Philodendron brandtianum is a climbing species with small, heart-shaped juvenile leaves marked in strong silver-grey between the veins. It can trail when young, but its natural habit is appressed climbing, with stems growing close to trunks or other vertical surfaces.
Juvenile leaves stay smaller and strongly silver-marked, with green showing around the veins and margins. Older climbing growth may produce larger, greener leaves with a lighter silver pattern than the juvenile growth usually sold as a houseplant.

The juvenile leaves are green, heart-shaped and overlaid with silver. Older climbing growth may become larger and greener, with less of the heavy silver pattern seen on juvenile leaves. On support, the plant can make a denser column of juvenile growth; left to hang, stems often stay thinner and leaves smaller.
Philodendron brandtianum support and leaf care
- Support: Use a slim pole, plank, or textured stake for its smaller leaves and close-climbing habit.
- Light: Give bright, diffused light to support denser growth. Direct sun can mark the thinner juvenile leaves.
- Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 18–28°C, and avoid cold draughts or chilled windows.
- Watering: Let the top 25–40% of the pot dry before watering. This species tolerates slight drying better than a constantly wet root zone.
- Substrate: Use a loose mix with bark, perlite, and a moisture-holding organic base so fine roots get both air and even moisture.
- Humidity: Average indoor humidity is often tolerated, but higher humidity reduces dry tips and helps fresh leaves open smoothly.
- Repotting: Move up one pot size when roots fill the container, the mix dries very quickly, or the support needs a steadier base.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertilizer, avoiding strong doses on dry roots.
- Propagation: Propagate from stem cuttings with at least one node; rooted tips and sections with aerial roots establish fastest.
- Pruning: Trim long stems above a node to encourage fuller growth, then root the cuttings to thicken the pot.
- Semi-hydroponics: Suitable for mineral or semi-hydro setups if transitioned gradually and kept with airflow around the crown.
Philodendron brandtianum pattern and stem issues
- Weak silver pattern: Check light first. Very low light can make growth thinner and less defined.
- Crispy tips: Often linked to dry air, irregular watering, or salt buildup. Flush the mix occasionally and avoid overfeeding.
- Thin, stretched stems: Move the plant closer to bright filtered light and give it a surface to climb.
- Yellowing after watering: Inspect the roots and lower stem. Fine or compacted soil can stay wet long enough to cause root stress.
- Pests: Check leaf undersides, petioles and stem nodes for spider mites, thrips, scale or mealybugs, especially on dense growth.
Philodendron brandtianum is harmful if eaten and may irritate skin or eyes through sap contact. Keep it away from pets and rinse your hands after pruning.

A True Arthurian Legend
Format: Mass Market Paperback
The Once and Future King provides an excellent perspective into the world of Arthur, the King of England. This book is divided into four sections, each dealing with the different aspects of Arthur's life, including both the good and the bad. The first book, the Sword and the Stone, has been immortalized by countless movies, such as the one by Disney. This book deals with the upbringing of Arthur, or in this case, Wart, his childhood nickname. Here we see the trials Wart must face as he learns about the many forms of leadership, courtesy of his mentor, Merlyn.
The second book, the Queen of Air and Darkness, is a prelude to the collapse of Arthur's kingdom. The result of this book begins to brew throughout the entire novel, finally impacting at the end of the final book.
The third book, the Ill-Made Knight, is my personal favorite. This book is about Lancelot's personal quest to become the best knight in the world. This book is filled with exciting quests that Lancelot has taken up, including such things as saving a maiden from a boiling pot of water, as well as the ill-fated quest to find the Holy Grail.
The fourth and final book, the Candle in the Wind, deals with the collapse of Arthur's kingdom. Arthur's sins "come home to roost" in this book, forcing him to make decisions that could jeopardize the safety of his wife, Guenever, and his best friend, Lancelot.
This novel is truly one of the classic fantasy books that one reads and never forgets. Although there are many portrayals of the Arthurian legend, this is without a doubt one of the better ones.

A novel about all of life
I've read this novel (and listened to the excellent audio book narrated by Neville Jason) in all its different versions over several decades and every time come away with fresh admiration not only for White's fantastic prose style but also for his insight into all aspects of human character and the workings of society. I cannot over-emphasise how rich it all is.
For those who have only read The Sword in the Stone (or seen the Disney version), it is important not to write this volume off as a children's story. Each of the four or five books that make up The Once and Future King reflects a different stage in life and experience. The greatness and the tragedy of the story is something we fully recognise only as we grow older. All of the books are wonderful, but The Ill-Made Knight (the third) is an education in adulthood.
The background of the entire work from individually-published volumes is a little messy. The Kindle edition I have seems to match the Harper Voyager paperback complete edition which has the integrated four-book version (with the geese and ants integrated into The Sword in the Stone, and Madam Mim removed) and The Book of Merlyn added at the end without any changes to fix the resulting duplication. This is the form in which I am most familiar with all the parts. The Neville Jason audio book available through Audible is synchronised with the Kindle book but actually includes a different version of The Sword in the Stone (Madam Mim included). When I first listened to this, it frustrated me, because the sections on the geese and ants seem so essential. However, taking it all in its entirety, it works very well and avoids the duplication that otherwise occurs. Neville Jason's reading is of the highest quality, with clearly recognisable voices for all characters.

Excellent Though Quite Different Than I Expected
I lover the old Disney film version of Sword in the Stone, so I finally got around to reading the book. I love the first where it is a whimsical children’s tale. I expected a different feel as it went on and it does, just not quite what I thought it would be. I found it amusing that it is written as an almost companion to Mallory. Take that for what you will, but it is quite enjoyable.

A classic
Format: Mass Market Paperback
The Once and Future King is a saga I didn't want to end. There's enough in it to read it again, and again. The paperback squeezes 4 books into a volume you can carry in a purse, but unless you're traveling, I would recommend buying the books separately, with illustrations.

The Once and Future TH White
This book is in my lifetime top ten list. I've read it three times. Its pages are full of wisdom, humor, mysticism and hard life, an unbeatable combination. I call the story "a hopeful tragedy." For sure it is a high tragedy up to Greek levels and then some. And yet it's hopefulness lies in King Arthur's ability to continue deepening, learning, reaching for the goodness that he still believes is in every person.
Someone said that The Once and Future King was the "Harry Potter" of its day. While I love the Harry Potter series, Rowling is no T.H. White. Her writing is a serviceable yeoman's march compared with White's kingly, profound, sometimes soaring performance. Harry changes very little as he grows up, while his supporting characters seem to stay exactly the same. Not so with Arthur. He changes before our very eyes, sometimes not for the better, as does Lancelot, Guinever and others. Though both tales are mythological, White's story feels real and gets us deep down in the bowels of our conscience, our morality and our fears. Eventually, it provokes compassion, allowing us to become more forgiving of ourselves and others. Not a bad way to live in the world. When you really learn something, you become a different person. You will really learn something from The Once and Future King, making T.H. the Once and Future White.
