Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Freddie different from other striped Calatheas?

Freddie features distinctively bold, zebra-like stripes with dramatic contrast between dark green and bright silver-green areas. The striping pattern is more geometric and pronounced than other varieties, creating an almost graphic design effect that's perfect for modern interiors.

Why do the leaves move throughout the day?

This natural movement is called nyctinasty - the leaves fold upward each evening like praying hands, then unfurl each morning. This fascinating daily ritual is completely normal and healthy, giving prayer plants their common name and providing endless entertainment as you watch the zebra patterns shift.

How can I maintain the bold stripe contrast?

Provide bright, indirect light and maintain high humidity levels. The dramatic silver-green and dark green contrast becomes more pronounced with proper care. Avoid direct sunlight which can fade the stripes, and ensure consistent moisture without overwatering.

Is this plant safe around pets and children?

Absolutely! Calathea plants are completely non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans, making them perfect worry-free choices for families who want to enjoy their stunning zebra-striped foliage and fascinating prayer movements safely throughout their home.

Why are my leaf edges turning brown?

Brown leaf edges typically indicate low humidity, water quality issues, or inconsistent watering. Increase humidity around the plant, use filtered or distilled water, and maintain consistent soil moisture. The dramatic zebra stripes should remain vibrant with proper care adjustments.

Great artwork for a great series!! Recommended to artists, animators and fans of the series
It's been a while since the Avatar: The Last Airbender series ran on TV. I really loved that series because it dealt with a lot of eastern cultures themes and it was not the average children TV show. Despite its children characters the show runners manged to find a balance between drama and comedy. Now about the art book: that series (Avatar) had its own book (all seasons in one single book) but this time we are getting one book entirely dedicated to the first season, which makes it great. Why? Because we are getting more artwork per episode, most of it in full-color. I would have liked to see more of the character design, I mean how they got to the final version. Most of the characters are shown in their final version with some costume variants but that's it, no development. One thing missing this time (both from the series and this book) is the animal designs. They had a lot 2-animal-fusion designs on the previous show but this time we get to see almost nothing. I know it is because the series is takes place mainly in Republic City. And wow! what a nice city it is. All the artwork dedicated to set Republic City's mood, the 1920s, the steam-punk influence, the fashion, everything just fits perfectly! There is a couple of aerial views (day & night) which are my favorite from the book. This new guy they hired to do the background paintings has done a great job! Every background and every building design have so much detail that they will make your jaw just drop. I like the fact they are paintings with no pencil lines, just paint brushed over the design, which makes it look richer! Now, I am giving this book a 4-star rating because of the reasons I have already explained and the fact that we are not getting that much in-depth information like we got from the Avatar art book . I must say this is not an animation book, this is an art book that depicts backgrounds, characters and vehicles. You will get to see a few storyboarded sequences but this book is not intended to teach you about animation. I seriously recommend this book to any person interested in art and animation. The artwork is so well achieved that you will be left wanting to see more.

Inspirational for Concepts and Illustration
I am learning to be a Concept Designer and Illustrator and this art book is inspirational. This art book has well presented examples for most every part of the conception and finishing process for characters, environments, costumes, props, and story. It has a good amount of design concepts from everything about the series first season: character designs, character sheets, building and city designs, costumes, vehicles, etc. I only wish is was longer/bigger. They could put all 4 seasons into one large encompassing volume.

Bought the book as a gift for my 12 year old son. The information in the book is good and goes into good detail about the Halo Universe and the Human-Covenant War. The art work is excellent. Well worth the cost.

Somewhat underwhelming; but still a good book that references a lot of things Halo 4 related
Format: Hardcover
I have been looking forward to this book for several months now, as there is not a lot of material out there that covers Halo 4 or the lore around this newest entry (and upcoming trilogy). There is the "Halo Encyclopedia" (released in 2009), which only covered everything up to Halo 3; and the first "Halo: The Essential Visual Guide" (released in 2011), which covered everything up to Halo: Reach. The first Essential Visual Guide was basically a watered-down version of the Encyclopedia. While both of those are great books, the Encyclopedia is one of the best sources out there for definitive Halo information. So here we finally get a book regarding the new lore of the Halo universe we've been learning about since 2011 (starting with the Forerunner and Kilo-Five novel trilogies, and Halo 4 itself). But don't get your hopes up; unfortunately, this is nothing like the Encyclopedia that we already have access to. Overall, this is a good book, but I was a bit underwhelmed with it. Let me try and explain why. If you are a newcomer to the Halo universe, then obviously this book would do a great job in introducing the new characters/enemies/locations of Halo 4 to you. But if you are a veteran like me, who has been delving into Halo lore for over a decade now, the book doesn't really show or teach you anything new. Each entry is basically a very rushed explanation of what that particular person, ship, location, etc is about. I know it's unfair to assume that this would have been a definitive source for information, but it's just a shame how bland the detail is. Several of the entries in this book have enough information regarding them to where it could cover several pages, yet just about everything in this book is narrowed down to one page. I understand it is a Visual Guide, and not a factual, historical records of Halo events; but even the pictures are somewhat underwhelming. Each entry could have contained so much more information and photos than they had. The UNSC Infinity, for example, was simply stretched out across two pages, with not a lot of information regarding it and a grand total of three pictures (none of which were even of the interior). I will say there were some entertaining parts in the book, especially regarding the Spartans of Majestic Team (since not much background info was explained in the game). But these were so few and far between for me. A good half of the book covers the weapons, vehicles, armor, and multiplayer maps in Halo 4. In my opinion, a lot of that stuff shouldn't have even been covered (since a lot of it has already been covered in the past, in the Encyclopedia and the first Essential Visual Guide). So again, that just goes with my point about the book not meeting my expectations. But let me elaborate one more time, that I am a fanatic of Halo lore. If you are like me, and have been following the franchise since it's beginning, you probably won't find too much stuff in here that you don't already know about, and the book may be kind of a let down because of it. But if you are a newcomer to Halo or simply a casual fan, then this book is a good enough catalog of information regarding just about everything Halo 4 related. The best part of the book were the first 20 pages or so, where they showed off all of the major characters. After that, there just wasn't enough for me to be excited about; simply because I already knew just about everything they were trying to explain. I really wish DK and 343 Industries would update the Halo Enclyclopedia (or just create a brand new one) to include all of the new stuff pertaining to the Forerunner novels, Kilo-Five novels, Halo 4, and everything else post Halo 3 related we have learned in these past several years. But none the less, this book is still a good enough reference for a great price. And I anxiously await to see what 343 Industries does next with the series, regarding both the games and possible novels/comics.
