Winter Mahogany Stonecrop (Sedum floriferum 'Winter Mahogany')

Winter Mahogany Stonecrop is a low, spreading groundcover that brings reliable coverage and strong seasonal color to sunny, well-drained spaces. It forms a tight mat of succulent foliage that stays neat along edges, between stones, and in rock and gravel plantings. Summer foliage reads fresh green, then shifts to rich mahogany-red tones as temperatures cool for extended fall and winter interest. Once established, it handles heat, lean soils, and short dry spells with minimal upkeep.

Distinctive Features

This stonecrop is valued for its seasonal foliage shift, moving from shiny green in summer to deep red-mahogany in fall and winter for a dramatic color change. The habit is mat-forming and trailing, with creeping stems that root as they spread to create uniform coverage. In early to mid summer, clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers rise just above the foliage and attract pollinators. The combination of durable groundcover performance and winter color makes it especially useful in tough, exposed sites.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun for best color and dense growth, with light shade tolerated.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, especially sandy, gravelly, or rocky sites.
  • Water: Water to establish, then provide low to average water, allowing soil to dry between waterings.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 9.
  • Mature Size: Typically grows 3 to 4 inches tall and spreads 10 to 12 inches wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a broad patch as a low focal point where the mahogany winter foliage can pop against stone, gravel, or evergreen backdrops.
  • Groundcover: Mass plant to form a dense mat that fills gaps and helps suppress weeds in sunny beds.
  • Rock and Gravel Gardens: Tuck into fast-draining sites where drought tolerance and clean texture matter.
  • Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a crisp, low border that stays neat with minimal trimming.
  • Walls and Slopes: Plant along dry banks or stone edges so it can trail slightly and soften hard lines.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Shear lightly after flowering or in early spring to refresh growth and keep the mat dense.
  • Fertilizing: Avoid heavy feeding, because lean soils help maintain compact growth and better color.
  • Watering: Once established, water only during extended drought, because frequent irrigation can weaken stonecrop performance.
  • Drainage: Improve heavy soils with grit or raised areas to keep crowns from staying wet.
  • Propagation: Expand plantings easily by re-rooting small stem pieces or dividing sections in spring.

Why Choose Winter Mahogany Stonecrop?

  • Winter Color: Foliage shifts to rich mahogany-red tones for standout fall and winter interest.
  • Tough Coverage: Mat-forming, trailing growth fills gaps neatly in sunny, well-drained sites.
  • Summer Flowers: Yellow blooms add a bright seasonal accent and support pollinators.
  • Waterwise Performance: Succulent growth handles heat and short dry spells well once established.
  • Low Upkeep: Minimal pruning and simple cultural needs keep maintenance straightforward.

Winter Mahogany Stonecrop is an easy way to add dependable coverage and a strong seasonal color shift to sunny, fast-draining areas. Pair it with blue-toned succulents, ornamental grasses, or darker foliage plants to make the mahogany tones stand out. With sun and sharp drainage, it stays compact, resilient, and consistently attractive year after year.

Waste of Money
Color: Dark Gray, Size: 3 Panel "L"
Don't think you are getting a professional divider. These things are pressed cardboard, they rattle and they have no sound reduction. I would return if it wasn't such a pain to dis assemble and repackage. We bought three for our office, but the other two will immediately be returned on Monday.....WASTE of time and money.

Heavy and bit of a pain to put together
Color: Dark Gray, Size: 2 Panel "I"
This unit is better for an industrial or business setting. It's rather cumbersome and awkward to assemble. Needs to be kept stationary after putting it together, was not easy to move around once it was up.

Highly Customizable Modular Wall System
Color: Dark Gray, Size: 2 Panel "I"
The VIVO Modular Wall System is sturdy and easy to assemble. The semi-lightweight panels slide in and out of the modular frame. The panels are made of very strong and thick panels that provide a simple, good-looking room barrier. The dark grey tone of the privacy panels looks good with a multitude of interior decors. This product is suitable for commercial applications, but it can also be used for home use. I tested this product and installed it in my computer lab to create a private computer corner. I work better by having a cubicle area that is free from distractions. The VIVO modular wall system effectively gives me "blinders" so that the rest of my work area is not a distraction anymore.

This Modular Wall System is very nice!
Color: Dark Gray, Size: 2 Panel "I"
This VIVO Modular Wall System, 2 PET Panels, Modern Professional Office Cubicle Dividers, is very nice! It is super easy to set up and individually, they are not too heavy, yet heavy enough to not be knocked over easily. They are very versatile in the way you want to use them. Personally, I want to set a divider for my recording space, and my desk/work space for better efficiency when doing one or the other. It’s also great if you need a backdrop if you do any type of video recording. Beautifully designed wall systems, thanks!
