About Brahea sp. 'Super Silver'

Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' is a distinctive cultivar of fan palm believed to be a selected form or possibly a natural hybrid within the Brahea genus. This exceptional palm is prized for its remarkably intense silver-white foliage, which surpasses the typical coloration found in other silver-leaved Brahea species. While its exact parentage remains somewhat uncertain among taxonomists, it is often associated with Brahea armata (Mexican Blue Palm) or potentially represents a hybrid between Brahea armata and another Brahea species.

Growth Habit: This palm develops as a solitary, upright specimen typically reaching mature heights of 6–8 meters (20–26 feet) in cultivation. The palm exhibits a slow to moderate growth rate, adding approximately 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in height annually once established. Its overall silhouette presents a symmetrical, well-proportioned appearance with a dense crown atop a sturdy trunk.

Trunk and Leaves: The trunk is solitary, straight, and columnar, usually measuring 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) in diameter. The defining characteristic of this cultivar is its spectacular foliage—the crown consists of numerous circular to semi-circular palmate (fan-shaped) fronds that display an exceptionally intense silver-white to silvery-blue coloration. Each frond measures approximately 1–1.5 meters (3–5 feet) in diameter, divided into 40–60 rigid segments.

Extraordinary Silver Beauty: The distinctive silver coloration provides unparalleled ornamental value in landscape settings. The leaf surfaces have a pronounced waxy, glaucous coating that creates the distinctive silver appearance and serves to reflect sunlight, reducing water loss in arid conditions. The petioles (leaf stems) are armed with curved thorns and display tan to light brown coloring that contrasts beautifully with the silver fronds.

Growing Conditions

Climate and Hardiness

Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' demonstrates excellent adaptability to various climates, thriving in USDA hardiness zones 8b–11. It shows remarkable cold tolerance for a silver palm, capable of withstanding brief exposure to temperatures as low as -9°C (16°F) with minimal damage when established. This cold hardiness makes it suitable for a wide geographic range from Mediterranean to desert climates.

Light Requirements

This palm achieves its most vibrant silver coloration when grown in full sun exposure. While it can tolerate partial shade, insufficient sunlight will result in greener foliage with less of the distinctive silver hue that makes this cultivar special. In desert regions with extreme summer temperatures, young plants may benefit from afternoon shade during establishment.

Soil Preferences

Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' demonstrates outstanding adaptability to various soil types, from sandy to rocky and even clay-based soils, provided they offer good drainage. It thrives in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions (pH 6.5–8.0) and tolerates soils with moderate levels of salinity, making it suitable for coastal landscapes. The palm's desert heritage enables it to perform well in nutrient-poor soils.

Water Requirements

Once established, Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' showcases exceptional drought tolerance, reflecting its adaptation to arid regions. During the establishment phase (typically the first 2–3 years), regular watering is essential to develop a robust root system. Mature specimens require only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Overwatering is more problematic than underwatering for this species.

Propagation from Seeds

Seed Collection and Preparation

Collect fully ripened fruits directly from the palm when they have turned brown to black. Remove the fleshy outer pulp by soaking the fruits in water for 24–48 hours, then gently rubbing off the softened material. Clean seeds should be allowed to dry for 1–2 days before sowing.

Sowing Medium and Germination

Sow the cleaned seeds in a well-draining medium consisting of equal parts perlite, coarse sand, and either peat moss or coir fiber. Plant the seeds at a depth of approximately 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches). Maintain consistent warmth with soil temperatures between 25–30°C (77–86°F) using bottom heat if necessary. High humidity (60–70%) promotes successful germination.

Germination Timeline

Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' seeds typically germinate within 2–4 months under optimal conditions, though some seeds may take longer. The first sign of germination is the emergence of a single leaf, which will initially appear more green than silver. The characteristic silver coloration typically develops as the seedling matures and is exposed to higher light levels.

Seedling Care

Young seedlings are vulnerable to fungal diseases, so maintaining good air circulation and avoiding overwatering are crucial. Transplant seedlings to individual containers when they have developed 2–3 leaves, using a well-draining palm mix. The distinctive silver coloration becomes more pronounced as the plants mature, with significant enhancement occurring once plants are moved to outdoor conditions with full sun exposure.

Planting and Care Guidelines

Planting Procedure

The ideal time to plant Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' is during the warm season. Select a location that provides full sun exposure and sufficient space for the palm's eventual size. Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the root ball and of equal depth. After placing the palm in the hole, backfill with the original soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets. Apply a 5–7 cm (2–3 inch) layer of mulch around the base, keeping it at least 15 cm (6 inches) away from the trunk.

Fertilization Program

Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' has moderate fertilization requirements. For established specimens, apply a slow-release palm fertilizer with micronutrients twice yearly, typically in early spring and mid-summer. In sandier soils with poor nutrient retention, more frequent applications at reduced strength may be beneficial. Avoid high-nitrogen formulations that can encourage excessive green growth.

Pruning and Maintenance

This palm is notably low-maintenance once established. Pruning should be limited to the removal of dead or damaged fronds, cutting them cleanly at the base of the petiole. Avoid excessive trimming of fronds, as this can stress the palm. The natural shedding of older fronds will maintain the palm's attractive appearance without extensive intervention.

Transplanting

Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' transplants relatively well for a palm of its size, particularly when young. When transplanting is necessary, it should be performed during the warm season, retaining as much of the root ball as possible. Reducing the canopy by removing a few of the oldest fronds can help reduce transplant shock.

Landscape Uses and Design

Focal Point and Specimen Planting

With its striking silver foliage, Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' serves as an exceptional focal point in landscape designs. The palm's architectural form and distinctive coloration create a strong visual impact. The exceptional ornamental characteristics make it ideal for prominent placement where its silver foliage can serve as a dramatic accent. When illuminated by landscape lighting at night, the reflective qualities create a luminous effect.

Water-Conserving and Mediterranean Gardens

The palm's outstanding drought tolerance makes it an ideal candidate for xeriscape gardens, water-wise landscaping, and desert-themed designs. The silver coloration complements Mediterranean plant palettes, including olive trees, lavender, and artemisia. It combines beautifully with agaves, cacti, and native desert shrubs while providing a distinctly different texture and form.

Coastal Landscapes

Due to its tolerance for salt spray and saline soils, this palm performs admirably in coastal landscapes where many other palms might struggle. Its resilience to wind further enhances its suitability for seaside applications. The distinctive silver coloration also provides excellent visual contrast against ocean backdrops.

Pests, Diseases & Care

Common Pests

Spider Mites: During extended dry periods, spider mites may colonize the undersides of fronds, causing stippling and discoloration. Regular inspection and maintaining adequate humidity through occasional foliage spraying helps prevent infestations. Scale Insects: These small, immobile pests may occasionally establish on fronds and stems. Treatment with horticultural oil provides effective control while preserving beneficial insects.

Disease Resistance

Brahea sp. 'Super Silver' shows excellent disease resistance, particularly to fungal issues that affect many other palm species. The primary disease concern is root rot, which is almost always associated with overwatering or poor drainage rather than pathogenic susceptibility. Ensuring proper planting and appropriate irrigation practices prevents most disease issues. In regions with extremely low humidity, leaf tip burn may occasionally occur as a physiological response to severe evaporative stress.

Great Watch For the Money
Color: Black/Black, Style: AE1000W-1BVCF
I have been purchasing Casio watch products for over 25 years now. Their watches are low cost and nicely designed. I was not let down when I received this watch and all for 18 dollars. The watch is nice looking, has mostly usable features which fulfills its purpose. For a watch that costs under 20 dollars this is a great knock-around piece that can be worn in any setting. Whether hiking/climbing in the woods, fixing the car, swimming or just plain rough housing with my kids, having a low cost and functional watch that fits all my needs really makes this product a great buy. This Casio comes with several functions: 1) You can track up to 4 different time zones. Since I do a fair amount of business travel (about 1x a month), I am constantly in different time zones. Now I can set them easily. 2) The watch has a manual DST setting which I don't mind. It's literally a push of a button. 3) It is water resistant to 10 Bar. This means swimmers, surfers, etc... can use this watch with confidence. 4) It comes with a typical alarm. I always make sure I know how to turn this off, because you know somehow some 2 or 3 year old will get it and find a way to turn on the alarm so that it wakes you and 0200 in the morning. 5) Stop watch. Not much to say here. I use it for running/walking Cons: A couple of oddball design features that are difficult to see. 1) The upper right hand circle is actually a visual of an analogue watch, so that if you look at another time zone besides the one that you set for your home city, you can get a quick view of the time. Not so easy to see. 2) The time zone characterization is also difficult to see and not so sure it is necessary, since the back of the directions lists out the cities you can use to select the proper time zones. So this may not be a "smart" watch which seems to be very popular these days, but I will say the price makes it very worth while. If you need a knock-around that looks nice and has the core functions you need, I think you will be very satisfied with this product. You know... maybe some things don't need to be smart. Enjoy!

It is mini computer for such a low price. My favorite. Just go for it, you will be amazed!
Color: Black, Style: AE-1000W-1AVDF
I would say this is a mini computer and I keep wondering how could they put these many functions inside this small watch and offering it for 15 dollars.I'm blown away by this wonderful product and this is my favorite watch all the time and I rarely wear my other watches. Isn't this amazing that it got the time for close to 50 cities and I can select 4 of them in T1(Home City), T2, T3 and T4 to easily flip through using the bottom right button. This functionality helped me a lot during my 2 international trips through multiple transits. Before the departure I select all the Cities that I'm transiting through so that I can easily flip to that time zone when I land in that airport and I do not need to rely on airport clock or internet to know the time and calculating the time left for catching my connecting flight. I love this watch especially for this functionality. While scrolling through the time zones for selection the tiny world map in the watch will blink the specific geographical area for that time zone. The capabilities of this watch does not end here, It has lot more to offer. We can program 5 daily or one time alarms into this tiny piece. Stopwatch, Counter, 12 or 24 hour time format, Day light saving ON or OFF which simplifies the time setting when the DST switches. We can set it to signal a beep for every hour. There is digitally displayed manual clock at the top right corner which will display your home country time stored in the T1 timezone. When I go on an international trip, I flip the digital display to local time(T2-T4) and will refer the home city time(T1) in the manual clock. The watch is really durable, light weight, stylish, sporty, water proof, 10 years battery life and comes with a detailed instruction for setting up each and every functionality of this watch. What more can I expect for a 15 dollar watch. My impression to buy this watch happened after seeing one my friends wearing it. I bought one for me and 3 more for giving it as gift. My friend lost it twice and bought the same watch 3rd time which proves how much he also likes it. The last thing that I want to say is, I don't like the fancy brands which charge their customers just for the sake of their brand name or fancy packaging and offer noting more than a normal brand offers. I always prefer quality over show off so I picked this Casio watch. I really appreciate that CASIO believed in quality and functionality and not on fancy packaging. I feel really bad that I'm writing this review after 1.5 years of my purchase and I should have done it long back. I highly recommend this watch for everyone and I'm sure you will never be disappointed.

The little watch that tried...and almost succeeded.
Color: Black/Black, Style: AE1000W-1BVCF
The main problem with this watch for me is it tries to do too much and relies heavily on the user. With Day light Savings time not being universal in when it starts, when it ends, and which countries decide to use it, it is a lot of work for some functions Day Light Savings time really hurts this watch and what it tries to do. This Casio watch is priced right and pleasant to look at. It has four main functions\modes. 1 Timekeeping 2 World Time 3 Stop watch 4 Alarm I'll focus on the first 2 as this is where it shines and falls short for me. In TIME KEEPING mode --Works Great You can set 4 different times and tab through them with the bottom right button. This is very useful and quite easy to set up. Upon setting up your local time the next three will be based off that and you only need to set Day Light Savings time on or off accordingly. This is easy to maintain and the world map reflects the time zone you are currently in. In WORLD TIME mode you can quickly tab through over 40 cities around the globe. This is where the watch falls short. You need to set each city depending on their Day Light Savings time. Some cities do not use DST, some start in the middle of March, Some start at end of March, ect.. If you do not mind doing this for each city in WORLD TIME which will require you to look up each of their DST information then this is a nice function. I'm not at all interested in doing this. This is a function an atomic watch would excel at but a manual setting watch it's not worth the effort The rest of the features are more than gimmicks. The world map is functional, especially if you set the DST for each of the cities in WORLD TIME. The analog dial always shows your current time no matter what mode you are in or which of the 4 cities you are on in TIME KEEPING mode. The light is unbalanced but sufficient to light the entire dial. You can change it to 3 seconds from it's factory 1.5 seconds which makes it much more useful. If you want this watch to keep track the current time in four cities it is very easy to set up and works quite well.

Well made, high quality wallet
Size: One Size, Color: Brown
I bought this for my husband for Father's Day. It's a beautiful, well made, quality wallet. The stitching is heavy duty and the leather is very nice. It isn't bulky. A few months of having it and it seems to have broken in well.
