A low, creeping Aloe from the arid coastal dunes of Namaqualand, South Africa. Also known as the Sand Aloe. It forms trailing stems that can extend several feet, rooting where they touch the soil. Leaves are narrow, blue-green, and densely marked with pale spots; under strong light or drought they take on reddish tones. Margins are finely toothed. In habitat it grows in deep sand, relying more on coastal fog and dew than rainfall — a clue to its preference for fast-draining soil and moderate watering in cultivation.
In summer, mature plants produce slender, upright inflorescences with tubular orange to coral-red flowers, often several branches per stem. These contrast attractively with the glaucous foliage and tend to draw hummingbirds in mild climates. Growth slows in cold or wet conditions, but the plant is surprisingly tolerant of brief light frost, reportedly down to about 22 °F according to San Marcos Growers. Aloe arenicola is best suited for USDA zones 9b – 11.
Best suited to containers, rock gardens, or dry slopes where its trailing habit can be appreciated. Performs well in coastal conditions and can be mixed with other small Aloes for contrast. Requires full sun to bright light and very sharp drainage — a sandy or pumice-amended mix replicates its native substrate. Overwatering, particularly in cool weather, is the main risk.
