Red Tip Moonstone succulents are a beautiful and distinctive variety of Pachyphytum oviferum, also known as Moonstones. Here’s a clear overview:

🌱 Basic Description

  • Scientific name: Pachyphytum oviferum (Red Tip variety)
  • Common names: Red Tip Moonstone, Pink Moonstone, Jelly Bean Moonstone
  • Family: Crassulaceae (the same family as Echeveria and Sedum)

🌸 Appearance

  • Leaves: Plump, egg-shaped (“moonstone”-like) leaves that store water.
  • Color:
    • Base color is usually pale blue-gray or silvery-green.
    • Tips develop a rosy red or pink hue when exposed to bright sunlight, cooler temperatures, or mild stress — hence the name Red Tip Moonstone.
  • Texture: Leaves are covered with a powdery farina (a natural waxy coating) that gives them a matte, frosted appearance.

🌼 Growth & Flowers

  • Size: Compact rosette, typically around 3–5 inches (7–12 cm) across.
  • Growth habit: Slow-growing, usually solitary but can form small clusters over time.
  • Flowers: Appear in winter to early spring — small bell-shaped blooms on tall stalks, usually orange, pink, or red.

☀️ Care Requirements

Care Aspect

Details

Light

Bright indirect light to full sun. Red tips intensify with more sunlight. Too little light → green, elongated growth.

Water

“Soak and dry” method — water deeply, then allow soil to dry completely before watering again. Overwatering can cause rot.

Soil

Fast-draining cactus/succulent mix; add perlite or pumice for aeration.

Temperature

Prefers 65–80°F (18–27°C). Protect from frost (<40°F / 4°C).

Humidity

Low humidity preferred. Avoid misting leaves.

Propagation

Easily propagated from leaf cuttings or offsets. Allow cut ends to callus before replanting.

🌈 Color Enhancement Tips

To keep or enhance the red tips:

  • Give it plenty of bright sunlight (morning or late afternoon sun is best).
  • Keep it in slightly cooler conditions (not cold).
  • Avoid overwatering, as too much moisture makes the plant stay green and lose its color.

⚠️ Common Issues

  • Leaf shriveling: Usually from underwatering.
  • Mushy or falling leaves: Often from overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Loss of farina: Touching the leaves removes their protective coating, leaving marks — handle carefully.

Excellent book
Format: Paperback
My grandson is seven and he does not like to read but with these books he is eager to read and find out what is happening in the next chapter. These books are more on the comic book format and they are really fun to read. I like them almost as much as my grandson.

2nd grade son's favorite book of all time!
Format: Paperback
So this is not classic children's literature with beautifully written passages a la The Velveteen Rabbit. This IS, however, the only book my 7 year old son has read repeatedly (6 times?) and BEGGED me to buy so that we would have our own copy when it was time to return it to the library. Santa brought him 3 gifts this year- a Cozmo robot, a drone, and this book- they were all displayed together. Guess which one elicited the first scream? "Sparks!!! Santa brought me Sparks!!!" This comic book is not Shakespeare for children but the story is creative and FUNNY, the illustrations are great, and boy does it keep my kids' attention (my 4th grade daughter also loves it, though not to the obsessive extent of my boy). Get it- your child will love it. This is not a book for YOU to read aloud- this is for the child to read on his/her own. So when The Wind in the Willows has them yawning, hand them this instead.

My son loved these books!
Format: Paperback
We found this book at the library. I was struggling to have my 7 year old read a book he was interested in. He started reading this and couldn't put it down. We bought the other two and he flew through reading them. He laughed and said it was such a good book that I need to read it. We have a pet cat named August so that was what peaked his interest and he loved that!
