The sand has been washed and sorted to remove foreign materials and any obvious light-colored chunks. This material is mined in northern Arizona, and characteristic of the region's material I have found some tiny bits of peridotite/olivine mixed in!

Black lava sand is finely crumbled volcanic rock. It is a key component of DIY Pon mixes for succulents, cacti, aroids like hoya and philodendrons, bonsai, and carnivorous plants. The fine gravel can also be used in terrariums and fairy gardens. It is a decorative lightweight top-dressing that helps hold moisture in soil. Alternatively, mix it into the soil like perlite for a lightweight grit.

There are many cacti and succulents that are happy to be planted directly in lava sand or lava rock mixed with other rock types to create an inorganic soil—it more closely mimics low-nutrient natural growing conditions. The porosity of volcanic rock keeps it lightweight, so roots stay airy and dry. At the same time the porosity retains moisture well similar to LECA, so lava rock soils drain immediately but light moisture remains available to the plant. This makes it much more difficult to lose a plant to the soggy conditions that cause root rot. (And dissuades fungus gnats!)

How much do I need? If you aim to use this as a potting medium, a 2.5" square pot holds about 4.75oz, and a 4" round pot takes about 15 oz.

3/4 lb - best for one or two plants, fairy gardens, testing out the substrate.
1.5 lb - best for small plant collections, mixing with other substrates, terrariums.
5 lb - best for more advanced gardeners and larger projects.

🌟 15 lb BULK size now available!

My Golden Loves
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
My 8 month old Golden Retriever loves these. It is also one of the few products she cannot destroy. They smell as described and she loves to chew them and play fetch when. She can chew these easily without destroying them. Overall good value for the money for my Golden

Not Scented, but Dog Approved
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
They don't smell like peanut butter or bacon. But our dogs still love them.

If they squeaked, they would be the perfect ball!
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
I bought our 15 month old Coton several Chuck-It toys on an Amazon deal. He is incredibly playful, mischievous, and ball/toy obsessed, especially for anything that makes noise. He can also be very destructive so I love how durable most of their products are - they’re among our longest lasting toys and worth every penny. We have yet to take them to the dog park, but they’re a perfect size for sharing in plat time. And they are keeping him busy at home - that’s a good thing. The scent is subtle but strong enough for him I guess because he loves gnawing on them. If they had squeakers, they would be absolutely perfect. Hopefully Chuck-It will see an opportunity for that down the road!

Most durable fetch balls I know of.
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
These balls are the biggest balls of them all. Well, not the biggest, but the best. Every other ball she would chew up in short order and I'd be throwing her a floppy piece of rubber. She just wants to fetch, but if it's not bouncing, she can't catch it on the bounce. Got these balls in July and no damage to them. I just ordered another pair, but only because the other two somehow got stuck up in trees. We have some very old and very large oak trees so not so easy to retrieve. Hope they somehow drop someday. But in the meantime, Lassie will be happy with her new ones. Very highly recommended!
