Looking for a low-maintenance grafted cactus that can add some charm to your indoor or outdoor space? Look no further than a grafted sand dollar cactus! This grafted cactus Sand Dollar ‘Astrophytum asterias’ is a unique and fascinating cactus that combines the characteristics of two different cactus species. It is created by grafting the top young part or twig (a process known as the scion), of the Sand Dollar cactus (Astrophytum asterias) onto the rootstock of another cactus species.
The scion of the grafted Sand Dollar Astrophytum cactus retains its distinct round shape and beautiful star-like patterns, resembling sand dollars found on the beach. These patterns are actually clusters of white or yellowish dots that cover the surface of the cactus, giving it a striking appearance. The rootstock, on the other hand, provides a strong and resilient base for the grafted cactus to grow. It helps the scion to establish a healthy root system and provides necessary nutrients and water to support its growth.
One of the benefits of grafting is that it allows the grafted Astrophytum asterias to have a faster growth rate compared to growing from Astrophytum asterias seeds. It also enhances its overall resilience and adaptability to different growing conditions.
When it comes to grafted Astrophytum asterias care, it is important to provide it with bright, indirect light, as direct sunlight can cause sunburn. Use the well-drained cactus soil mix for better growth of your cactus. To prevent root rot, water sparingly and allow the soil to dry between waterings. In terms of size, this grafted cactus can reach a height of about 12 inches and a width of 12 inches when fully mature. It is a compact cactus with vibrant flowers that add a splash of color to any garden or indoor space.
Additionally, you can grow this grafted cactus outdoors in the USDA zone 9 –11. It prefers warm and dry climates and may not tolerate freezing temperatures. So, it's important to protect it from frost and provide appropriate winter care or move it indoors if you live in a colder zone. Order now and enjoy this graft cactus beauty for years to come.
