Aloe 'Erik the Red', a sensational large hybrid by Leo Thamm of Sunbird Aloes, features blood-red winter flowers atop long, dark green leaves with prominent whitish-green teeth. Reaching up to 2 meters in height and 1 meter in width, its main stem often produces new shoots, creating a full shrubby appearance. The tall inflorescences of red flowers, emerging in early winter, continue through early spring, complemented by yellow stamens. A complex hybrid involving Aloe mawii, A. petricola, A. marlothii, and A. arborescens, it's named after Thamm's son and thrives in full sun with occasional watering. Moderately frost-tolerant, it's a striking focal point in gardens, rockeries, and containers, adding a tropical desert ambiance.
