Sunglow Texas Primrose (Oenothera hybrid 'WNCYLASUN')

Sunglow Texas primrose is a heat-tough, low-growing bloomer that keeps sunny spaces looking bright with very little effort. It forms a dense, mounding mat that fills gaps, softens edges, and helps keep weeds from getting started. The clear yellow flowers pop against fine-textured foliage and keep coming through the warm season. If you need reliable color for hot, well-drained spots, this plant is built for that role.

Distinctive Features

This compact, mounding to trailing plant produces sunny yellow, cup-shaped flowers over finely textured green foliage for a clean, polished look. Blooming can begin in late spring and continue through summer, and in long-season climates it may flower into fall with periodic trimming. The habit stays low and spreading, making it ideal for edges and containers where you want color close to the ground. It is especially valued for strong performance in heat and for handling drier conditions once established.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun for the best flowering and tightest habit.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, especially sandy, rocky, or gritty soils that do not stay wet.
  • Water: Low to moderate water, watering regularly to establish and then reducing once rooted in.
  • Zones: USDA Zones 8 to 10.
  • Mature Size: Typically about 4 to 8 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Plant a bright drift at the front of a sunny bed where the yellow flowers read like a ribbon of color along the edge.
  • Edging: Creates a clean, low border along paths, beds, and sunny foundation lines.
  • Containers: Works well in pots and bowls where excellent drainage keeps growth dense and flowering strong.
  • Rock and Gravel Gardens: A natural fit for dry, open sites where many plants struggle.
  • Mass Planting: Repeating plants creates a uniform, low carpet with steady warm-season color.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Deadheading: Light trimming after a bloom flush can keep plants compact and encourage fresh flowering.
  • Watering: Avoid soggy soil, and water deeply but less often once plants are established.
  • Feeding: Use minimal fertilizer, because overly rich feeding can reduce bloom and loosen the habit.
  • Pruning: Shear back up to about one third if plants look open, then allow time to re-branch and refill.
  • Winter Care: In its hardiness range, keep crowns on the dry side in winter by prioritizing drainage.

Why Choose Sunglow Texas Primrose?

  • Heat Tolerance: Thrives in hot, sunny conditions where many flowering plants fade.
  • Low, Spreading Habit: Covers ground neatly to fill gaps and keep edges looking finished.
  • Long Bloom Potential: Provides extended yellow flowering through the warm season, especially with occasional trimming.
  • Waterwise Performance: Handles drier conditions well once established in well-drained soil.
  • Deer Resistance: Often resists browsing, making it useful in pressure-prone landscapes.

If you want dependable yellow color for a dry, sunny spot, Sunglow Texas primrose is a practical choice. Give it sharp drainage, let it establish, and it will settle into a dense, low mat that keeps showing up through summer. It looks especially good repeated along edges and in gravel-style plantings. With simple trimming, it can stay compact and floriferous for a long season.

Best toy I've found in a long time!
Color: Purple, Size: Medium (Pack of 1)
I got the small Nobbly for my 3lb puppy, but it's too big for her (she loves the xs bouncy ball one anyway). So my 15yo standard poodle adopted it and loves it. It's really too small for him so I watch him and don't leave him unattended. He is so old with bad teeth, and the softness of the center is great for him. It is totally cleaning his teeth, I see white where I haven't for years. But ZERO bleeding which is awesome. It's easy for him to hold and difficult for him to get to the rings, they last plenty long. I will order this one for him in a larger size, probably the medium. 100% satisfied with these toys! Ps I also have a hard chewing 12yo aussie that breaks teeth on anything like a bone. He gets thru the rings in minutes with the bouncy ball and nobbly, but takes way longer with the jack shaped one. He also likes to chew the purple ends of the jack, not just the rings. But I don't think they're hard enough to break his teeth. All of my dogs are different style chewers, but there is a good variety of designs so you can find the perfect one for your canine friend!

Dog-approved toy!
This dog toy was initially confusing because the instructions did not say or show where to find the power button and charging port. They were nowhere to be found until I realized I could unscrew the bottom part of the ball from the top (see picture). That revealed the button and port -- problem solved. Then on to the dog test. Our dog was initially confused by and ultimately fascinated with the ball as seen in the video. There are several operating modes depending on how active your dog is/wants to be. The toy seems quite rugged, so immune to rough dogplay, at least from a golden retriever. Our dog considers this a hit!
