Kawakawa (Piper excelsum) is a New Zealand native shrub with heart-shaped, aromatic leaves and cultural significance in traditional Māori medicine. It thrives in shaded, moist environments with well-draining soil and grows well under a forest canopy or in sheltered garden spaces.
Reaching 2–3 meters in height, Kawakawa produces leaves with a distinctive peppery flavour, often used in teas, balms, and poultices for their soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Female plants also produce small orange fruit, which are edible when ripe.
Prefers part to full shade and protection from harsh wind and frost. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while young. Prune to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushiness.
Sold in a 10 cm pot (similar to one in photo). Suitable for native gardens, edible landscapes, or container growing in sheltered spots.
