Diatomaceous Earth For Potting Soil And Compost
Adding diatomaceous earth to your potting soil improves its texture and prevents it from becoming compacted. Its porous nature increases drainage while retaining moisture, making it especially valuable for peat-free and compost-based mixes. This helps roots breathe, access nutrients and grow more efficiently.
How To Improve Soil Quality In Pots With Diatomaceous Earth
Mixing 10–20% by volume into compost provides an instant boost to soil structure, moisture control and nutrient retention. A thin top layer can also help reduce water evaporation and discourage crawling pests such as fungus gnats. This keeps plants healthier and reduces stress caused by uneven watering.
Benefits Of Using Diatomaceous Earth In Garden Soil
- Holds moisture and releases it slowly for better hydration
- Improves soil aeration and drainage for stronger roots
- Supports healthy root growth and plant development
- Helps discourage certain crawling pests naturally
- Reduces nutrient loss through leaching
- Suitable for peat-free composts and garden beds
