Alocasia 'Chocolate Green'

Alocasia 'Chocolate Green' is a dark-leaved Alocasia with glossy green blades that carry a warm chocolate-green cast. Reddish-brown petioles sit below the darker leaves, so both the blade surface and the stems add visible colour.

It grows as an upright, rhizomatous Alocasia with fleshy petioles rising from the base. Indoors it needs warmth, bright filtered light and a breathable root zone; dense wet substrate or an oversized pot can quickly show up as yellowing leaves or soft petiole bases.

Dark blades and chestnut petioles

  • Leaf colour: Glossy dark green foliage with a chocolate-green tone, especially on fresh, healthy leaves.
  • Petioles: Reddish-brown to chestnut-toned stems give clear contrast below the leaf blades.
  • Growth style: Upright clumping growth from a rhizomatous base, with each leaf held on a separate fleshy petiole.
  • Root zone: A pot close to the root-ball size keeps moisture easier to control around the rhizome.
  • Indoor setup: Warmth, filtered light and an airy substrate keep the root zone stable around the rhizome.

Root-zone balance for dark-leaved Alocasia

The dark leaves of Alocasia 'Chocolate Green' respond well to steady filtered light and a root zone that never stays stagnant. Fleshy petioles store water, so sudden collapse, a soft base or a sour smell from the substrate usually points to root or rhizome stress.

A chunky aroid mix gives the roots both moisture and oxygen. Bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice or similar coarse ingredients create small air spaces around the root system while still holding enough moisture for active growth.

Keeping Alocasia 'Chocolate Green' steady indoors

  • Light: Place in bright filtered light. Direct midday sun can scorch the glossy leaf surface, while very low light can stretch petioles and slow new leaf production.
  • Water: Water once the upper few centimetres of substrate have dried. Let excess water drain fully and keep cachepots empty.
  • Mix: Use a loose aroid mix with coarse mineral or bark-based structure. Fine, compact soil holds too much water around the rhizome.
  • Warmth: Keep warm, ideally around 18-28 °C. Cold windowsills and cold wet substrate can damage roots before the leaves show symptoms.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity reduces dry edges and helps new leaves open more evenly. A humidifier or plant cabinet gives steadier conditions than wetting the leaves.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced fertiliser. Flush the pot occasionally if mineral salts build up on the substrate surface.
  • Repotting: Move up only slightly in pot size when the root ball is established. A large wet pot around a small root system increases rot risk.
  • Pest watch: Inspect the undersides of leaves and the petiole bases for spider mites and thrips, especially in warm dry indoor air.

Problems to watch on Alocasia 'Chocolate Green'

  • Yellowing lower leaves: Often linked to overwatering, cold substrate or a root ball staying wet for too long.
  • Soft petiole bases: Check the rhizome and roots immediately; soft tissue at the base often means the root zone has stayed too wet.
  • Brown margins: Irregular watering, low humidity, fertiliser salts or dry heat can mark the leaf edge.
  • Fine speckling or webbing: Spider mites can build up quickly on glossy Alocasia leaves, especially when humidity is low.
  • Stalled growth: Cool roots, weak light or an exhausted root ball can pause new leaf production.

Safety for Alocasia 'Chocolate Green'

Alocasia 'Chocolate Green' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and small children, and avoid contact with sap on sensitive skin or eyes.

Botanical background

Alocasia belongs to the aroid family, Araceae. The genus name is connected to Colocasia, an older aroid name traced to the Greek word kolokasia.

I purchased this for our trip to Texas from Alabama with our 2 year old American bulldog in tow. I wanted something that was able to keep her secure, but something that would be comfortable for her. I was also concerned about sizing because even though she is a medium sized dog, she has a wide chest. I got an XL. It fit her perfectly with the adjustable straps, it was easy to get it on and off of her, she didn’t mind it at all, and the straps were strong enough to keep her safe and in place.

Not Durable Enough

These worked SO WELL... For one night. Maybe my pupper is just super destructive with his chewing, but he had a chunk of the top of the pineapple off less than 10 minutes after opening the package. That being said, the concept is perfect. He is very active when I'm trying to settle him down for the night if he hasn't had enough activity during the day. This translated to him trying to chew everything (including my arm, and RIP my comforter...) I wanted to find something for him to chew on that would help sooth his teeth/gums, since the other toys he loves weren't interesting enough to keep him engaged. Unfortunately, despite one night of his chewing relaxation, he chewed right through them. At least I know the concept of a frozen chew toy is the correct intervention. I'm just sad that these were destroyed so quickly!
