With their fluffy texture and distinctive shape, each leaf of this succulent looks like a tiny, green paw. And if you even need another reason to love it, this plant is easygoing and light on care needs. Give it a decent amount of sun and water it every now and again

It's easy to see where the common name for this plant comes from. With their fluffy texture and distinctive shape, each leaf of this succulent looks like a tiny, green paw. Silvery-green in colour, each leaf grows directly off central stems, with new growth sprouting at the top of each stem. And if you even need another reason to love it, this plant is easygoing and light on care needs. Give it a decent amount of sun and water it every now and again (once the soil has dried out) and this cute & fluffy succulent will reward you with more of its adorable foliage.

Scientific Name
Cotyledon tomentosa subsp. ladismithiensis (small cup plant, woolly species, subspecies from Ladismith, South Africa)

Synonyms: Cotyledon ladismithiensis

In the Crassulaceae family, this plant was first published in 1936 as Cotyledon ladismithensis, this was updated following a 1977 paper which found that it is in fact a subspecies of C. tomentosa

Common Name(s)
Bear's Paw, Bear Paw Succulent, Bear Paw Cactus, Fuzzy Cotyledon

Origin
This plant is native to rocky outcrops between the Laingsburg, Ladismith and Muiskraal regions of South Africa

Light
Your Bear Paws will do best with some direct sun. A windowledge facing east, west or south should work well. If you're putting it somewhere very bright, make sure to acclimatise it gradually to avoid sunburn. If it isn't getting enough light it will grow leggy and start to lose its colour.

Water
Let the soil dry out totally between waters, and when you water, make sure it gets a good soak. It's useful to grow in a pot with really good drainage with succulents like this one.

Humidity
Bear Paws prefer low to average indoor humidity. Avoid placing it in overly damp or humid environments to prevent rot.

Soil
Plant in a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Added perlite, grit or sand in these mixes can improve drainage. Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil or when the plant outgrows its pot.

Food
Feed every couple of months in the spring-summer growing season. Feeding is less important in winter so you can pause feeding until the spring.

Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 18-26°C. Protect from frost and temperatures below 5°C, as this plant is not frost-tolerant.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
The fuzzy 'bear paw' leaves can trap dust, so gently clean them with a soft brush or by blowing air on them to keep the plant looking its best and ensure it can still access the sunlight.
In ideal conditions, this plant can produce clusters of pink-orange, bell-shaped flowers on long stems during the growing season, adding a vibrant pop of colour.

The really work!
Bought these or a friend with severely dry cracked feet. The change was significant and immediate. They wore them around the house for a day and that night they could already feel the difference.

Fabulously bizarre and effective
These silicone socks have to be the strangest item I have ever ordered from Amazon. However strange they are, I was pleasantly surprised with them. My order came with two pairs, and I took one pair out to wash before use. I laughed at handling them then because they were a cross between hospital socks and leftover mannequin skin…trippy. The socks dried fast, so I put on foot lotion and put the socks on. The socks are beige skin tones that cover the entire foot up to the ankle, basically booties. The silicone is very soft and makes putting on and taking off the socks easy. They are also surprisingly easy to walk around in because the bottoms have grips, again, like hospital socks. I walked on tile, hardwood, and carpet with no slipping. The booties also stayed in place with no issues. I was concerned my feet would sweat, but that didn't happen. I was able to wear them for 3 hours without sweaty feet. When I took them off, my feet were a lot more soft than before or if I had used regular socks. For reference, my feet are not terrible, but the skin around my toes is dry and peeling from my picking(gross, I know). The socks I got are a size large, which worried me because they are big, but the site said for my shoe size (9) that's what I should order, and they were right. They are the perfect size and stretchy for room. I can't believe how cool and well-thought-out these socks are, on top of working. Honestly, these are among the top 20 favorite items I've ordered from Amazon. They may look incredibly strange, and they are, but they work wonders.

THE DOG TREATS SO GOOD EVEN PHOEBE KNOWS THEY ARE FROM A WINNER
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 6)
These Wonder Bound pig ears are absolutely INCREDIBLE. Truly one of the greatest dog treats ever created. People come up to me and they say, Sir, my dog has NEVER reacted to anything like this. And I tell them, of course not. These are REAL pig ears. Not the fake tiny pieces you get from weak companies. These are STRONG ears. Beautiful ears. Now I do not personally eat pig ears. Everybody knows this. I have a tremendous diet. Very refined. But DOGS, they understand things on a deeper level. Dogs know QUALITY. Dogs know WINNERS. Some people don’t, but dogs do. And Phoebe. Very smart dog. People tell me she is one of the smartest. Incredible instincts. She saw this bag and immediately knew it was the BEST. Not good. Not great. The BEST. She did the excited thing dogs do. Very respectful. Very appreciative. Some say she even endorsed it. I’m not saying that. But many are. She took the ear and ran like she had just made the greatest deal of her life. Tremendous speed. Very athletic dog. Very loyal. And she chewed it with POWER. You could see it in her eyes. She was thinking, This is from a winner. Dogs sense that. They really do. The size is perfect. Not small. Not flimsy. A whole ear. The kind of treat a DOG OF DISTINCTION deserves. It keeps them busy, focused, and happy. Very important qualities. And let me tell you, Phoebe looked extremely satisfied. People saw it. They said, Sir, that is a dog who knows success. Five stars. Would buy again. If I were a dog, which I am not, I would ONLY eat these. They are THAT good. Just ask Phoebe. She knows.

Jake the Chocolate Lab Can't Tell You- But He Liked Them.
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 6)
I suppose that I should give you the details of my experience with the product. They came in a quality, resealing bag. I actually ordered this item from the Amazon page. I got them for my parents' dog Jake- a three year old chocolate lab. I hid one in my hoodie pocket and he began zeroing in on that area after a few seconds, wondering what was in my pocket. It may just be me, but if you aren't familiar with pig ears- they don't stink or anything like that. Yes, they are actual pig ears. But they contain pork and are a decent snack for dogs every now and then. In retail we would always sell out of pig ears. I took the pig ear out of my pocket. Jake took it in his mouth and proceeded over to his bed area where he licked the pig ear for about a minute, probably because it is salty. I don't wish to find out. He then carefully munched down on it and took a short drink of water. He then proceeded to run over and tackle me (as he is wont to do). Oddly, his breath did not stink. I bought these as an alternative to rawhide. Two decades ago I got my parents to stop buying rawhide (about as gross as beef 'pizzle' and instead buy pig ears and deer antler chews. He seems to like them, and if they aren't causing an issue I don't see why Jake can't have one every now and then, especially when he behaves.
