Vicks plant, or Succulent Coleus, is a unique and aromatic herb known for its menthol-like fragrance, reminiscent of Vicks Vaporub. This perennial beauty is a perfect rare and unusual addition to your herb garden, bringing both soothing scents and practical benefits. Vicks herb is an essential addition for home gardeners, prized for its ease of cultivation and ability to thrive with minimal effort.

History and Heritage

The Vicks plant, or Plectranthus tomentosa, originates in the warm, tropical climates of Africa and Asia, where it has thrived for centuries. The plant’s name reflects its soft, velvety leaves, with "tomentose" referring to the fine hairs that cover them.

Historically, it has been cultivated for its soothing, aromatic qualities. Modern enthusiasts often compare it to the menthol scent of Vicks Vaporub, which is how it got its unique name. Its introduction to modern herbal gardens outside of its native regions has brought the plant to new heights of popularity, appreciated by casual gardeners and those interested in its holistic benefits.

Appearance and Characteristics

When touched, vicks plants boast soft, velvety leaves that release a cooling, minty fragrance. Their lush, fuzzy, oval-shaped leaves are thick and succulent, allowing the plant to store water efficiently and withstand dry conditions. In the right conditions, they may even produce small, pale purple flowers, adding a charming touch to their lush green appearance.

This evergreen plant grows in compact, trailing mounds with a height of around 12 inches. When touched, the leaves release a powerful menthol fragrance, similar to Vicks Vaporub. The plant typically grows in compact mounds with trailing stems that can extend outward.

Vicks Plant Uses and Benefits

Vicks plants offer a unique scent, which, along with their medicinal reputation, has made them a popular choice in home gardens and traditional medicine for respiratory relief and general wellness. Some of its uses include:

  • Soothing Menthol Fragrance: Its leaves emit a refreshing menthol scent, perfect for clearing the air or creating a calming atmosphere in your home or garden.

  • Natural Decongestant: Vicks Plant has traditionally been used to ease nasal congestion, much like its namesake, Vicks Vaporub, by simply inhaling its aroma.

  • Aromatic Companion: This fragrant herb can be grown in pots on windowsills or patios to keep the air fresh and fragrant year-round.

  • Decorative Accent: The plant’s attractive, trailing habit and fuzzy leaves make it a charming addition to hanging baskets or container gardens.

  • Natural Insect Repellent: Its strong aroma is known to repel certain pests, making it a useful companion plant in vegetable and herb gardens.

  • Air Purifier: Vicks Plant can help improve indoor air quality by naturally absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen, promoting a healthier environment.

  • Medicinal Uses: It has been used in folk medicine for its potential to ease colds, headaches, and skin irritations when its leaves are crushed and applied externally.

Vicks Plant Care, Maintenance, and Growing Tips

Vicks plants are suitable for growing in indoor and outdoor areas. With proper care, you can grow them in a regular pot or place them on hanging baskets for your aesthetics. Growing Vicks Plant is a breeze for gardeners of all levels. Here’s how to cultivate this aromatic herb:

  • Location: Vicks Plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight, usually in areas within Zones 9 to 12. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but prefers shaded areas in hotter climates.

  • Planting: Ideal for regular containers or hanging baskets with a recommended size of at least five gallons. Plant your Vicks plant in well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging.

  • Soil: A well-draining potting mix, like one used for succulents, is essential for this plant. The soil should provide adequate aeration while allowing excess water to escape.

  • Watering: Vicks Plant is drought-tolerant and only needs watering when the soil dries out. Overwatering should be avoided, as it can cause root rot.

  • Pruning: Regular pruning keeps the plant from becoming too leggy and promotes fuller growth. Harvest leaves as needed for their aroma or medicinal purposes, ensuring healthy regrowth.

  • Ecosystem: This plant is a great addition to your garden ecosystem, attracting helpful pollinators like bees and butterflies. Its strong aroma is also a natural repellent for certain garden pests and mosquitoes.

  • Companion Plants: Vicks Plant pairs well with other aromatic herbs like lavender, rosemary, and thyme. Its pleasant fragrance and pest-repelling properties make it an ideal companion in herb gardens or mixed planters.

Works, and no residue!
Style: SPF 50 (Pack of 2), Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 2)
I love that I can just use my FSA account to buy this. The sunscreen works well and does not irritate my kids sensitive skin. What I like the most is that it does not leave residue everywhere so I can do a quick spray on the kids every morning before daycare. I also spray my son's head because he has a very fair skin and does not wear a hat at daycare. It seems to be doing well by the pool too. Good value pack.

Must have sunscreen for kids!
Style: SPF 50 (Pack of 3), Size: 5.5 Fl Oz (Pack of 3)
This is our favorite sunscreen. It is easy to apply stays on and my kids do not get burned. I have a 9, 8 and 6 year-old we live in Florida and this is the only sunscreen we buy for their body. It does not cause any skin irritation.

Light white cast, blends well
Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I was recently influenced that I should be using mineral sunscreens to protect the environment as well as my skin from UV rays, so I've been on a search for the perfect mineral sunscreen. I saw online that it's difficult to find a sunscreen without white cast in the states, but I think this Alba lotion is as close as I've gotten. The body and face lotion is a little thicker than the lotion marketed as just for the face. The body lotion blends out easily, but there is a light white cast. I used baby oil mixed with my bronzer over the top after it had set in, and it's indistinguishable from a natural skin tone now (and a shimmer bronzer just looks good in the sun). One thing is that the picture in the listing says spf 50, but the one I received is spf 45. (but I was seriously using spf 15 with mica shimmer added for the last 20 years of my life, so I think I'm going to be fine with spf 45) I tried the cetaphil mineral face and body lotion, and it left a white cast. I tried the aveeno mineral face and body sunscreen and it was even more white and chalky. It made me feel scaly. I even tried the Oars and Alps mineral face and body lotion with jojoba oil, and that one left me with a white cast worse than all of them. For reference, I am pale, and I use self tan lotion, but these other mineral sunscreens made me look chalky. I also had my partner use all of these products, hopeful that they might work differently on other skintypes. I'm fair and acne prone, and my partner is darker in complexion with dry skin. I looked well blended compared to how ghostly he was. I was especially surprised because Oars and Alps was marketed toward outdoorsy men, and marketed as moisturizing with the jojoba oil. He and I both found the Oars + Alps products to be greasy, sticky, white, and transferable to clothes and anything else you touch. This alba lotion is in too small of packaging, and takes longer to apply than spray sunscreens, but it feels the best, looks the best, and especially I'm impressed with the face lotion.

I wear in on my face and on the back of my hands. its a workout to rub it in the skin. so what I have found is if i just dott my face with this and after 15 minutes or so I spread it on to the skin...spreads easily. does not have a strong smell, its almost odorless, does make the face look a little whiteish.

Highly effective. Application requires patience.
Size: 4 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Things that I loved about this sunscreen lotion: Excellent barrier against the sun rays No nasty chemicals in the ingredients list Ability to purchase a smaller bottle Price is competitive with similar items My child had NO reaction to this product while in the sun and water Things that I didn't care for: How thick it is (although it could be part of why it is excellent protection) How long it takes to apply, multiple times to rub in How chalky white it is on the skin before absorption My daughter has eczema. In her toddler and younger years, it was in the joints of the arms and legs. She is now 9 and began having breakouts on her face after we spent a day in the sun or at the beach. Pink, flaky areas would hurt, even on her eyelids. We took her to a couple of doctors and they suggested changing her sunscreen to one that is only mineral based. I was beginning to think she was allergic to the sun or sand. We have used this a couple of times now at the pool and beach and she has not had another episode. Although this goes on thick and you have to rub it in for a few minutes, I will continue using it on her face. I did purchase a different brand of mineral sunscreen for easier application on her body, but she wasn't having a severe reaction elsewhere. If your child has any eczema issues that are exacerbated with the sun, salt or chlorine, I would highly recommend this product for at least the face. It's worth it.
