What Is White Sage?

White Sage, also known as Bee Sage for its unique ability to attract pollinators, is a popular desert native plant, valued for its highly aromatic foliage and significant cultural history. When bruised, the leaves release a strong sage fragrance, and the dried leaves are traditionally used as incense in Native American ceremonies.

White Sage Appearance and Characteristics

White Sage produces stunning white flower spikes in the spring with tiny lavender spots, sometimes reaching up to 6 feet tall. Each spike can hold up to 100 blossoms and is favored by hummingbirds, carpenter bees, and bumblebees. White Sage also makes a beautiful addition to water-wise gardens and is especially striking under moonlight or night lighting.

White Sage Origins and History

Originating from the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico, White Sage is a sacred herb, particularly important to the Chumash, a Native American tribe. Called "Wey’Wey," its leaves are traditionally burned in ceremonies to cleanse the spirit, calm the senses, and invite divine healing during prayer.

White Sage Plant Care: Growing Tips

White Sage isn’t the easiest sage to grow, but here’s a short guide to help you get started:

Sunlight

White Sage requires at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It thrives in full sun, especially in hot, dry climates.

Soil

Good drainage is essential for White Sage. Use a sandy, rocky mix to prevent waterlogging. For potted plants, mix one-third sand into the soil to promote drainage and keep the roots healthy.

Watering

White Sage loves dry conditions. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Let it dry out between waterings, though never allow it to become completely dry.

Temperature

White Sage thrives in heat but can’t handle frost. Its sweet spot is a daytime temperature of 70°F to 85°F. In cooler climates, grow it in a container that can be moved indoors during colder months.

Potting

If you're growing White Sage in a container, choose one at least one-third larger than the plant’s root ball. Over time, you’ll need a wide pot (at least 25 liters) to give it room to grow. Add a drainage layer of small stones or clay shards at the bottom to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing

Apply a liquid fertilizer for potted plants every two months during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can affect the plant's aromatic qualities.

Pruning

Prune in early spring to encourage bushy growth. Prune again after the first flowering to promote a second bloom, and give it a final light trim in mid-August.

Uses and Benefits of White Sage

Truly a plant of all trades, White Sage has been cherished for its diverse uses. Here’s how you can make the most of this herb:

  • Ceremonial Uses: White Sage has been used for centuries in purification rituals. Native Americans burn the dried leaves as incense or in smudging sticks. Its aromatic smoke is thought to purify areas, objects, and people of evil spirits and negative energy.

  • Aromatherapy: The soothing scent of White Sage is widely used in aromatherapy to clear the mind, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. Its natural compounds, including eucalyptol, offer a minty, cooling effect that sharpens mental clarity.

  • Nutritional and Medicinal Value: White Sage is rich in essential oils with antibacterial and antifungal properties. Traditionally, it has been brewed into teas to soothe stomach discomfort and sore throats. The leaves can also be crushed as a topical ointment on skin irritations or chewed to provide hydration and freshen breath.

How to Make a White Sage Cleansing Stick

One of the most beloved uses of White Sage is making your cleaning stick for purification and rituals. Be sure to use White Sage or another safe herb, as some plants can be toxic or may not burn well.

Here’s how you can easily make one at home:

  1. Harvesting: On a dry, sunny morning, gather large, healthy leaves. Try to pick similarly sized leaves for a nice, even bundle. The bigger the leaves, the better!

  2. Bundling: Gather the leaves in a tight bundle. Tie a sturdy knot around the base, leaving a long tail of string for later.

  3. Wrapping: Use a natural twine like an embroidery thread, which burns easily. Wrap the bundle from the bottom to the top and back down in a zig-zag pattern.

  4. Finishing: Wind the string around the top of the bundle and leave another long “tail” at the opposite end. Tie the two tails together to create a handle.

  5. Drying: Hang your cleansing stick in a dry, dark space until it’s fully dried and ready to use.

Olay Intensive hydrating body wash
Scent: Berry Bubbly, Size: 20 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I really love this body wash. It is so good for the body. The smell is a sweet odor, but not strong, just right. I saw where this is a limited product. I hope not, because it leaves me feeling like I put lotion all over.

Smells Clean & Wonderful
Scent: Berry Bubbly, Size: 20 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I got the strawberry fizz wash and it smells divine! It lathers up nicely and provides a good clean feel. It washes cleanly so no residue or stickiness afterwards. Olay is a great product and I would like to try the Wicked scent as well. After using this once, my skin felt soft and amazing.

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.

No Scent and Gentle
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I broke out in a case of Perioral Dermatitis recently and bought this product to help before I could see my doctor. Avene Tolerance facial cleanser has no scent and is very gentle on my skin. It didn’t burn when washing with this product, and even helped to slough off the dead skin around my lips. My face feels clean, not dry. I am still going to see my doc to get an RX for the inflammation, but I do believe this product helped to alleviate the dryness and tightness of my skin and lips. I’ve used other Avene products and I’m very happy with them. Even though these products are more expensive, to me they are well worth the money because they are much more gentle on the skin than any other products I’ve used. I will buy this product again just because of the fact that it’s so gentle. PS: at the time of purchase for this product, I also bought Avene’s Tolerance Control Skin Recovery Cream (you don’t need to use a lot of this one on your entire face), and Avene’s Cicalfate for lips. Between these 3 products, my lips and skin feel a lot better (however, I will still see my doctor because I have Crohn’s Disease and Perioral Dermatitis is considered an extra-intestinal side effect of Crohn’s).
