  •  The Variegated Schefflera, or Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a timeless favorite in the world of indoor gardening. Known for its charming "umbrella-like" leaf clusters and cheery splashes of cream and yellow, this plant offers a lush, tropical feel without the demanding maintenance of many other exotic species.

The hallmark of this plant is its palmate foliage - leaves that radiate from a central point like the ribs of an umbrella. In this variegated variety, the deep emerald green is broken up by irregular, "washed out" yellow and creamy gold patches. It is highly versatile; it can be pruned into a small bushy tabletop plant or trained into a tall, multi-stemmed indoor tree.

While it is an evergreen flowering shrub in its native habitat, the Variegated Schefflera rarely blooms indoors. In the wild, it produces small, inconspicuous greenish flowers on large branched tentacles, followed by tiny orange or red berries. As a houseplant, however, its stunning variegated foliage is the main attraction.

  • Bright, indirect light. Variegated versions need more light than solid green ones to maintain their color. If the light is too low, the new leaves may turn solid green.

Moderate. Allow the top half of the soil to dry out between waterings. It is relatively drought-tolerant but hates "wet feet" (sitting in water).

Rich, well-draining soil. A standard high-quality potting mix with a bit of perlite added for aeration is ideal.

60°F – 80°F (15°C - 27°C). Keep it away from cold drafts or air conditioning vents.

  • 10 - 12 (Grown as a landscape shrub in tropical climates).

Very good book with a few minor flaws
Format: Hardcover
As most books published under the DK banner, this is a visually excellent book that is a pleasure to look at. It is well written and chock-full of outstanding illustrations and maps. I do have a few minor "ding" though. First, I think that the book should have included a "why" the battle changed history. While in most cases, this rationale is included in the text, in a few cases one has to wonder "why" this battle was important; for example, they chose the World War I battle of Verdun, but they also said that the battle was "inconclusive"; if so, how did it change history? Second, I have to question the choice of some of the battles. For example, the editors list "Arnhem", which ended up as a costly allied failure, but fail to mention the wildly successful Soviet "Operation Bagration", which destroyed the German Army Group Center. Third, there were some minor factual inaccuracies. The battles of Passchendaele and Dunkirk were both shown on a map as being located in Northern Italy instead of northern France, while Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of France, was shown on a map as being more at Pas de Calais vice the beaches of Normandy. In spite of these nits, this is a good book worthy of belonging in you library. Four stars.
