Witch's Hand Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Witch's Hand')

Witch's Hand Daylily brings an unusually dramatic look to the summer garden with narrow spider-form blooms in deep burgundy to near-black tones. Its flowers feel more sculptural than a standard daylily, which makes it especially useful where you want a planting to feel bold, distinctive, and a little unexpected. This variety adds strong flower contrast without needing a large clump or oversized foliage mass to make an impact. In sunny borders, grouped plantings, and larger containers, it delivers a vivid and memorable midsummer display with very little fuss.

Distinctive Features

Witch's Hand Daylily is prized for its spider-form flowers with long, slender petals in deep burgundy to maroon tones and a bright golden throat. The narrow petal shape gives the blooms a stretched, claw-like look that sets this cultivar apart from broader, rounder daylily forms. Plants form a compact mound of arching grassy foliage with flower stalks typically reaching about 24 to 26 inches tall, while the bloom period generally falls in midsummer. Its unusual flower form and dark coloration make it especially effective as a conversation-starting focal perennial. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Plant in full sun to partial shade for the best flowering and strongest overall performance.
  • Soil: Grow in average to fertile, well-drained soil, though it adapts well to a range of garden soils.
  • Water: Provide moderate water during establishment, then maintain average moisture, with best flowering from more consistent moisture.
  • Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9.
  • Habit: Expect a compact clump-forming perennial with arching strap-like foliage and upright flower scapes.

Ideal Uses

  • Perennial Borders: Use it in sunny mixed borders where the dark spider-form blooms can add strong midsummer contrast and unusual texture.
  • Focal Point: Place it in a visible section of the bed where its dramatic flower form can create a bold seasonal highlight.
  • Mass Planting: Plant it in groups where repeated blooms can create a broad sweep of rich summer color with a more exotic look.
  • Collectors' Gardens: Use it where its unusual bloom shape can be appreciated up close as part of a more specialized perennial collection.
  • Containers: Grow it in large containers where the dramatic flowers can be enjoyed at close range through the bloom season.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental moisture during extended dry periods for best bloom performance.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent blooms and old scapes to keep the plant tidy and improve appearance through the season.
  • Division: Divide clumps every few years if needed to maintain vigor and support strong flowering.
  • Cleanup: Remove worn foliage in late season or early spring to refresh the clump.
  • Feeding: A light spring feeding can support healthy foliage and stronger bloom without pushing excessive soft growth.

Why Choose Witch's Hand Daylily?

  • Unusual Spider Form: Long narrow petals create a more dramatic and sculptural look than standard daylily flowers.
  • Dark Flower Color: Deep burgundy to maroon blooms bring stronger midsummer contrast and a more mysterious garden presence.
  • Compact Garden Fit: Its moderate size makes it easy to use in borders, groupings, and larger containers.
  • Strong Visual Contrast: The bright golden throat makes the dark flowers stand out even more clearly in sunny plantings.
  • Dependable Garden Performance: It adapts well to many soils and handles the everyday demands of sunny perennial plantings.

Witch's Hand Daylily is an excellent choice for gardeners who want a daylily with unusual flower form, dark color, and dependable midsummer performance. Its spider-form blooms bring a more dramatic and distinctive look to sunny borders than most standard daylilies, while its clumping habit keeps it practical for everyday landscape use. In grouped plantings, containers, and collectors' beds, it delivers a vivid and unforgettable summer display.

Pack's Promise was okay but not great
Format: Kindle
Pack's Promise was okay but not great. I won't recommend it to anyone that I know. PRO: * Very likable characters * Lots of steamy scenes that are written very well * The spelling and grammar are good * The punctuation is good with the exception of using hyphens instead of commas. Lots of hyphens. Lots and lots of hyphens. CON: * Almost no interactions with any characters outside of Madison and the pack * Nearly no plot. They meet, get together for a heat, agree to make it permanent, done * Quite a few typos such as extraneous words, missing words and words out of order THINGS TO KNOW: * More steamy scenes than storytelling * A lot of MM & MMM, some MFMM during heat

Fluffy and Nice Omegaverse
Format: Kindle
… this would have made 5 stars but for 2 reasons. A.) there were quite a few typos; misspelled words, missing quotations, “the his” mistakes, and various signs that maybe a proofread would do good. B.) the writing was quite textbook. Late blooming omega is struggling with her new self, finds a absurdly wealthy pack of alphas, every thing is almost insta-love but she resists, then decides to love herself and let everyone be happy. Rian was my favourite (obviously the author’s favourite too because he got the most page time) but I wish we could see more of his CEO side? He went to work maybe ONCE the entire time. Gray was supposed to be the “growly one” but he turned out to be puppy dog. Lucas was a genius brainiac doctor - but also super alpha with an aggressive hindbrain with a breeding k*nk?? And then there was no actual “breeding”?? Spice 3/5 - normally omegaverse books are super high on messy smut but this was tamer. Romance 3/5 - insta-love that was then resisted because of personal hangup’s Plot 2/5 - weird paced head hopping, showing the same scene from different POV’s that made me feel like it was 2 steps backward, 1 step forward. Humour 4/5 - there were a dozen lines that genuinely made me chuckle out loud Would have been five stars but the lack of proofreading and the predictable plot made me unable to get up to ADORED IT level - four stars is still and official ENJOYED IT, y’all. This isn’t a bad rating. The “Club Heat” has intriguing possibilities so I’m going to give the second one a shot.

Baby bumps and bodyguards
Format: Kindle
Dark, emotional, and unexpectedly tender, Not Ready is an omegaverse romance that delivers found family feels, fierce protectiveness, and a very pregnant heroine who refuses to break. Vale’s on the run from a stalker, but lands in the arms of three private security alphas, cue the swoony tension, fake marriage twist, and slow-burn heat. It’s a little gritty, a little soft, and a whole lot addictive. If you love protective alphas, high stakes, and heroines with quiet strength, this one’s a must-read.
