They are native to dry, rocky mountainous terrain in Pakistan and are used by family farmers in northern India as a living fence to protect livestock. It grows columnar branches about 2 inches thick that have short, paired spines on the edges of its five ribs. They are a popular variety because they grow relatively quickly, require little to no maintenance, and are very adaptable. When they are hydrated properly, they produce bright green 3-in. long, lush succulent, tear-drop-shaped leaves at the top of each arm giving them an umbrella-like appearance.

Cuttings are easy to root.
