Grow-Your-Own Carnivorous Jungle – Mixed Carnivorous Plant Seed Kit
Ready to grow something wild? This Mixed Carnivorous Plant Seed Kit is your all-in-one passport to a bug-munching mini jungle! Featuring seeds for three of the world’s most curious insect-eaters — Dionaea muscipula (Venus Flytrap), Sarracenia (Trumpet Pitcher), and Drosera (Sundew) — this kit is perfect for green-thumbed adventurers of all ages. Whether you’re shopping for a science-loving kid, a houseplant collector, or just someone who likes weird plants, this is a gift that bites (in a good way).

What’s Inside:
🪴 Seeds for Three Carnivorous Stars – Approx. 10 x Venus Flytrap, 10 x Trumpet Pitcher, and a sprinkle of ~100 dust-like Sundew seeds (they’ll come up first — tiny but mighty!). Sundew seeds are supplied on a dried flowerhead – just give it a gentle scratch over the soil to sow.
🪴 3 Growing Pots + Clear Cups – The perfect size to start your carnivorous crew and keep humidity levels just right.
🪴 Carnivorous Plant Compost – A special peat-based mix to keep your future fly-eaters thriving.
🪴 3 Wooden Labels – Because all good experiments need name tags.
🪴 Step-by-Step Instructions – Easy-to-follow growing tips for every stage, from seed to snack-trapper.

Fun Fact: These plants are native to nutrient-poor soils — so they evolved to snack on bugs instead! Germination is a slow and magical process, with Sundews popping up first, followed by Venus Flytraps and Trumpet Pitchers. Patience is key, but the payoff is seriously cool.

Pet Friendly: Yes-ish — not toxic, but maybe don't let curious paws dig around!

Interesting History
Format: Paperback
My husband grew up close to Donner so he knew this story well. I found it very interesting to hear this from him and visit the area many years ago. My kids had just visited the Donner museum over Thanksgiving break and my 10 year old loves the "Who Was" series and these "I Survived or Escaped" books. My 9 year also reads them.

No gory details.
Format: Paperback
While the “Donner Party” is a very disturbing topic from US history, I feel this book gently writes through the gory bits but keeps relevant to the suffering of those on Oregon Trail which makes this very suitable for young readers.

Engaging and Different!
Format: Hardcover
Looking for a new kid's author to try now that Harry Potter has retired to a quiet life out of the spotlight? Try Stuart Gibbs. His first novel, Belly Up, is an engaging mix of mystery, humor, and adventure (as well as lots of trivia about the animal kingdom ranging from the fascinating to the . . . well, I'll let you read the book!) The story takes place at FunJungle, a huge new zoo/amusement park filled with many colorful characters. When the not-so-loveable mascot of the park, Henry the Hippo, turns up (literally) dead one day, only 12-year old Teddy, the son of two zoo employees, recognizes that this was no random event and begins his investigation only to find himself a target. The book is perfect for the 5th-8th grade crowd (although very enjoyable for us grown-ups who haven't quite grown up yet and still love well-crafted young adult titles). I'll definitely be following his next book (not a sequel to this but an adventure based on the Three Musketeers when they were younger) which looks like will be available this fall.
