Anubias Nana Petite Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How Big Does Anubias Petite Get?

Anubias Petite, scientifically known as Anubias sp. 'Petite', is a compact aquatic plant that grows to less than 5 cm (2 inches) in height. Its small leaves emerge from a rhizome that can extend 5–10 cm or more, making it ideal for nano aquariums and detailed aquascaping. This mutation, discovered at the Oriental aquarium plant nursery in Singapore, is perfect for creating lush, low-maintenance underwater landscapes. Its petite size and slow growth rate make it a favorite for tanks with live aquarium plants.

Does Anubias Nana Petite Need CO₂?

Anubias Nana Petite thrives without CO₂, making it an excellent choice for low-tech aquariums. It grows well when its rhizome is attached to hard surfaces like driftwood or stones and requires low to medium light. While CO₂ is not essential, adding it can encourage faster growth and thicker, more vibrant leaves. Pairing CO₂ with regular fertilization enhances its appearance, especially in tanks with live aquarium plants.

What is the Difference Between Anubias Nana and Anubias Nana Petite?

The primary difference lies in the leaf size and growth habits. Anubias Nana typically has leaves about ¾ inch (1.9 cm) in diameter, even in low-light, low-CO₂ conditions. In contrast, Anubias Nana Petite features much smaller leaves, barely reaching ⅓ inch (0.8 cm) in diameter, making it more compact and ideal for nano aquariums or intricate aquascapes. Both are hardy and thrive in similar conditions, but Nana Petite is better suited for creating detailed, small-scale underwater designs with live aquarium plants.

  • Perfect for Aquarium Beginners: Requires minimal care and thrives in low-light conditions.

Key features and characteristics of Anubias Nana Petite

1. Size: Compact and Versatile

Anubias Nana Petite is known for its diminutive size, making it one of the most sought-after plants for aquascapes. The average height of this live aquarium plant ranges from 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5 cm), while its leaves span around 0.5 to 1 inch (1.2 to 2.5 cm) in length. This compact nature makes it:

  • Perfect for nano aquariums, where space is limited.

  • A stunning foreground plant in larger aquarium tanks, adding a lush and intricate texture to your aquascape.

  • Ideal for creating intricate designs, such as carpeting or accenting hardscapes like aquarium stone and driftwood.

2. Growth Rate: Slow and Steady Aquarium Plant

Unlike fast-growing plants that require frequent pruning, Anubias Nana Petite grows at a leisurely pace. Its slow growth means:

  • Less maintenance, as trimming is rarely needed.

  • It retains its shape and size for longer periods, making it a great choice for aquascaping enthusiasts who value stability in their designs.

  • Over time, it develops a dense and bushy appearance, which enhances the natural aesthetics of the freshwater aquarium.

3. Aquarium Lighting: Adaptable to Low and Moderate Light

Anubias Nana Petite thrives under low to moderate light conditions, which makes it:

  • Perfect for aquarium tanks with minimal lighting setups or tanks designed for shaded environments.

  • A resilient choice for hobbyists who struggle with algae growth, as excess aquarium light often promotes algae in your tanks.

  • Compatible with planted aquariums that use a variety of light sources, including aquarium LED and fluorescent lights.

4. Durability: Built to Last

Anubias Nana Petite is one of the most hardy and resilient aquatic plants, capable of withstanding various conditions. Its durability includes:

  • Resistance to algae: When placed in optimal lighting and water conditions, its thick leaves are less likely to be overrun by algae.

  • Tolerant of a wide range of water parameters: It adapts well to pH levels between 6.5 and 7.5 and temperatures ranging from 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C).

  • Longevity: This aquarium plant can thrive for years with proper care, making it a cost-effective choice for long-term aquascaping projects.

Benefits of using Anubias Nana Petite in your aquarium

1. Improved Ecosystem: Enhancing Water Quality and Supporting Aquatic Life

Anubias Nana Petite plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and balanced aquarium ecosystem. Like other live plants in fish tanks, it provides several ecological benefits:

  • Oxygenation: The broad, durable leaves of Anubias Nana Petite help to oxygenate the water by releasing oxygen during photosynthesis. This supports the respiratory needs of live freshwater fish and other aquatic creatures, creating a healthier environment.

  • Nutrient Absorption: It absorbs excess nutrients from the water, such as nitrates and phosphates, which helps to reduce the likelihood of algae outbreaks and maintain better water quality.

  • Biological Stability: The live plant contributes to the stability of the tank’s nitrogen cycle by harboring beneficial bacteria on its surfaces, aiding in the breakdown of waste.

2. Hiding Spots for Freshwater Fish: Providing Comfort and Security

The dense foliage and compact size of Anubias Nana Petite make it an ideal refuge for your fish, particularly shy or vulnerable species:

  • Shelter for Small Fish: Its lush leaves provide safe hiding spots for fry (baby fish) and small fish, protecting them from potential predators.

  • Comfort for Shy Species: Timid fish, such as bettas or small tetras, often seek shelter among live plants like Anubias Nana Petite to feel secure and reduce stress.

  • Support for Bottom-Dwellers: Placing this aquatic plant near the aquarium substrate can offer bottom-dwelling fish, such as corydoras and loaches, a place to rest or forage comfortably.

3. Aesthetic Versatility: Perfect for All Aquascaping Ideas

Anubias Nana Petite is highly adaptable and can enhance the visual appeal of any aquarium landscape:

  • Natural Vibes: Its deep green color and compact growth add a natural and soothing ambiance to the planted tank, making it ideal for biotope or jungle-style aquascapes.

  • Minimalist Designs: It complements modern, minimalist setups by providing subtle elegance without overpowering the layout.

  • Versatility in Placement: The aquatic plant can be attached to rocks, driftwood, or placed near other hardscapes, allowing aquascapers to create layers and depth in their designs.

  • Compatibility with Other Plants: Anubias Nana Petite pairs beautifully with other live aquatic plants, such as Java Fernmosses, or Cryptocoryne, to create a harmonious and vibrant underwater garden.

Tank Setup for Anubias Nana Petite: Tips for Optimal Growth and Appearance

Creating the ideal environment for Anubias Nana Petite ensures its health, longevity, and visual appeal in your aquarium. Here’s how to set up your tank for this hardy aquatic plant:

1. Aquarium Substrate: No Rooting Required

Anubias Nana Petite is unique in that it doesn’t need to be rooted in the aquarium substrate. Instead:

  • Attach to Hardscapes: Secure the aquatic plant to rocks, driftwood, or other aquarium decorations using aquarium-safe glue or fishing line.

  • Prevent Rhizome Rot: Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can lead to rot and damage to the aquatic plant.

  • Placement Flexibility: Position it at various heights and angles to add depth and creativity to your aquascape.

2. Water Parameters: Maintaining the Right Conditions

This live plant thrives in stable water conditions that mimic its natural habitat:

  • pH Range: Maintain a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.5 and 7.5 for optimal health.

  • Temperature: Keep the water temperature in the range of 72°F-82°F (22°C-28°C), suitable for most tropical aquariums.

  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal, ensuring nutrients reach the live plant without dislodging it from its anchor.

  • Compatibility: It pairs well with tanks hosting community fish or freshwater shrimp, as these inhabitants do not harm the live plant.

3. Pairing with Other Live Aquarium Plants

For those creating live plant tanks, Anubias Nana Petite complements a wide variety of species:

  • Java Fern and Mosses: Similar care requirements make these excellent companions.

  • Foreground and Background Plants: Use Anubias Nana Petite as a foreground plant while combining it with taller species like Amazon Swords or Vallisneria for contrast.

  • Shrimp Tanks: Its durable leaves provide a great grazing surface for algae-eating shrimp.

Care Tips and Propagation for Anubias Nana Petite

Caring for Anubias Nana Petite is straightforward, making it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Here’s how to ensure its health and propagate it successfully:

1. Attach and Anchor

Anubias Nana Petite thrives when securely attached to hard surfaces in your tank:

  • Materials to Use: Use fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue to fasten the plant to rocks, driftwood, or other aquarium decorations.

  • Placement Options: Position it creatively in your aquascape, such as on elevated hardscapes for vertical layers or flat surfaces for carpeting effects.

  • Secure the Aquatic Plant: Ensure it is firmly anchored so it doesn’t get dislodged by water flow or fish activity.

2. Avoid Burying the Rhizome

The rhizome is the heart of Anubias Nana Petite, and proper placement is critical:

  • Above the Aquarium Substrate: Always position the rhizome above the substrate to prevent it from rotting.

  • Root Growth: The roots will naturally grow downward into the substrate or cling to hardscapes for stability.

  • Substrate-Free Setup: This aquatic plant thrives even in substrate-free tanks, making it versatile for various setups.

3. Propagate Easily

Propagating Anubias Nana Petite is simple and can help you expand your aquascape:

  • Rhizome Division: Use a sharp, sterilized tool to cut the rhizome into smaller sections, ensuring each piece has at least 2-3 healthy leaves and visible roots.

  • Reattach New Sections: Secure the new pieces to hardscapes, just as you would with the original aquatic plant.

  • Growth Timeline: Propagated sections will grow slowly, but with proper care, they will develop into healthy, full-sized plants.

Additional Care Tips

  • Cleaning: Gently clean the leaves if algae build-up occurs to maintain the plant’s appearance and health.

  • Pruning: Trim damaged or yellowing leaves to encourage new growth.

  • Compatibility: Avoid housing Anubias Nana Petite with herbivorous fish that may nibble on its leaves, such as goldfish or large cichlids.

Common Issues and Solutions for Anubias Nana Petite

Although Anubias Nana Petite is a hardy and low-maintenance plant, it can encounter a few common issues. Here’s a detailed look at these problems and how to address them effectively:

1. Algae Growth

Issue: The broad leaves of Anubias Nana Petite can become a target for algae, especially under strong or prolonged lighting.

Solutions:

  • Lighting Duration: Limit the light exposure to 6–8 hours per day to reduce algae growth. Avoid high-intensity lights directly focused on the plant.

  • Nutrient Balance: Maintain balanced nutrient levels by monitoring nitrates and phosphates. Avoid over-fertilization, which can promote algae.

  • Algae-Eating Tank Mates: Introduce algae-eating species such as Amano shrimp, Nerite snails, or Otocinclus catfish to help control algae naturally.

  • Manual Cleaning: Gently clean the leaves with a soft brush or sponge to remove algae buildup without damaging the live aquarium plant.

2. Melting Leaves

Issue: "Melting" refers to the live aquarium plant’s leaves turning translucent, wilting, and eventually falling off. This can happen due to sudden changes in water parameters or stress from a new environment.

Solutions:

  • Gradual Acclimation: When introducing the live plant to a new tank, acclimate it slowly to the water parameters to minimize stress.

  • Consistent Water Quality: Maintain stable water conditions, including a pH of 6.5–7.5 and a temperature of 72°F–82°F (22°C–28°C). Avoid sudden changes in these parameters.

  • Remove Damaged Leaves: Trim melting leaves promptly to encourage the growth of healthy new ones.

  • Nutrient Deficiency: If melting persists, consider adding a liquid fertilizer specifically designed for aquatic plants to ensure proper nutrition.

3. Root Rot

Issue: Root rot occurs when the rhizome is buried in the substrate, leading to decay and eventual death of the plant.

Solutions:

  • Proper Placement: Always position the rhizome above the substrate. Attach it to rocks, driftwood, or other hardscapes for stability.

  • Inspect Regularly: Check the rhizome periodically for signs of rot, such as a soft or discolored appearance, and remove affected sections immediately.

  • Moderate Water Flow: Ensure good water circulation around the live plant to prevent stagnant conditions that could contribute to rot.

Good Variety Pack With Solid Compatibility, But No Protective Caps
This is a review for this 21-piece variety pack of Dr. Pen microneedling cartridges. For around $32, this actually feels like a pretty solid value overall. You’re getting seven nano cartridges, seven 12-pin, and seven 36-pin, so it’s a nice mix depending on whether you’re doing product infusion, lighter treatments, or more intensive microneedling sessions. I always appreciate a variety pack because otherwise you end up buying giant boxes of one type and suddenly becoming emotionally committed to 36-pin needles for the next six years. These fit my Dr. Pen M7/M7S perfectly with no issues clicking into place or staying secure during use. I didn’t have any wobbling, uneven dragging, or weird skipping while microneedling. Functionally, they performed just as well as other replacement cartridges I’ve used. That said, they do look and feel a little cheaper than some other cartridges I’ve purchased before. Not necessarily unusable, just not quite as sturdy or polished-looking. Since these are single-use anyway, that may not matter to everyone, but it was noticeable. My biggest hesitation is that these do not come with protective caps over the needles. To be fair, the listing photos actually do show them packaged this way, so it’s not misleading — they were honest about it — but personally I’m just more comfortable when cartridges have caps for an added sense of sterility and protection. They are individually vacuum sealed with expiration dates, which I do appreciate, but I’ll probably use my capped cartridges first before reaching for these. Because of that, I’d feel a little more comfortable initially using these on areas like the chest or neck rather than jumping straight into facial treatments, at least until I’ve tested them more thoroughly. I’d also definitely be extra cautious about sanitizing everything beforehand. Overall though, for the quantity and variety included, this still feels like a decent buy if you go through cartridges regularly.

Awesome versatility, affordable, easy to use micro needles for compatible Dr. Pen devices 🫶🏽💉🤩⭐️
This microneedling cartridge refill set is a pretty great value with a convenient mix of multiple needle options. It’s super versatile and should easily meet all your microneedling skincare needs. The cartridges fit securely with compatible Dr. Pen models (mine is 7). MAKE SURE YOURS FITS!! Some devices THREAD, others DO NOT!! This is super important b/c if you don’t have the correct type, there’s nothing you can do to make them work! These refills allow for easy and effective operation without causing skin snagging, tears, or injury (other than ‘micro injury,’ which is what’s intended by the whole concept of Microneedling!). The individually sealed cartridges are sanitary, convenient for travel, and are an excellent choice for any microneedling skincare regimen. While the plastic housing/casing feels somewhat lightweight, the kit’s performance is actually top notch. I do wish they had protective caps for even more superior protection, but it’s a great deal and I can’t complain for the price. It’s a total no-brainer if you have a compatible Dr. Pen Microneedling device.

Fit My Dr Pen M7 Correctly, But Check Packaging Carefully Before Use
I purchased these replacement cartridges for my Dr Pen M7, and the fit was fine with no compatibility issues. They attached properly and worked as expected during use, so at least from a fit/function standpoint, they seem pretty standard. I also appreciate that the pack includes a variety of cartridge types and needle/pin counts instead of only one style. Having different options is useful depending on the area being treated and personal preference. One thing I did notice though is that the cartridges arrived in Dr Pen branded packaging, and I honestly wasn’t completely sure about the legitimacy/authenticity of them. They may very well be genuine, but it did make me pause a little since there wasn’t much additional verification information included. My biggest concern was that although the packages are labeled sterile, I noticed some type of brown residue/spotting inside one of the sealed cartridge packages. It appeared in multiple spots inside that particular package, so I immediately decided to throw that cartridge away rather than risk using it. Because of that, I would strongly recommend inspecting each cartridge carefully before use and sterilizing again yourself for extra precaution. With microneedling products especially, cleanliness and safety matter a lot. Overall, the cartridges themselves fit and functioned properly with my device, and I like the variety included, but quality control/sterility is something I’d advise paying close attention to before using them.

Great replacement micro needling cartridges.
Picked today up for replacements for my Dr Pen micro needler. They arrived individually sealed, ready for use. They appear to be compatible good quality product just like my originals. Love the price point and savings. They fit my device perfectly. These arrived at the Dr Pen cartridge box although do not have Dr Pen brand on cartridges appear high-quality similar in packaging of the originals. They do not have the pen, cap safety guard, but that's really not a needed part of the product. Make sure to verify you have the right device. Be aware they do not fit correctly in M8 devices. Great value for the money you get 21 piece micro, needling cartridges, various needle styles. The kit comes with 36 needle, 12 needle and nano cartridges. I have already used the Nano cartridge and they are super comparable to original cartridges quality, They do not drag on the skin easily move and dispense face serum product. So far, I've been super happy with the replacements.

21 Piece Pen Cartridges
This 21 piece microneedling cartridge set is an excellent value and gives a lot of versatility for different skincare needs. I really like that it includes three different tip styles: nano, 12 pin, and 36 pin. There are 7 of each variety included, which makes it easy to customize treatments depending on what area I’m focusing on and how gentle or intensive I want the session to be. The cartridges fit my Dr Pen device well and feel securely attached during use. Everything came individually packaged and clean, which is important for at home microneedling routines. The nano tips are great for product infusion and glow-focused treatments, while the 12 and 36 pin options work well for more targeted skin texture care. Overall, this is a convenient and affordable replacement set that’s perfect for anyone wanting multiple cartridge options in one package.
