Spectacular Four-Season Interest

Hameln Fountain Grass delivers outstanding garden interest across all four seasons:

  • Spring: Fresh green arching blades emerge, forming graceful spreading clumps
  • Summer: Lush medium to deep green narrow foliage (to 1/2" wide); showy flower spikes begin emerging in late summer
  • Fall: Foliage transitions to brilliant golden yellow; silvery-pinkish plumes mature and turn brownish as seeds form
  • Winter: Attractive beige foliage and persistent seed heads remain through late fall and early winter, providing structure and bird food

Showy Plumed Flower Spikes

The signature feature of Hameln is its spectacular bottle brush-like flower spikes:

  • Silvery to pinkish-white bristly plumes arch outward from the clump
  • Resemble water spraying from a fountain (hence the common name)
  • Shorter and more compact than the species - proportional to the plant's size
  • Bloom from August through October for extended late-season interest
  • Turn brownish as seeds form; persist until late fall or early winter
  • Excellent for fresh cut flower arrangements
  • Outstanding for dried flower arrangements and wreaths

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun is best; tolerates part shade but may not flower well in too much shade
  • Soil: Average, medium to wet soils; adaptable to a wide range of soil types
  • Water: Medium moisture preferred; drought tolerant once established
  • Warm Season Grass: Emerges later in spring than cool-season grasses; best growth in summer heat
  • Zone 5 Note: May not be reliably winter hardy throughout Zone 5; best sited in a protected location

How to Plant & Care for Hameln Fountain Grass

  1. When to Plant: Spring after last frost for best establishment
  2. Site Selection: Choose a full sun location with average to moist, well-drained soil
  3. Spacing: Space plants 24-30 inches apart for individual specimens; 18-24 inches for mass plantings
  4. Planting Depth: Plant at the same depth as the nursery container
  5. Watering: Water thoroughly at planting; keep moist during establishment; reduce once established
  6. Fertilizing: Minimal fertilizer needed; apply balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring if desired
  7. Winter Care: Leave foliage standing through winter for interest and wildlife benefit
  8. Spring Cutback: Cut foliage to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear (typically February-March)
  9. Division: Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigor

Exceptional Tolerances

  • Drought: Excellent drought tolerance once established
  • Erosion: Deep fibrous roots stabilize slopes and banks effectively
  • Wet Soil: Tolerates moist to wet conditions; suitable for rain gardens and pond margins
  • Black Walnut: One of the few ornamental grasses tolerant of black walnut toxicity (juglone)
  • Air Pollution: Tolerates urban air pollution - excellent for city gardens
  • Pests & Disease: No serious insect or disease problems

Attracts Birds & Wildlife

Hameln Fountain Grass is a valuable wildlife plant:

  • Seed heads attract finches, sparrows, and other seed-eating birds in fall and winter
  • Dense clumps provide shelter and nesting habitat for small birds
  • Supports beneficial insects throughout the growing season

Ideal Garden Uses

  • Specimen Plant: Stunning solo accent in borders and landscape beds
  • Mass Plantings: Group for dramatic sweeping effect in large areas
  • Mixed Borders: Excellent texture and contrast among perennials and shrubs
  • Container Gardens: Outstanding in large pots for patios and decks
  • Rain Gardens: Tolerates wet conditions in low-lying areas
  • Pond & Stream Margins: Thrives in moist areas near water features
  • Erosion Control: Excellent for slopes, banks, and hillsides
  • Foundation Plantings: Provides texture and seasonal interest near structures
  • Cut Flower Gardens: Harvest plumes for fresh and dried arrangements

Companion Plants

Hameln Fountain Grass pairs beautifully with:

  • Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia): Classic late-summer combination of golden flowers and pinkish plumes
  • Coneflowers (Echinacea): Purple cones contrast beautifully with silvery plumes
  • Sedum 'Autumn Joy': Complementary fall interest with pink flower heads
  • Russian Sage (Perovskia): Blue-purple spikes alongside pinkish-white plumes
  • Ornamental Kale: Fall color combination in borders
  • Asters: Late-season purple or pink flowers alongside fountain grass plumes

About Pennisetum alopecuroides

Pennisetum alopecuroides, commonly called fountain grass, is a warm-season ornamental grass native to Asia and Australia. The genus name comes from the Latin penna meaning "feather" and seta meaning "bristle" - a reference to the flowers' long, feathery bristles. The specific epithet alopecuroides means "like a foxtail grass." 'Hameln' is a compact cultivar similar to the species but with shorter flower spikes and a more compact, well-proportioned habit - making it ideal for smaller gardens and mixed borders.

New formula
Size: 1.6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: New and Improved Formula!
I love the original aqua cream but it seems they have changed the formula and it is a much thinner, more liquidy product. The scent has also changed, though it’s fairly neutral, and it now comes in a smaller glass container compared to the original plastic.

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.

No Scent and Gentle
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I broke out in a case of Perioral Dermatitis recently and bought this product to help before I could see my doctor. Avene Tolerance facial cleanser has no scent and is very gentle on my skin. It didn’t burn when washing with this product, and even helped to slough off the dead skin around my lips. My face feels clean, not dry. I am still going to see my doc to get an RX for the inflammation, but I do believe this product helped to alleviate the dryness and tightness of my skin and lips. I’ve used other Avene products and I’m very happy with them. Even though these products are more expensive, to me they are well worth the money because they are much more gentle on the skin than any other products I’ve used. I will buy this product again just because of the fact that it’s so gentle. PS: at the time of purchase for this product, I also bought Avene’s Tolerance Control Skin Recovery Cream (you don’t need to use a lot of this one on your entire face), and Avene’s Cicalfate for lips. Between these 3 products, my lips and skin feel a lot better (however, I will still see my doctor because I have Crohn’s Disease and Perioral Dermatitis is considered an extra-intestinal side effect of Crohn’s).

Gentle everyday cleanser!
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
My go to nightly cleanser! Gentle yet effective. Removes makeup without leaving any residue behind. Also does not dry out my skin or cause breakouts! I would say it’s more of a cream cleanser though. It does not really foam up. It’s a decent size bottle for the price. The pump dispenser is an added plus!

So gentle and moisturizing. Great for super sensitive skin.
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
This is so gentle and moisturizing. Does not irritate my skin in any way. My skin is super sensitive and I have atopic dermatitis, it has been the best cleanser I’ve used to date. I was using another one from this brand and it was fine but this is the one I will continually stick with from now on. Just hope they don’t change the formula.
