Schlumbergera 'Dutch Yellow' is a cultivated hybrid in the Cactaceae family, more commonly referred to as a Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus. Its wild ancestors come from the coastal mountain forests of south-eastern Brazil, where they grow as epiphytes or lithophytes in humid, shaded habitats. In nature, these plants root in mossy tree branches or rocky crevices, benefiting from filtered light, good air circulation, and moisture-retentive yet free-draining conditions.

The stems consist of flattened, jointed segments (phylloclades) with slight serrations or notches along their edges. 'Dutch Yellow' is notable for its large, soft yellow flowers, sometimes with cream or pale peach undertones, which develop at the tips of mature segments. The tubular blooms are adapted for pollination by hummingbirds and open fully to reveal layered petals and protruding stamens. Its arching to cascading growth habit makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or elevated pots.

Flowering is stimulated by shorter day lengths and cooler night temperatures, generally occurring in late autumn to early winter. When provided with appropriate seasonal cues and consistent care, 'Dutch Yellow' can reliably produce abundant blooms year after year.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light for healthy growth and flowering. Morning or late afternoon sun is beneficial, but protect from intense midday light to prevent stem scorch.
  • Water: Keep the potting mix evenly moist during active growth and flowering. Reduce watering slightly after blooms fade, allowing the top layer of soil to dry before rewatering.
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Increase ambient moisture by placing the pot on a pebble tray with water or misting occasionally in dry indoor air.
  • Media: Use a free-draining, slightly acidic potting mix containing orchid bark, peat, and perlite to replicate its natural epiphytic conditions.
  • Fertiliser: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Switch to a high-potassium fertiliser before flowering to support bud development.
  • Temperature: Maintain 18–24°C during growth. To initiate budding, provide night temperatures of 12–15°C for several weeks in autumn.
  • Repotting: Repot every 3–4 years after flowering, refreshing the mix and only increasing pot size when necessary.
  • Propagation: Take cuttings of 2–3 joined segments in spring or summer, allow them to callus for 24 hours, then plant in a well-draining mix.

Will not buy again
Size: 80P, Color: colored
We received the balls 5 days ago and so far our dog has destroyed a ball per day. At this rate, all the balls will be destroyed in 80 days. Not a good value for this product. We have other brand tennis balls that our dog has chewed on for months that have held up. We will not buy again.

good for light chewers
Size: 16P, Color: yellow
Decent number of balls for the price! Unfortunately, my dog obliterated half of the tennis balls within an hour, but I'm sure part of that is because he likes to carry more than one ball at a time and chew on them a little before dropping for someone to throw. Otherwise, they are super bright, making them easy to see in the dark or dark places. They have some bounce to them, which makes playing fetch a little more exciting. My dog loves balls, so he has no complaints other than they don't squeak.
