This variety thrives in USDA zones 3-11 depending on your climate, and adapts beautifully to indoor and outdoor growing. Start from seed for the most rewarding gardening experience — there is nothing quite like nurturing a plant from its very first sprout.

🌱 Step-by-Step Growing Guide

1. Seed Prep and Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outside after the last frost date. Some flower seeds benefit from a light overnight soak.

2. Planting and Container Setup: Full sun (6+ hours daily) for best blooming. Works beautifully in containers, window boxes, borders, and raised beds. Use well-draining, moderately fertile soil.

3. Germination and Early Care: Germination typically takes 7-21 days at 65-75F. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Light may help germination for some species.

4. Growth and Maintenance: Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a bloom-boosting fertilizer. Provide support for taller varieties.

5. Harvesting: Cut flowers in early morning for the longest vase life. Regular cutting encourages more blooms. Allow some flowers to go to seed for next year's garden.

💡 Pro Tips for Every State

  • Midwest and Northeast: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost for blooms by early summer. Succession sow for continuous color.
  • South and Southwest: Direct sow in early spring for quick establsihment. Many varieties self-seed for years of free flowers.
  • Container and Balcony Growers: Window boxes and railing planters create stunning displays. Mix heights and colors for maximum visual impact.

🍳 Easy Recipes and Creative Uses

  • Fresh-Cut Arrangements: Cut flowers in the morning and arrange in vases throughout your home for stunning natural beauty
  • Dried Flower Crafts: Hang-dry blooms for wreaths, pressed flower art, potpourri, and long-lasting decorative arrangements
  • Pollinator Paradise: Attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to your garden — essential for healthy ecosystems and food gardens

📋 Care and Storage

  • Store unused seeds in a cool, dry place — sealed container in the fridge extends viability 2-3+ years
  • Water consistently — morning watering prevents fungal issues and keeps plants hydrated through the day
  • Mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature
  • Check your USDA hardiness zone at planting time for the best results in your specific region

🧺 Harvesting & Post-Harvest Storage

Timing your harvest correctly maximizes flavor, nutrition, and shelf life. Most leafy greens reach peak quality when harvested in the cool morning hours after dew has evaporated but before afternoon heat causes wilting. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make precise cuts that heal quickly and reduce disease entry points. For root vegetables, wait until foliage begins to yellow and die back naturally before gently loosening soil with a garden fork. Store harvested produce properly: leafy greens wrapped in damp paper towels inside perforated bags maintain crispness for 7-10 days in the refrigerator crisper drawer at 35-40°F. Root vegetables store best in cool, dark, humid conditions (32-40°F, 90-95% humidity) and can last 3-6 months when properly cured. Preserve surplus harvest through dehydrating, freezing, or fermentation for year-round enjoyment.

Advanced Soil Science and Companion Planting

Understanding Your Soil: The foundation of every successful garden begins beneath the surface. Before planting, test your soil pH using an inexpensive kit from any garden center. Most seeds thrive in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0). If your soil is too acidic, add agricultural lime; if too alkaline, add sulfur or peat moss. The ideal soil structure is loamy — a balanced mix of sand, silt, and clay that retains moisture while allowing good drainage.

Building Living Soil: Healthy soil is a living ecosystem containing billions of microorganisms per teaspoon. Feed your soil with aged compost, worm castings, and mycorrhizal fungi inoculant. These beneficial organisms form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, extending their effective root zone by up to 700% and making locked-up nutrients bioavailable. Avoid synthetic fertilizers that can disrupt this delicate microbial balance.

Companion Planting Strategies: Strategic plant pairings can dramatically improve growth, pest resistance, and flavor. Plant aromatic herbs like basil, dill, and cilantro nearby to attract beneficial pollinators and repel harmful insects through volatile oil release. Marigolds are excellent border plants that deter nematodes and aphids. Avoid planting near allelopathic species like black walnut, which release juglone into the soil.

Mulching for Success: Apply 2-3 inches of organic mulch (straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips) around established seedlings. Mulch regulates soil temperature, conserves moisture by up to 70%, suppresses weeds, and gradually feeds the soil as it decomposes. Leave a small gap around stems to prevent collar rot.

Beauty as an assassin? Yes, please.
Format: Kindle
I am a sucker for Beauty and the Beast retellings, especially when there is fae magic involved. This story is a stand-alone and can easily be read and enjoyed as such, but the story in the background is waiting to unfold. Briannis is a lost woman trying to find her place in the world. She happens to be an excellent assassin, but only when there is a good reason behind the job. She runs afoul of the law and is coerced into killing the King of Fae. Their tale begins with much violence and mistrust. They reach an understanding that turns into more as they are stuck inside the Keep thanks to the murderous roses encasing the building. Some of my favorite quotes "This is not very..." "Proper?" His low drawl curled around her guts, sweet and syrupy. "I thought you'd realise by now that I'm far from a proper man, Miss Iavi." She swallowed hard. "You're... you're not making sense. You don't even like me." "I don't?" he said dryly. "I tried to kill you! Three times in a row!" "You may want to leave," he added, barely even moving his lips. His voice was low and raspy, little more than a growl; the words came out with laboured breaths. "Before I no longer let you." "You can’t just act like you didn’t have your fingers inside me a few hours ago! That’s not something you talk about over strawberries!" He took a sip of tea. "You’ve had your knife inside me too." "That," she said exasperatedly, "is something extremely different." "In the sense that I’d be happy to repeat one incident and not the other, yes." He smiled at her over his teacup, shameless... "You make a terrible king out of me, Briannis Iavi." "Are you very sure? There’s no need to be polite if you—" "I’m not being polite!" A trembling laugh escaped her. "I have no intention at all of being polite to you!"

Love how this author writes, BUT..
Format: Kindle
I wanted to love everything about this book. I had this book release on my calendar. I read it the moment it became available. I’ve become a big fan after Marshall’s Blood and Bindings series, and I think she does a beautiful job writing complex, thoughtful characters. BUT. Spoilers below- This book missed the mark in two important ways for me. The first is the intro - this “very proper lady assassin” - first of all - we are supposed to believe that SHE is who the most powerful man in the city chose to assassinate his mortal enemy? Sure. She had killed some unsuspecting guys. But the leap from there to a Fae king with magic? And when she goes to do it- she does it by blindly bumbling around his castle and walking into the room where he is and trying to stab him in the middle of the day? I am willing suspend a lot of disbelief for a good story, but that was a major stretch that made the whole premise of the book feel contrived. And second… a whole dead side of his body? Like … dead. As in.. she smelled the rot. Saw the skeleton and dead mouth and skin. And then … had sex with it? Um. I’m no prude but … yuck. I couldn’t get past the necrophiliac imagery and visual, and it was a major turn off for me.

Fantasy Romance
Format: Kindle
✨’Would it truly be that bad?' he muttered, and for the first time since she'd awoken, there was a hint of humanity in his quiet words, a crack in that jaundiced shield. Warm breath brushed past her scalp. His arms didn't let go. 'If you ended up here with no way to leave?' ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Fantasy Romance 📖 🥀Oh, these moment with our MMC reach deep for me and make me love him all the more! Curse Of The Thorn King is @authorlisettemarshall’s new and utterly enchanting Beauty and the Beast retelling, and I absolutely loved it! This steamy, forced proximity, enemies to lovers story is the first installment in the new Wayfarer Fae series and I fell hard for these characters! ✨I thoroughly enjoyed the unique flower magic systems, the assassin plot, all of fun additions of Lady Lockwell's Handbook of Etiquette, and how that factored into the story. The flirtatious and stabby banter between the two main characters had me grinning like a complete fool as the romance developed….all while experiencing the moments that made my heart ache and even break for our MC’s as the plot unfolded. 🥀As I read Curse of the Thorn King I was consumed by that quintessential balance of angst, tension, steam, COMPLETE frustration (in the best way) emotional turmoil, and swoon worthy moments that my heart has come to associate with the magic of Lisette Marshall’s writing. This authors always makes me feel allll the feels ✨✨It is no surprise that I intimately drawn to these characters and their story. ✨I highly recommend Curse Of The Thorn King to fantasy, fantasy romance, and romantasy readers.

5 ⭐️ / 2.5-3 🌶️
Format: Paperback
I do not know where my original review went so I’m reposting Includes: - Beauty and the Beast vibes, but with a Fae twist - Enemies to lovers - Slow burn - Forced proximity - Standalone HEA There are now two books I love that have opening sentences that reference bars of soap. @authorlisettemarshall ‘s books never disappoint me and this standalone is no exception. I absolutely love her writing style, the unique magic systems she uses, as well as her ability to convey such vivid details regarding things like clothing and places. It really helps someone like me (who isn't a good visualizer) immerse myself in the story. It also MUST be said that Lisette has really mastered the art of writing the slow burn for me. With fun characters and banter, she sprinkles in little breadcrumbs here and there that help with the romance build up and, baby, I'm hot on those breadcrumbs' trails just EATING them up. TLDR; Put this on your TBR.
