Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria araucana)

Monkey Puzzle Tree is a bold evergreen conifer that turns a landscape into a statement with its dramatic, geometric branching and year-round structure. The stiff, armored foliage creates an unmistakable silhouette that feels sculptural even from a distance. It is best for gardeners who want a true specimen tree and have the space to let it mature without crowding. When sited well, it becomes a long-term anchor that makes surrounding plantings look more intentional.

Distinctive Features

This evergreen tree is known for thick, sharply pointed, overlapping leaves that cover the branches and create a rugged, architectural texture. Young trees are typically pyramidal, then broaden with age into a strong, layered form with widely spaced, horizontal limbs. Plants are usually dioecious, meaning male and female cones are typically on separate trees, and large seed cones on female trees can be heavy when mature. It performs best in climates with mild summers, and it appreciates steady moisture while establishing even though it can handle some dryness later.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with best density in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral, and avoid sites that stay wet.
  • Water: Medium, water regularly during establishment, then provide occasional deep watering during extended drought.
  • USDA Zones: 7 to 10.
  • Mature Size: About 40 to 70 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide.
  • Habit: Upright and pyramidal when young, maturing to a broader, layered evergreen form.
  • Foliage: Dark green, stiff, sharply pointed leaves that persist for years on the branches.
  • Flowers: Inconspicuous.
  • Cones: Large cones, with heavy seed cones possible on female trees.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Plant as a specimen where the distinctive form can anchor a main view and define the character of the landscape year-round.
  • Large-Lot Structure: Use as a permanent evergreen backbone tree in spacious landscapes with room to mature.
  • Evergreen Contrast: Pair with softer conifers and broadleaf evergreens to highlight its unique texture.
  • Coastal and Mild-Climate Gardens: Fit into regions with mild summers where it can grow steadily and hold its best form.
  • Collector Plantings: Add to conifer collections for a one-of-a-kind silhouette that stands apart from typical evergreens.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Prune minimally, removing only dead or damaged branches, since natural form is a major feature.
  • Watering: Water deeply during the first one to two growing seasons and during prolonged dry periods thereafter.
  • Mulching: Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch off the trunk.
  • Placement: Site away from tight walkways and play areas, and allow room for mature spread and surface roots.
  • Safety: Consider cone drop on mature trees and avoid siting female trees over high-traffic areas where heavy cones could be a nuisance.

Why Choose Monkey Puzzle Tree?

  • Unmistakable Form: Architectural branching and armored foliage create a true landmark tree.
  • Evergreen Presence: Holds structure and color year-round for dependable landscape backbone.
  • Low Pruning Needs: Naturally strong shape reduces the need for regular trimming.
  • Deer Resistance: Often browsed less than many evergreens because of the stiff, spiny foliage.
  • Long-Term Value: A slow-growing investment plant that becomes more striking as it matures.

If you have the right space and climate, Monkey Puzzle Tree is one of the most distinctive evergreens you can plant. Give it well-drained soil, consistent moisture while it establishes, and a site where its mature size is welcome, and it will develop into a permanent focal tree that stands out in every season.

Not worth the paper it’s printed on.
Format: Paperback
I can’t say that I was expecting such a slim volume on 10,000 years of Chinese culture to be a work of rigorous scholarship, but I also wasn’t expecting it to be quite *this* dreadful. It is badly written to the point of being unreadable, and it is clear that no one thought to edit the document before publication. I made it about twenty pages in before I had to put it down. The entire thing reads like an Anthropology 101 term paper written by a first semester college freshman who hasn’t quite figured out how to back up claims with evidence yet.

It all makes sense now
Format: Kindle
This book covers Ancient Chinese History, Starting from the Settlement at the Yellow River through the Xia, Shang, Zhou, and Qin Dynasties to the Han Dynasty. This should ring a bell for some folks as this is the period around the Yellow River shows the early development of man in this region. Ancient Chinese history is a tapestry of remarkable achievements, cultural developments, and political transitions that unfolded over thousands of years. It all began with the settlement at the Yellow River, where early agricultural communities emerged around 5000 BCE. This period witnessed the gradual transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to settled farming communities, marking the foundation of Chinese civilization. From this fertile ground, the Xia Dynasty rose in the 21st century BCE, establishing the first recorded dynasty in Chinese history. Although little written evidence remains, the Xia period laid the groundwork for future dynasties, fostering advancements in agriculture, irrigation systems, and early forms of government. The subsequent Shang Dynasty (16th–11th century BCE) witnessed great cultural achievements, including the development of a complex writing system and the creation of magnificent bronze artworks. It was during this era that the concept of the Mandate of Heaven emerged, which stated that rulers' legitimacy depended on their ability to govern effectively. Following the fall of the Shang Dynasty, the Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BCE) emerged and introduced the feudal system, characterized by a decentralized government. This era saw the flourishing of philosophy, with notable thinkers like Confucius and Laozi influencing Chinese thought for centuries to come. The Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE) unified China under the rule of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, bringing about remarkable political and administrative reforms. It standardized currency, measurements, and writing systems, and constructed the Great Wall of China. Although short-lived, the Qin Dynasty paved the way for the subsequent Han Dynasty. The Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) was a period of significant cultural and technological advancements. It expanded the empire's territorial reach, established the Silk Road, and embraced Confucianism as the official ideology. The Han Dynasty left a lasting legacy, shaping the Chinese state and society for centuries. Through these pivotal dynasties, Ancient Chinese history witnessed the development of a rich and enduring civilization, with contributions that continue to influence the world today.
