Peperomia obtusifolia

Peperomia obtusifolia is a compact evergreen Peperomia with thick, glossy, blunt-tipped leaves on fleshy branching stems. It is often called baby rubber plant because of its firm leaf texture, although it stays smaller and softer in shape than that common name suggests.

The leaves are broad, slightly cupped and polished, giving the plant a full green appearance even in a modest pot. New stems usually rise upright at first, then branch gradually, creating a rounded plant that remains easy to manage indoors.

Quick plant features:

  • Leaf shape: Broad, blunt-tipped leaves with a smooth glossy surface.
  • Stem habit: Fleshy stems branch slowly and build a rounded, bushy plant.
  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate indoors, with steady growth in warm filtered light.
  • Flowering: Mature plants may produce narrow greenish-white flower spikes.
  • Pet safety: ASPCA lists Peperomia obtusifolia as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Species background and container growth:

Peperomia obtusifolia is an accepted Piperaceae species native from Florida to Tropical America. It can grow as a perennial or epiphyte in wet tropical habitats, where warmth, filtered light and airflow around the roots are part of its natural growing conditions.

In a pot, the thick leaves can store a little moisture, but the roots remain fine and relatively shallow. This is why the plant responds well to a modest pot, an airy mix and watering that allows the upper substrate to dry before the next soak.

The flower spikes are normal but understated. The plant is grown for its glossy leaf surface, rounded leaf shape and slow branching habit.

Care that suits the thick leaves and fine roots:

  • Light: Give bright indirect light or soft morning/evening sun. Strong summer midday sun can scorch the glossy leaves.
  • Watering: Water when the top few centimetres feel dry. The leaves tolerate a short dry interval better than a constantly wet pot.
  • Substrate: Use a loose houseplant mix with perlite, pumice or fine bark so the roots receive moisture and oxygen.
  • Temperature: Keep it around 18–26 °C. Cold windowsills are risky when the substrate is damp.
  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is usually fine. A humidifier or plant grouping can support smoother new leaves in dry heated air.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted balanced fertiliser about once a month.
  • Repotting: Move up only one small pot size when roots have clearly filled the current pot.
  • Pruning: Cut long stems above a node to encourage branching. Healthy stem cuttings root well in warm, airy conditions.

Problems that show up first:

  • Yellow lower leaves: Check for overwatering, old compacted substrate or a pot that stays wet for too long.
  • Soft black stem bases: Remove affected stems and inspect the roots; this usually follows cold, wet conditions.
  • Wrinkled leaves: Check both drought and root health. Damaged roots can leave the plant thirsty even in damp substrate.
  • Stretched stems: Move the plant into brighter filtered light and trim leggy stems to encourage denser regrowth.
  • Brown patches: Check for sun scorch, cold damage or water collecting between dense leaves.

Pet and child safety:

Peperomia obtusifolia is listed by ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is still best treated as an ornamental plant, because chewing can damage the leaves and may still cause mild stomach upset from plant material.

Botanical name background:

Peperomia means pepper-like and reflects the genus’ relationship with Piperaceae. The species epithet obtusifolia means blunt-leaved, a direct reference to the rounded leaf tips. The current accepted combination was published in 1831.

Peperomia obtusifolia grows as a small glossy foliage plant with firm green leaves and a steady branching habit.

Practical, Useful, Down to Earth, Inspiring!
Format: Paperback
I love this book. After reading the first chapter early one morning I went outside to feed and water my cats and came in and wrote a poem about flowing water, tangled morning glories and memories of my mother. It's one of the most inspiring, practical and encouraging books about writing poetry that I've ever read, and trust me, I've read them all. It has technical information and poems to illustrate each chapter, which is very helpful. The suggestions at the end of each chapter are down to earth and do-able, unlike some books that are just too high-minded for the average person. If you love to write poems and just need some inspiration and a little advice and encouragement, then definitely buy this book. It's worth its weight in gold!

Took me by surprise 😮
Format: Paperback
The revised part of my review: I do agree with a reviewer; Thomas "Should Have Been Better" Especially his paragraph here: [Unless (like the authors) you think that Sharon Olds' "passing blood and feces and water" and her "stool black with iron pills" (page 234) are high points in the world of modern poetry, you may resist their suggestion to "read all five of her books, for pleasure first, of course, but secondly to examine how she goes about her difficult task" (page 47).] As I have read more, I am reevaluating my own opinions of this book. I still feel it has been helpful, although much of it I would have preferred to have never read! Poor choice of examples to a student indeed! This, is my original review: I thought it was going to be a bunch of lame assignments, well there definitely are some assignments so to speak. I haven't even made it through half of the 1st chapter and I've written 6 or 7 new reflections (which some call poetry)! It digs deep, at least it did for me...pretty personal when you open yourself up to it. Good challenge and good lessons to glean from and grow as a writer. I still plan on keeping this around, probably with a few pages removed.

A first Poetry book...
Format: Paperback
Update (7/22/20): I must elaborate more on my intention for this book, for had my previous brief update felt vague. By practicing writing, I meant understanding and placing down the basic conventions of poetry because I am critical when it comes to writing. As I explore through the pages in this book, involving just the underlining, the structure of each topic in this book makes for ease of learning. Near the end of each topic contains ideas for writing, allowing one to utilize the content for practice. After all, I'm not an expert, just one who has the curiosity for crafted writing. Maybe this book may be sufficient enough to hone in the skills of poetic writing; for me, exploring other poetry books invites more perspective and this is a starting point. (Book condition) I have just started reading this book, so there is not much input I can include. For now, my review is not based on the content, but rather the condition of the book. I was bummed that this book came in damaged on the lower spine, and had to order another copy, so I can return the other copy later. It is disappointing, books that have been returned have not been inspected. Even if we cannot contact the representatives, I decided to slip a note about it, so others do not receive the copy I returned. end of rant. I will update on this book, once I have immersed myself in this book. I am a beginner and even though I learned poetry in high school, I wanted to delve into this book, so I can practice writing.

Two practing poets share guidance and inspiration
Format: Paperback
Normally I'm suspicious about guides to writing poetry. The creation of a poem is such a personal and private affair, that I tend to despair of long distance help. Happily "The Poet's Companion" strikes such a balance between inspiration and craft that it's the next best thing to participating actively at an outstanding workshop. I benefitted from the poetic themes and supported exercises, feeling creatively rejuvenated by the authors' challenges. It seems to have no ideological axe's to grind-its only goal is to advance the poetic impulse from the brain to the page. I am truly grateful to have this book as it has aided in a personal liberation from a massive case of writer's block. I recommend this book to everyone of us who loves to read and learn the practices of writing poetry.
