spend the summer with her overbearing grandmother. The story is often more metaphorical than literal, which works well thematically since it revolves around emotionally messy relationships with unreliable narrators, making the details of both the past and present difficult to pin down. Overall, a great read that will be appreciated by both kids and adults looking for mature, nuanced stories about dysfunctional families and the autistic experience.
