Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise or Wild Banana, is a striking evergreen plant native to the coastal forests of South Africa. It is closely related to the more commonly known Strelitzia reginae, but it is much larger and more tree-like in form.

The Giant White Bird of Paradise can grow up to 10 meters (33 feet) in height, with a spread of 3–5 meters (10–16 feet). It has a sturdy, palm-like trunk that supports a crown of massive, paddle-shaped leaves. Each leaf can grow up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) long and is dark green with a glossy texture. The leaves are often torn or split by the wind, which adds to the plant's exotic appearance.

Spectacular Flowers: The plant produces large, boat-shaped bracts that house white and blue, bird-like flowers. These flowers can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length and are highly ornamental, though they may be hidden within the foliage in mature specimens. Since I didn’t remember which sunblock spray I had previously purchased (that was super awesome), I got this one with a few other ‘kid’ sunblock spray and stick. I had grabbed this one for a splash pad birthday party this weekend only to find out it’s messy and not eczema skin friendly. Either we got a defective bottle or it’s just the way it sprays: runny goops of sunscreen that takes awhile to dry properly (see photo). And when it dries it really does stick onto your skin as advertised (aka not breathable, pore clogging, will irritate sensitive/eczema prone skin). My youngest has eczema prone skin (that’s been flare up free for 3 years) had a severe break out on her arms after using this. And even for the sake of photo demonstration for this post my own sensitive skin got red/irritated. So does it stick-yup. Is it messy? Definitely. Easy to apply? No (your kiddos have to stay put until it dries). Did it provide sun protection? Maybe…? Sensitive skin friendly? No. Eczema skin approved? Definitely not. Recommended? Nope. We threw it away and requested a refund.
