Platycerium Bifurcatum

The most widely cultivated member of a genus that is itself unlike almost anything else in the fern world — Platycerium bifurcatum, the Common Staghorn Fern, is an epiphytic fern native to coastal and subtropical rainforests of eastern Australia, New Guinea, and Java, where it grows anchored to tree trunks and branches in a way that makes its relationship with conventional potting culture immediately and fundamentally incompatible. The plant produces two entirely distinct and morphologically different frond types that serve completely different functions: the shield or nest fronds, which are sterile, rounded, flat, overlapping fronds that press tightly against the mounting surface, anchoring the plant, protecting the root mass, and accumulating the falling leaf litter and organic debris that the plant depends on for nutrition in its treeside habitat; and the fertile or antler fronds, which are the dramatic, arching, deeply bifurcating fronds that give the species both its common and scientific names, growing outward from the shield fronds in silvery-green, strap-like blades that fork repeatedly in a branching, deer-antler silhouette — the undersides of mature fertile fronds covered in the brown, felt-like spore patches called sporangia that distinguish mature, healthy specimens. The silvery-grey surface quality of the fronds comes from a dense covering of star-shaped trichomes that are both functional — reducing water loss and reflecting harsh light — and extremely beautiful in the way they catch and diffuse light across the frond surface. Of all the staghorns, bifurcatum is by far the most tolerant of varied conditions, making it the ideal entry point into a genuinely addictive genus of collector ferns.

Platycerium bifurcatum is best grown mounted on a board, cork slab, or tree fern fiber panel rather than potted — the mounting surface should have a bed of sphagnum moss behind the root mass, and the plant attached with fishing line or twine until the shield fronds anchor it naturally. Provide bright indirect light to filtered direct sun; it is the most sun-tolerant staghorn in the genus and handles more light than most. Water by soaking the mount thoroughly — submerging the entire mount in water for 15-20 minutes — then allowing it to dry almost completely before the next watering; never mist the fronds regularly as this encourages rot. Never remove the brown shield fronds, which are a normal and essential part of the plant's structure. Humidity of 50-70% suits it well, and it tolerates lower humidity than most other Platycerium species. Feed by tucking banana peels, compost, or slow-release fertilizer behind the shield fronds, or by adding diluted liquid fertilizer to the soaking water monthly. Non-toxic to humans and pets.

Multiple ferns per 8" basket, frond length will vary between plants and not all plants will be the same size. Fronds average 6-12".

Simple, easy to read, dependable, and affordable: all the important stuff!
Color: Black/White/Black
Its just a fine time piece for daily wear. Its light, its super easy to read both day and night. Its comfortable and it looks good on your arm. What more can you ask of a watch? If you want "fancy" go buy some high dollar metal case thing and pay three or four (or more) times what this watch cost. If you want to know what time it is and not spend a bunch of money, this is your baby. You can find cheaper watches, but you will not find a better watch at this price. I know, I have been wearing out watches for decades! My work is hard on watches. Things like using power tools, impact tools, hammers, welders, etc. These watches have never failed me and have lasted longer than watches costing far more. I got my first Timex watch nearly sixty years ago. I am still buying them as I have found nothing else that is more accurate or holds up under harsh conditions any better. You get what you pay for except with Timex. They give you MORE than you paid for.

I like the nylon strap.
Color: Black/White/Black
Watch itself is fine - doesn't stand out as something spectacular but is great for what it is. Definitely waterproof to about 30 feet deep - I've tested it snorkeling. The best thing is the strap - this nylon strap is much more comfortable than usual watch straps. There are a lot of nylon straps out there -- I think I prefer this one more than most of the others. the Velcro allows infinite adjustment, unlike straps with holes like a belt. And the way they did the looping of the band around itself seems to work really well. Better than another velcro strap I had many years ago ("the band") which was similar but didn't loop around itself the same way. This one is better - quicker and easier to put on and more easily adjustable.

Great purchase
Color: Black/White/Black, Color: Black/White/Black
The perfect watch for my eyes. White background with black hour and the second hand. Standard stuff… It’s all about the simple things that matter to me. The indigo green light might not appeal to everyone (look at the price). The band is fabric with Velcro to adjust. I’ve work this watch day and night. A near perfect fit. Easy to adjust and it’s comfortable for me, the look is just right for me. A no brainer to set up immediately. Time (?) will tell about minute creep or over all durability, A nice affordable watch that I I’ll wear everyday under all conditions. If I loose it I’ll buy another one.

Inexpensive Box Checker That Works Great!
Color: Black/White/Black
Although I have a few watches I was looking for something that was more camping specific. Something that was EASILY legible to my 56 year old vision - both in daytime and night. I needed it to have some waterproofness ability as I would also using it for kayaking. I had a Timex Expedition watch with a black dial that I gave to my son as I wanted one with a white face which I find easier to read. I gave this watch some serious consideration after seeing so many YTbers give Timex field watches the thumbs up. I came upon this model and then when I saw one available under $30 it became a no-brainer! I used it recently for its intended purpose - a 3 day camping weekend. So here are my observations. The strap is probably the only negative to the watch for me as I have big hands and need to undo it completely to feed the strap through the buckle. A minor hindrance. Once its on it's light and comfortable. I may eventually change out the strap...or I may not. The watch is easily legible and nothing, I MEAN NOTHING, beats Timex's "Indiglo" feature for nighttime. Forget "watch lume" as nothing is a visibly legible at nights as "Indiglo". I have a Casio watch that has a light feature but that cannot hold a candle to this watch's nighttime ability. On a kayak trip, I overturned the kayak and the watch was in the water so it held up nicely for that. The watch is rated for 100M so that was nothing for it I know. It's hard to find a watch that does so much at this price point. I would definitely recommend it for someone looking for the features that it has in an inexpensive package.

Decent watch, bad warranty.
Color: Black/White/Black
Decent watch, good design, solid strap. Bad warranty. I spent a little bit more money to get a better quality product with a name brand warranty, and I feel like it was a waste of money. The backlight stopped working within 6 months. I replaced the battery, but it didn't help. I started the process of a warranty repair with Timex, but then found out they have a $8 fee for in-warranty repair. With the cost of the watch being what it is, I'll just deal with the broken backlight. Next time I'll spend less money on cheap disposable non-brand name watches
