PLANTING

Ocimum basilicum

Annual

Germination:  5-10 days

Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 65-70ºF

Seed Planting Depth:  Sow on the surface and lightly cover

Starting Indoors:  Start indoors 4-8 weeks before the last frost. Provide 65-70ºF soil temperatures. Transplant after the last frost, 8-12" apart.

Sowing Outdoors:  After the last frost, sow a few seeds every 2-4”. Thin to the strongest seedling, 8-12" apart. Sow heavily seeded rows and use the baby greens earlier in the season. Sow again in mid-summer for later harvests.

Growth Habit: Upright, branching

Height and Width: 10-12” x 12-18”

Spacing:  8-12” apart

Light Needs: Full sun

Soil Needs: Fertile, moist, well-drained

Harvest: Start when the plants are 6-8”, picking leaves as needed. Harvest often to keep the plant producing new leaves. Freeze or dry to preserve

Uses: Culinary and medicinal, containers, flowers attract pollinators and beneficials

Care: Siam Queen Thai Basile needs fertile soil, amended with compost and/or added organic fertilizer. Basil does not like to dry out, keep well watered for optimum growth, mulching will help retain moisture.

Tips: Pinch seedlings back to encourage branching and increase leaf production. Pinching off the flowers helps the plant continue producing leaves. We like to pinch off flowers on some plants and leave flowers on others for the pollinators. Flowers are also nice in mixed bouquets. Try growing basil indoors on the windowsill or under grow lights. Growing basil as a micro green is an easy way to enjoy fresh basil during the winter months.

Read This In One Sitting…..
Format: Hardcover
Not pregnant yet, but this book was the perfect balance of information and real-life story. It was so relatable and reassuring—I suddenly didn’t feel crazy for all the hours of baby research I’ve been doing. I never felt pressured, just encouraged and entertained while learning so much. Such a refreshing read, you won’t regret getting this one!

Great Buy for First-Time-Mama's
Format: Hardcover
This is my first pregnancy, and I'm very happy I purchased this book. Meghan Trainor will make you laugh and she gets very real with you—it was almost as if I was hanging out with an old friend when I sat down to read. It's a mix of a memoir, a diary, and advice from experts including her personal trainer and her OB/GYN—including exercises by trimester and recipes. She also recommends some products without being sales-y. If you're a first-time-mom (or even if you're not), this is a great buy that's not like other pregnancy books (those can sometimes be information overload in my opinion). This would also be a great gift for a newly pregnant friend. You don't have to be a Meghan Trainor fan to enjoy this book. Book Highlights/Helpful Thoughts - One of my favorite phrases was "influencers are great, but they make pregnancy and labor an aesthetic, and girl, pregnancy is not an aesthetic, it's rough!" - Meghan wanted to give birth vaginally, but due to complications, she had to have a schedule C-Section and she talks about that experience extensively is a way that was helpful. I'm personally doing everything I can to have a natural vaginal birth, but life sometimes has other plans. It was helpful reading her take instead of reading the Reddit horror stories. I now know what to expect in a non-traumatizing way if I were to need a C-section. - Meghan was pregnant during the height of the Covid Pandemic in 2020—so her experiences are based on that. I say this, because she talks a lot about how her husband could not join in at any of her ultrasound appointments and her labor team was limited due to the restrictions. Thankfully appointments are no longer like that.
