One the most esteemed wild food plants of the continent ramps (aka wild leeks) are native to the woodlands of eastern North America -- yet we’ve found them to be fairly adaptable as a shade or forest garden plant, even outside of their native range.

In Western Washington we’ve had success growing ramps in the dappled understory of our farm forest land, especially within alder thickets and among mixed stands of big leaf maple. The plants persist well in moist, fertile soils, especially areas that get a lot of early spring sun, then late spring shade (e.g. under deciduous trees). First identifiable by their vibrant green spring foliage, the leaves die back in summer as the plants produce small white-purple flowers.

Note that these are slow to mature plants. Seeds tend to have some dormancy and can require both cold exposure and extended time in the soil (sometimes more than a year) to initiate germination. The tiny young plants are not competitive and require some space and access to light to survive. As they grow, the developing plants remain dormant throughout much of the late summer and winter, with a very active spring growth period. This limited annual growth period means that it requires several years before the plants mature enough to start flowering and producing seed.

With a flavor somewhere between garlic and onion, both the beautiful green leaves and the lower white stem of ramps are edible, and are excellent sauteed and added to numerous recipes. However, to sustain a wild-growing population, ramps should be clipped off at the base, rather than pulled from the ground (leaving the root system intact to sustain future growth). Additionally, it is best to not harvest the same plants repeatedly year-after-year. Rather, they should be rotationally clipped, allowing individual plants to have “rest” years without harvesting.

Because ramps are do not thrive under conifers, nor do they compete with thick old growth forest understory vegetation (such as salal and ferns), and because they are slow growing, they require very specific site conditions to establish themselves. Where those conditions exist however, ramps are a delight, and an interesting semi-wild forest food that many more people could be growing and enjoying.

Puppy interactive toy
Color: Orange, Color: Orange
It’s a great toy as it keeps my 5 month old puppy very entertained! It is pretty hardy and made of good material as she tries to throw it around and chew it. She does swing it around and the hard part will hit her. She doesn’t seem bothered by it tho lol good size and minimum noise When I first introduced her to it she was a little scared but now she gets excited to play with it once it finishes charging.

Cool toy. Fun for all
Color: Blue
A cool toy. entertainment for the dogs but more so for the dog parents to watch the dogs reaction. Comes with an additional rope just in case, which I loved. Only side note I would say is that the fast mood could be a little faster. My Golden retriever figured out the speed in less than 24 hours and now picks up the toy to try to chew it up, instead of chasing. With him attempting to chew on the toy in the small time I give him, there are no teeth marks yet…this toy appears to be durable. We play in short increments but enjoy the toy.

Fun toy, but not durable for large heavy chewers
Color: Orange, Color: Orange
I bought this for my 80+ pound Goldendoodle, and he absolutely loved it at first. He barked at it, chased it, and it gave him some great exercise and stimulation. It definitely kept his attention and was fun to watch him play with it. Unfortunately, once he was able to get it in his mouth, he chewed the orange end off fairly quickly. The company does include an extra replacement piece, which is actually a great idea and appreciated. However, he ended up chewing that one up too after a few more play sessions. This toy worked well for short-term play and entertainment, but it’s not durable enough for large dogs with strong chewing habits. I think this would be much better suited for small to medium dogs. Great concept, but I would not repurchase for a heavy chewer. Picture of my dog for size reference!! 🫶🐶

Good quality and definitely worth it for energetic dogs.
Color: Orange
The automatic moving and rolling action really grabs my dog’s attention, and the rope adds extra fun for chasing and playing. It helps reduce boredom and keeps my dog mentally stimulated, especially when indoors. The motion activation works well, and it’s a fun and engaging toy overall.
