Expected Height at Pickup: 2-3', 3 gal.

One of Indiana’s few showy clinging vines, with large, striking flowers that attract hummingbirds and sphinx moths! It blooms through most of the summer in ideal conditions, and is very hardy and fast growing once it gets its taproot down. This is a clinging vine, so won’t grow on a metal trellis: large polls, privacy fences, dead trees, and gazebos all make good support structures. Some have had success growing it up shorter posts and trimming it to achieve a bush shape. Blooms most prolifically in full sun, but is surprisingly tolerant of bright shade and can be crown up the trunks of living locust and walnut trees. Prone to runnering, so best planted in a woodland edge situation, or on a post/dead tree/gazebo that is mowed around.

Note that this is a big, long lived vine with a taproot so we do not recommend letting it grow up the wall of a house or shed. Check the photos for a picture of an old plant in a botanical garden that has completely consumed multiple gazebos!

Pollination: 2+ individuals needed.

Light: Full Sun, Part Sun/Shade

Soil Moisture: Wet Mesic, Mesic, Dry Mesic

Soil Type: Adaptable

Height: Up to 40’

Width: Up to 40’

Bloom Color: Orange

Bloom Time: Jun-Aug

Fruit: Seeds mature in long, cylindrical pods.

Fall Color: -

Root Type: Taproot

Notable Wildlife Interactions: Flowers attract hummingbirds, bumblebees, sphinx moths, and occasionally orioles. Extra-floral nectaries attract some ants, flies, and small bees. Hosts at least two moths and a leaf beetle. Rarely browsed by mammals. Dense growth and creeping habit makes excellent habitat for many songbirds.

Notes: Vines in flower can be spotted along roadsides and are still considered common, but, like so many other “common” species, their numbers have been vastly reduced in recent years due to the removal of fencerows and blanket usage of herbicide.

Perfect for my dog
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
My dog (16 lb) LOVES to whip her toys around and throw them in the air to chase after them. This is the perfect toy for her to play outside by herself. I would repurchase for her over and over again if needed!

Pup loves this!
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
My pup loves his soccer balls. These are very durable although if you have a dog that doesn't grasp the concept of using the loops/straps to carry it, teeth could puncture it. They are a good value for the money if your dog likes to chase the ball, I get the smaller size ball for my dog (medium dog). They come with a pump but if you have a bicycle pump or a battery operated pump, it will fill much faster. Ours stay outside and even in the winter, they hold up well, just need a bit more air occasionally to keep it pumped up.

Well that didn't last long!
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
He loved it for the 15 minutes it took to destroy it! Cute design, but the material was thin enough to penetrate with his teeth and it was all over in a very short time! He still carries the carcass around and tries to play with it...it's sad. Definitely not for strong chewers.

Decent ball
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
Context: I have a busy, anxious Corgi. I like that it came with a pump to air it up. My dog likes the tag feature on it which made the ball easy to carry. She chewed off the tags pretty quick. She didn’t like herding this one as much. She prefers herding a basketball over this ball. The ball sits in the backyard through all the weather and elements and has held up pretty well. We’ve had it about a year and it’s still a good toy.
