Scadoxus multiflorus, better known as the Blood Lily, is one of those plants that gardeners remember long after they first see it. It does not look like a typical flower at all. When it blooms, it produces a rounded firework of bright red flowers held above bold green leaves, and it always sparks curiosity and conversation.

Grown from a bulb and planted in spring, the Blood Lily slowly builds anticipation. First come the glossy, strap shaped leaves, which already look handsome in a pot or border. Then, in early to mid summer, a strong flower stem appears and opens into a perfectly rounded head made up of dozens of tiny star shaped flowers on fine red filaments. The effect is dramatic but elegant, and the flower lasts well for several weeks.

One of the things UK gardeners often ask is whether it will grow well in our climate. The answer is yes, with a little common sense. Scadoxus multiflorus enjoys warmth and does best in England when grown in a container. This allows you to give it a sunny, sheltered spot outdoors in summer and move it somewhere frost free over winter. Many gardeners grow it very successfully on patios, balconies, or in conservatories and greenhouses.

Planting and care
Plant the bulb in spring once the risk of frost has passed. The bulb should sit quite high, with only the lower part covered and the top just above the soil surface. Water sparingly at first, then more regularly once growth begins. During the growing season, it appreciates consistent moisture and an occasional feed. After flowering, let the leaves die back naturally, as this helps the bulb recharge for the following year.

Good to know
- Despite its exotic appearance, the Blood Lily is not difficult to grow
- It thrives in warmth and bright light
- It is ideal for containers and makes a striking focal point
- With winter protection, it will reward you year after year
- Also known as Fireball or Powderpuff lily

If you enjoy growing something a little different and love plants that feel special rather than ordinary, Scadoxus multiflorus is a wonderful choice. It fits beautifully into UK gardens when treated as a summer feature plant, and once you have grown it, it is hard not to fall for it.

We love El Tummy Time!
Format: Board book
The bright colors and pictures are so fun, and the thick board book material makes it durable. Our big kids love to name the animals while baby does tummy time so it’s great to get multiple kids involved.
