Vanilla Bean Orchid – Vanilla planifolia

Description

A beautiful climbing orchid vine that can be grown indoors in cooler southern climates or outdoors in warmer subtropical and tropical regions.

Vanilla grows much like an orchid and prefers warm, humid conditions with filtered light. It is a vigorous grower during the warmer months and will naturally slow or stop growing during winter before resuming again in spring.

Vanilla flowers require hand pollination to produce vanilla pods.

Taste

Fresh vanilla pods have a rich, sweet flavour that is far more aromatic and complex than most store-bought vanilla.

Use fresh vanilla to flavour:

• Ice cream

• Cakes and desserts

• Sauces and custards

At Rare Dragon Fruit, we also enjoy infusing fresh vanilla into honey, creating a rich butterscotch-flavoured honey.

Care

• Pot into a mix of ½ orchid mix and ½ premium potting mix

• Use high-quality potting mix (we offer our own blend)

• Grow in semi-shade, shade, or filtered indirect light

• Vanilla is a climbing orchid and requires support such as a coir or moss pole
