Jojoba Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Xeriscape & Zero-Water Landscaping

Jojoba is the ultimate xeriscape plant. Once established (after 1–2 years), it can survive entirely on natural rainfall in the Phoenix Valley — no irrigation needed. Its dense, rounded form provides beautiful year-round structure without the water bill. Plant it as a specimen, in mass groupings, or as an anchor in a zero-water native garden in Gilbert, Tempe, or Peoria.

Privacy Screening & Hedging

Jojoba's dense foliage makes it an excellent privacy screen or informal hedge. Plant 4–5 feet apart for a thick evergreen barrier. A 30-foot fence line needs about 6–7 plants. Unlike many hedges, Jojoba requires almost no supplemental water and very little pruning to maintain a tidy appearance.

Wildlife & Native Habitat

The seeds (nuts) are a food source for desert wildlife including javelina, squirrels, and birds. Jojoba provides cover and nesting habitat for native desert birds. Plant alongside Fairy Duster, Desert Hackberry, and Chaparral Sage for a complete native wildlife garden that supports the local ecosystem.

Best Time to Plant Jojoba in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is the ideal planting window. Warm soil encourages root establishment while cooler air reduces transplant stress. Spring (February–April) is the second-best option. Avoid planting in peak summer heat — Jojoba establishes best when given cooler months to develop roots before facing its first Phoenix summer.

How to Plant Jojoba

  1. Dig wide, not deep — 2–3x the root ball width, same depth as the container.
  2. Check for caliche — break through any hardpan layer to ensure proper drainage.
  3. Backfill with native soil — Jojoba prefers lean, unamended desert soil. Do not over-amend.
  4. Spacing — 4–5 feet apart for hedges; 6–8 feet for individual specimens.
  5. Water basin — build a 3–4 inch soil ring around the root zone to direct water to roots.
  6. Mulch — 2–3 inches of gravel or decomposed granite (avoid heavy organic mulch).

Watering Jojoba in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

Weeks 1–2: Every 2–3 days, deep and slow (20–30 min). Month 1–2: Every 4–5 days. Month 3–6: Every 7–14 days. After Year 1: Every 3–4 weeks summer; no supplemental water needed in winter.

Drip Irrigation

Place 1–2 emitters 18–24 inches from the base. A 1–2 GPH emitter running 30 minutes per session works during establishment. After year 2, most Jojoba plants can be weaned off irrigation entirely — they're one of the most drought-proof landscape plants in existence.

How fast does Jojoba grow in Phoenix?
Jojoba grows at a slow to moderate rate, adding 6–12 inches per year. It's a long-lived shrub that reaches full size in 5–8 years but looks attractive from day one thanks to its dense, silvery foliage.

Is Jojoba native to Arizona?
Yes — Jojoba is native to the Sonoran Desert and grows wild across southern Arizona. It's perfectly adapted to extreme heat, low rainfall, and alkaline desert soils.

Can Jojoba survive without irrigation?
Yes — once established (after 1–2 years), Jojoba can survive entirely on natural rainfall in the Phoenix area. It's one of the most drought-proof landscape shrubs available.

Does Jojoba need pruning?
Very little. Jojoba naturally forms a dense, rounded shape. Light pruning in spring can shape it if desired, but it's not required. This is a truly low-maintenance plant.

You May Also Like

Desert Hackberry — Native wildlife shrub with year-round berries for birds. Great xeriscape companion.

Chaparral Sage — Aromatic purple-flowering native. Perfect fragrant companion in dry gardens.
Texas Sage — Classic Arizona shrub with purple blooms after summer rain.

How Many Jojoba Do I Need?

Jojoba matures around 4 to 8 feet wide. Space plants about 5 feet apart center-to-center for a dense evergreen screen or hedge, or 6 to 8 feet apart for rounded individual specimens. Use this guide for a privacy screen:

Screen Run Length Plants Needed (5 ft spacing)
15 ft 3 plants
25 ft 5 plants
30 ft 6 plants
50 ft 10 plants

Jojoba Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb–Apr): Small inconspicuous flowers appear (plants are male or female), and a flush of silvery new growth fills in the canopy. A strong second planting window before the heat.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Completely in its element. Handles extreme heat and reflected heat with almost no water, and female plants ripen their waxy seeds. No afternoon shade or extra irrigation needed once established.
  • Fall (Oct–Nov): Prime planting season. Roots establish fast in warm soil so the shrub is set before its first summer.
  • Winter (Dec–Jan): Holds its dense silvery evergreen structure through winter. Cold-hardy to roughly 15°F, so typical Valley frosts do not bother established plants.

Plant It With

  • Desert Hackberry: a thorny native that adds bird berries and habitat to a wildlife screen.
  • Fairy Duster: a compact native with pink powder-puff blooms for color at the shrub's feet.
  • Chaparral Sage: an aromatic purple-flowering companion for a fragrant dry garden.
  • Texas Sage: a classic silvery desert shrub that echoes the jojoba's foliage and blooms after rain.

Is Jojoba Right for Your Yard?

Jojoba is a fit for true low-water and no-water landscapes: native xeriscapes, evergreen screens, and wildlife gardens in full sun and reflected heat, in lean well-drained or caliche soil. Once established it can live on rainfall alone. It is not a fit if you want fast height, showy flowers, or a tidy litter-free plant right at a pool edge, since it grows slowly, blooms inconspicuously, and female plants drop seeds.

Unexpectedly original for a mafia book. I thought I read them all but I loved Emmy's personality. I liked her toughness and that she didn't give into the three hassholes, Ares, Hades and Vulc. Emmy and her mom were on the run for over a year when they found refuge with The Pantheon. Her mom reconnects with an old HS friend and while Emmy tries to keep to herself. Ares, Hades, and Vulc notice how different Emmy is from the girls they're used to and instantly want to get to know her and protect. But Emmy and her mom have more secrets then the boys knew and protecting her becomes a full time job. Will they get any benefits from being her bodyguards? High heat with a good storyline. Triggers of kidnapping and abuse.

Definitely worth a read
Format: Kindle
This book was everything. It was heart-wrentching, funny, thrilling, sweet, everything. You'll be angry. You'll be sad. You'll be shocked. So much happens and so much is still yet to be explained. I loved it. From the beginning, I was interested in Emmy as a character. She's extremely relatable. She's realistic. She has reactions and feelings that make sense! The boys will make you want to throw things sometimes, but they'll worm their way into your heart eventually. And that ending! Yes! Loved it

Was a great read. What a fantastic Hidden Gem I hope doesn't stay hidden. This was a great darkest reverse harem. The FMC was kidnapped in abuse in her past her and her mom are staying on the property of a different Mafia that uses Greek names. Hiding there for safety. The only person that knows is the leader's wife who is friends with the fmc's mom from high school. The FMC gets involved with the leader son and his two friends. They're all written really well Aries definitely stands out he's a really well-written great character. But I like them all. There is some other woman drama, so heads up there. But I would call this like a medium burn. They get together this book and there are some spicy steamy scenes. But I'm really here for the plot the plot is great the characters are great. I kind of had a feeling of one of the thing is going down from the title of the next book and just a feeling that I got. There are multiple povs it's more the fmc's point of view but we got the guys povs only need them which I really liked. I really love the story it's really enjoyable I'm so excited for next book and I'm really excited to see that the authors would be putting out a book every month after this book I can say I'm excited to read anything that she writes I'm hoping they're all RH. There were some like typos spelling errors but it did not hinder my reading experience. Just Small Things having someone do a once-over on could pick up. But honestly like it's is a five-star read in an extremely impressive debut and even if it wasn't a debut I would say it's impressive. It's hard to balance a story with this type of feel a lot of times I think it came out really well and I'm completely enthralled I can't wait for more highly recommend

Run little rabbit

Though a familiar trope, it had these teases of intrigue that are enough to keep the story interesting to pull the reader to keep reading, to invest in the plot. Enemies (bullies)-to- lovers, mafia, and RH tropes are all so overworked that there is very little new in the way of a storyline. While I can't say this story is utterly unique, I found myself enjoying the characters and their dynamics together. I look forward to seeing how things go from here between the guys and Emmy, and even how Paloma will fair.

I’ve never read a book by this author before, but she knocked it out of the park! Thanks so much for thinking of us readers who are left with book hangovers and just need the next book in the series. I just downloaded the next one. I don’t normally write reviews but this author needs to be out there so everyone can find her. Great book, excellent characters and pacing. Wonderful storyline.
