Nova Red Raspberry – Disease-Resistant, Cold-Hardy & Reliably Productive

If you want a raspberry that practically takes care of itself, the Nova Red Raspberry is your plant. Developed for exceptional disease resistance and cold hardiness, Nova is one of the most reliable and low-maintenance raspberry varieties available — producing large, bright red, sweet-tart berries from mid-summer into early fall with minimal intervention required.

Its upright, self-supporting growth habit, outstanding disease resistance, and Zone 3 cold hardiness make it an ideal choice for northern gardeners, beginners, and anyone who wants a productive raspberry patch without the fuss. Available in 1 Gallon and 2 Gallon sizes, plus money-saving 2-Packs for a fuller, more productive patch from day one.

Why You’ll Love Nova Red Raspberry

  • Outstanding Disease Resistance: Notably resistant to common raspberry diseases including Phytophthora root rot, mosaic virus, and spur blight — less spraying, less worry, more berries
  • Exceptionally Cold-Hardy: Hardy to Zone 3 — thrives in cold-winter climates where other raspberry varieties struggle to survive
  • Large, Bright Red Berries: Firm, well-shaped fruit with a balanced sweet-tart flavor — excellent for fresh eating, freezing, jams, and baking
  • Mid-to-Late Season Harvest: Ripens mid-summer through early fall — extends your raspberry season beyond early-season varieties
  • Upright, Self-Supporting Canes: Naturally erect growth habit requires less staking and trellising than many other varieties — easier to manage and harvest
  • Pollinator-Friendly: Flowers attract bees and butterflies, supporting local biodiversity while you harvest
  • Container-Friendly: Compact, upright habit makes it one of the better raspberry varieties for large containers and patio growing
  • Perennial: Plant once and harvest for years — a well-maintained Nova patch can produce reliably for 10–15 years or more

Single vs. 2-Pack

Raspberries are self-fertile but produce more abundantly in groups. A 2-Pack gives you a denser planting from the start — more canes, more coverage, and a significantly larger harvest in the first productive season. For a serious raspberry patch, plant 3–5 canes per linear foot of row.

Growing Zones & Care Guide

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: Zones 3–8. Nova Red is one of the most cold-hardy and disease-resistant summer-bearing raspberry varieties available — an excellent choice for northern gardens and challenging climates.
  • Sunlight: Full sun — 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best fruit production and flavor. Tolerates partial shade but with reduced yields.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during fruit development. Raspberries have shallow roots — mulching with straw or wood chips helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Soil: Well-draining, loamy soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5). Nova’s disease resistance is particularly valuable in heavier soils prone to Phytophthora — raised beds are a great option if drainage is a concern.
  • Support: Nova’s upright habit requires less support than many varieties, but a simple post-and-wire trellis (two wires at 2 ft. and 4 ft.) keeps canes tidy and fruit off the ground.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes cane growth over fruit production.
  • Pruning: Nova is a summer-bearing (floricane) variety — it fruits on second-year canes only. After harvest, cut all fruited canes to the ground. Leave first-year canes (primocanes) intact — they will fruit next summer. Tip primocanes in late fall to encourage branching and more fruiting laterals.
  • Harvest Window: Mid-July through September, depending on your climate. Harvest when berries are fully red, slightly soft, and release easily from the plug with a gentle pull. Pick every 2–3 days at peak season.

Compare With Another Great Raspberry

Want two crops instead of one? Our Heritage Raspberry is an everbearing variety that produces both a summer and fall crop — a great complement to Nova’s mid-to-late summer harvest for a continuous raspberry season from June through October.

Disease-resistant, cold-hardy, and effortlessly productive — the Nova Red Raspberry is the low-maintenance, high-reward choice for any home berry garden.
