👨‍🌾GARDENING TIPS👨‍🌾:

\n
    \n
  • \n
      \n
    • ✂️Cut them back if they get too long or too leggy - they respond well to a trim!
    • \n
    • ❄️ Crassula ovata does not appreciate the frost - so do make sure to bring them inside during the frosty months.
    • \n
    • ☀️As with all the Crassulae, Crassula ovata is extremely drought-tolerant and loves the sun. This in turn means that they hate moist soil > keep it dry

The Tale & The Botany: Crassula ovata 'Hobbit'

\n"Crassula" means thick or fat in Latin, referring to the leaves that become plumpy the more water they are able to store. \n \nThis is a good indicator of the health of your crassula - if less plumpy, then she needs a dash of water! \n \nThis genus was first named in 1862 and the genus contains 150-200 species, most of them occurring in South Africa. \n \n"Ovata" comes from the Latin word meaning egg-shaped. And indeed, the leaves are a little egg-like. \n \n'Hobbit is a horticultural variety developed in California - alas no relation to Tolkien here. \n \n
\n \n

🌸 Floral Morphology

\n

Jade plants produce small, star-shaped flowers that are typically white or pale pink, often with a subtle sweet fragrance.

\n

Flowers appear in dense terminal clusters during winter or early spring, although flowering is more common in mature, well-cared-for plants.

\n

The leaves are opposite, oval to obovate, thick, and fleshy, ranging from bright green to deep green, sometimes developing a reddish tint on the margins in response to strong sunlight or cold.

\n \n \n
\n \n

🌱 Reproductive Biology

\n

Crassula ovata reproduces both sexually via seeds and vegetatively through cuttings or offsets.

\n

Flowers are hermaphroditic and attract pollinators such as bees and flies, but most propagation occurs through leaf or stem cuttings, which root readily under suitable conditions.

\n

This vegetative strategy allows the plant to form dense, shrubby structures over time.

\n \n \n
\n \n

🌍 Ecology & Adaptations

\n

Native to arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa, Crassula ovata has evolved several adaptations for survival in dry environments:

\n \n
    \n
  • \n
      \n
    • \n

Succulent leaves store water for prolonged drought periods.

      \n
    • \n
    • \n

CAM photosynthesis allows the plant to minimize water loss while maintaining metabolic activity.

      \n
    • \n
    • \n

Thick, woody stems provide structural support and enable the plant to reach up to 1–2 meters in height outdoors.

      \n
    • \n
    • \n

The plant tolerates poor, well-drained soils, full sun, and occasional frost, although it is sensitive to prolonged freezing.

Too flimsy but a crowd pleaser
Color: Spider
My dogs absolutely loved them so I gave it 4 stars but it probably only deserves 3 stars due to how easily these can be destroyed. I have small dogs and they destroyed them very quickly.

Perfect for small dogs!
Color: Spider
These are so cute. My 10 pound Havanese absolutely loves these. They are the perfect size for her. I couldn’t put them away with the Halloween decor because she carries them everywhere. She has one in the bed, one in the car and one for around the house. Very durable and fun for her.

Colorful, Durable, and Totally Adorable! Perfect for Halloween
Color: Bats, Color: Bats
I absolutely love these bats! I’ve bought them multiple times and still adore them… they add such a fun, whimsical touch to my Halloween displays. The colorful wings give them a unique charm you just don’t get with typical black bat props. The quality is impressive too: even after a couple of rainy outdoor seasons, my first two sets are still holding up great. And yes… I know they’re technically dog toys, but my pups already have plenty of playthings… I’m pretty sure they don’t mind!
