The Chinese Money Plant, known as Pilea peperomioides, is one of the most beloved houseplants in the world, admired for its coin-shaped leaves, minimalist look, and ease of care. Often seen gracing modern interiors and Instagram feeds, this quirky plant brings a charming architectural quality to any space.

Traditionally, the Chinese Money Plant is believed to bring prosperity, good fortune, and financial abundance, which is why it’s often given as a gift. This plant goes by many names, including the UFO Plant, Pancake Plant, Missionary Plant, and simply the Money Plant (not to be confused with Crassula ovata or Epipremnum aureum).

According to feng shui, the Chinese Money Plant is more than just a decorative addition, it's considered a symbol of prosperity and good luck.

The round, shiny leaves resemble coins, making it a go-to plant for those hoping to attract wealth and positive energy into their homes or offices.

To bring prosperity and good luck into your life, feng shui practice suggests placing the plant in the southeast corner of your living space, which is associated with wealth and abundance.

It’s also popular to give the plant as a gift, especially when it has produced “pups” or offsets, which are thought to spread fortune when shared.

The plant grows in a mounded shape and stays compact, typically reaching a mature size of about 12 inches tall and 12 inches wide.

It can grow to double its size in a year with proper lighting. Its symmetry and upright growth habit make it perfect for shelves, desks, or as a tabletop focal point.

Native to the mountainous regions of Yunnan Province in southern China, the Chinese money plant is defined by its shiny, round, flat leaves perched above long, slender stems that radiate from a central point.

The Chinese Money Plant can produce tiny, pale-pink to white flowers on thin stalks in ideal indoor conditions, usually during spring. However, blooming is rare and not its main feature. What makes this plant especially unique is its tendency to produce numerous offsets or “pups” at the base and even along its roots, which can be gently removed and propagated with ease.

The full-grown Chinese Money Plant is popular for its easy-care nature, unique round leaves, and air-purifying qualities, making it a great decorative houseplant for modern interiors. Its upright, architectural look adds charm to tabletops, shelves, or hanging planters.

When and How to Water Your Chinese Money Plant

The Chinese Money Plant is mildly drought-tolerant and does not like sitting in wet soil, which can quickly lead to root rot. During average conditions, let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry out between waterings. If you’re unsure, it’s safer to wait a day or two longer than to water too soon.

The plant can tolerate short dry spells better than overwatering. Water your Chinese Money Plant every 7–10 days during its growing season (March to September) using about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water and reduce watering to every 14–21 days during dormancy (October to February).

From March to September, during its growing season, water the plant every 7–10 days with about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water, depending on pot size and indoor climate. You’ll notice it grows faster and pushes out new leaves during this time, so more frequent watering is appropriate. Make sure to use a pot with good drainage and empty any saucers to prevent soggy soil.

From October to February, in its dormant season, reduce watering to every 14–21 days using around 1/4 cup, only when the soil feels completely dry. Growth will slow down or stop, and watering too much during this period increases the risk of root rot. Place it in a slightly cooler location during dormancy, if possible, to help mimic natural seasonal changes.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Chinese Money Plant

When growing indoors, place your Chinese Money Plant near a bright east or north-facing window with indirect light for 6–8 hours daily.

Chinese Money Plant thrives in bright, indirect indoor light and grows best near east- or north-facing windows.

Avoid intense, direct midday sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

If you only have south- or west-facing windows, place it a few feet back or use a sheer curtain. Under low-light conditions, it may become leggy, producing fewer and smaller leaves.

When growing outdoors, give your plant filtered morning sun and bright shade in the afternoon, ideally 3–4 hours of gentle light daily. It can be placed on a shaded patio or balcony during warm months; but must be brought indoors before temperatures drop.

Avoid direct sun exposure during summer afternoons, which can burn the delicate foliage.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Chinese Money Plant prefers a well-drained, airy, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0), and should be fertilized once a year. A quality indoor potting mix amended with perlite or pumice ensures proper drainage. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has Go to cactus mix blend 1 gal 4 qt cacti succulent dirt compost growing media that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system, to help your succulents thrive. Avoid compacted or moisture-retentive soils, as they increase the risk of rot.

Fertilize your plant once a year in spring using a diluted balanced liquid NPK fertilizer of about 5-10-5. Too much feeding can lead to salt buildup or leggy growth. No fertilizer is needed during the dormant season (October to February), as the plant slows its growth and won’t benefit from added nutrients. Flush the soil occasionally with plain water to remove any accumulated salts.

Pro Tip: It’s perfectly natural for your Chinese Money Plant to shed an occasional older leaf as it focuses energy on fresh growth. But if you notice multiple leaves dropping at once, overwatering and potential root rot are often to blame. Act quickly by checking the soil and root-adjust watering to help your plant bounce back.

Chinese Money Plant Indoor Requirements

The best place to grow a Chinese Money Plant indoors is near an east- or north-facing window where it can receive bright, indirect light throughout the day. Avoid placing it directly in harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch its delicate, round leaves. When grown indoors, the Chinese Money Plant thrives in temperatures between 60–75°F, with moderate humidity levels of 40% to 60%. It does well in typical household conditions but appreciates extra humidity, which you can provide with a pebble tray or by grouping it with other plants. Always position it away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and direct heat sources like radiators to prevent stress.

Hardiness Zones & More

In all other U.S. states, where winter temperatures dip below this threshold, it is best grown indoors or kept as a seasonal outdoor plant during warm months.

If you choose to place it outside during summer, be sure to bring it back indoors by late September or early October to protect it from cold damage.

The Pilea peperomioides can only be grown outdoors year-round in Hawaii, where USDA Zones 10–11 provide the consistently warm, frost-free climate it needs.

In these tropical conditions, the plant enjoys filtered sunlight, mild humidity, and temperatures that stay safely above 50°F.

Wildlife – Pilea peperomioides Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

When in bloom, Pilea peperomioides may draw a few tiny flies or gnats, but it is not a plant that is known to draw bees, hummingbirds, or butterflies. This plant is more decorative than wildlife-supportive, but its tiny pale flowers can sometimes catch the attention of small insects. However, it’s not a nectar-rich plant and shouldn’t be relied upon to attract pollinators like salvia or milkweed.

According to the ASPCA, Pilea peperomioides is non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. This makes it a pet-friendly houseplant option and a great choice for families. Even if ingested, it rarely causes more than mild stomach upset. Still, always supervise pets around houseplants to discourage chewing.

How to Propagate Your Chinese Money Plant

Pilea peperomioides is easily propagated from baby plantlets, which grow from the base or roots of mature plants. When a healthy plant matures, it produces offsets (also called pups) that can be removed and replanted. Wait until the baby plant is 2–3 inches tall, then gently dig around the base and snip it from the parent with a clean knife or scissors.

Ensure the pup has some roots for faster establishment. Plant the offset in a small pot with moist, well-draining soil. Keep it in bright, indirect light and water lightly. Within a few weeks, it should root and begin growing independently. You can also try propagating leaf cuttings in water, but this method is slower and less reliable.

Potting and Repotting Chinese Money Plant

Chinese Money Plant prefers a small to medium-sized pot with excellent drainage, and it typically needs repotting once every 1–2 years as it outgrows its container. When potting or repotting, choose a container that has drainage holes and use a light, well-draining soil mix, such as a blend designed for indoor plants or a succulent mix with added perlite or coconut coir. Repotting is best done in spring, just before or as the plant enters its active growing season.

If you notice roots circling the bottom or poking through the drainage holes, or if water drains too quickly, it’s a sign your Pilea has outgrown its current pot. While repotting, it's a great opportunity to separate and propagate any baby offsets (“pups”) growing around the base. After repotting, water the plant lightly and place it in indirect light to help it adjust to its new environment without stress.

I have found my HOLY GRAIL of makeup removers and face cleansers!
Scent: Unscented, Size: 6.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This has to be the best face cleanser/makeup removers I have ever used in my 42 years of existence. Now before I tell you about the product - let me tell you about my skin: Uber sensitive, oily T-section, very prone to breakouts, blackheads, eczema, blotches, allergic reactions, you name it. I just look at some cleansers and my skin breaks out. I wear contact lenses, and my eyes are sensitive too. Now the last thing I would ever think of putting on my face is anything that has an "oil" in it, yet alone a product that IS an "oil." First of all, logic dictates that oil and water don't mix, plus if you've ever dripped salad oil on your chin, you know it's impossible to get out - and your skin feels greasy even after 2 showers later. And then you break out with a pimple there because your pores got clogged. Right? Now getting back to this product. I was watching one of those shopping channels on TV, and this really pricey cleansing oil comes on. And the lady just rubs the cleansing oil into her skin with her dry fingers (no water) and the makeup just melts off. She rubs it into waterproof lipstick, takes a white cloth and the whole thing wipes right off in one swoop! Noo... that's impossible. Then she does it again on her eyes - dry hands, pumps a few drips of the oil into her hand, massages it into her eyelids, and within 10 seconds later even the waterproof mascara gets wiped away with the cloth. Now there was no way I was going to pay $120 a bottle for their cleansing oil, so I went on Amazon to see if there was a comparable alternative. I came across this DHC one and figured, what the heck? Wow! I cannot believe it - this stuff works incredibly! I did it the same way as on TV, and my eyeshadow, waterproof eyeliner, and waterproof mascara, even the glue from false eyelashes just comes right off. I just pump 2-3 pumps of oil in my hand, close my eyes, rub my face with this oil for like 10-12 seconds, feel around for the cotton pad on the counter without opening my eyes, and wipe away the oil around my eyes, lips. Then I cup my hands with warm water and splash it on my face several times. Supposedly you don't have to use water, but I do. The oil comes right off - no oily feeling at all. And my skin is smooth. Now this sounds crazy - but the blackheads around my nose area - 100% gone! Somehow this oil (over a week's time) works better than any clay mask I have ever used in removing clogged pores. Just in case you also wear contacts, you know contacts plus any oil is bad and makes red, itchy, dry eyes. So I usually remove my contacts (just in case) first, and then wash my face. Or if I have to put my contacts back in right afterwards, I do use a normal cleanser for my face afterwards in my eye area, just to ensure there's no trace of oil. So far (been through 3 bottles) I have not had any problems. No breakouts, no scrubbing to get off makeup, no itchy skin, no blackheads - actually I think it might be protecting my skin somehow because even during this itchy pollen season, I'm perfectly fine. Love love love this stuff!!!

Use it daily to get sunscreen off
Scent: Unscented, Size: 4.1 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I use this every single day to remove my sunscreen at the end of the day. If you wear SPF daily you know how hard it is to fully get it off with a regular cleanser. This oil breaks it down completely without scrubbing or tugging at your face. The gentleness is what keeps me coming back. I massage it onto dry skin for about a minute and everything dissolves. Sunscreen, any makeup residue, whatever built up during the day. It rinses clean with water and leaves zero greasy residue behind. My skin feels fresh after, not stripped or tight. No fragrance and no colorant. I appreciate that because my skin reacts to basically everything unnecessary in a formula. Zero skin irritation after months of daily use. The ingredients are simple and effective. Olive oil based with vitamin E and it doesn't try to do too much. Just cleans thoroughly and gets out of the way. My skin appearance has honestly improved since I started using this consistently. I think properly removing sunscreen every night was the missing step in my routine. Pores look cleaner, fewer random breakouts, and my other products absorb better on freshly cleansed skin. The medium 4.1 oz bottle lasts me about two months with nightly use. Already on my third bottle and it's another subscribe and save staple.

Still One of the Best Cleansing Oils I’ve Ever Used After Years of Repurchasing
Scent: Unscented, Size: 7.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I rarely stay loyal to skincare products for years because I’m always testing and trying new things, but DHC Deep Cleansing Oil is one of the very few products that has remained a permanent part of my routine. I’ve repurchased this multiple times over the years, and every time I try another cleansing oil, I eventually come back to this one because the performance is just consistently good. The first thing that stands out is how effective it is at removing makeup. I wear waterproof mascara, eyeliner, sunscreen, and long-wear foundation regularly, and this breaks everything down incredibly fast without needing to aggressively rub my skin. I usually apply one pump onto dry hands and massage it onto my dry face for about 30 seconds. You can literally feel the makeup dissolving almost immediately, especially around the eye area where stubborn makeup usually takes extra effort to remove. What I really appreciate is that it removes heavy makeup in one application. I don’t have to go back in multiple times or use separate eye makeup removers anymore. Even waterproof mascara that normally leaves residue around the lashes comes off cleanly. That alone saves me so much time at night when I’m exhausted and just want my skincare routine done quickly. Once water is added, the oil transforms into a light milky texture that spreads evenly and rinses away very easily. A lot of cleansing oils claim to rinse clean but still leave behind a greasy film that makes me feel like I need another cleanser immediately afterward. This one actually rinses off properly with water and leaves my skin feeling clean, soft, and balanced instead of heavy or sticky. Another reason I’ve continued using this for years is because it doesn’t make my skin feel stripped. My skin tends to get dehydrated easily if I use harsh cleansers, especially during colder months, but this leaves my face feeling comfortable and hydrated. The olive oil and vitamin E in the formula definitely help with keeping the skin soft after cleansing. My skin usually feels smoother and calmer afterward instead of tight and irritated. I also haven’t experienced clogged pores from this, which surprised me because I was originally nervous about putting an oil cleanser on my face. Instead, it actually helps loosen buildup and sunscreen better than many foaming cleansers I’ve tried. My skin texture always looks cleaner and more refreshed after using it consistently. The bottle also lasts a very long time because you honestly don’t need much product. One pump covers my entire face easily, including eye makeup removal. Even with regular use, the full-size bottle lasts me months, so I feel like the value is actually very good considering how little product is needed each time. The included travel size is another nice bonus. I keep the mini bottle in my travel bag or purse because it’s convenient for trips and prevents me from having to transfer product into another container. It’s small but still lasts quite a while. One more thing worth mentioning is the price. I’ve purchased this from different places over the years, and this listing is usually cheaper than buying directly from the official store. Whenever I see it on sale, I stock up because it’s one of those products I genuinely never want to run out of. Overall, this is one of the most reliable cleansing oils I’ve used. It removes makeup quickly, rinses clean without residue, feels gentle on the skin, and lasts a long time. If you wear makeup regularly, use waterproof products, or simply want a cleansing oil that actually performs the way it promises to, this one is absolutely worth trying.

i’ve been repurchasing this for almost 8 years now. hands down this is a holy grail product for me and i have been recommending it to everyone. it takes my makeup off great and it leaves my skin feeling so smooth and soft. its very lightweight and it is very easy to use. i use this for about 10-20 minutes before i use a water based cleanser to take it off. it got rid of little bumbs i have and i genuinely do feel blackheads and dead skin coming off as i use it. this made my skin do a 180 and i will def be using this until the day i die. i love this and recommend it so much.

Reliable choice
Scent: Unscented, Size: 6.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Product I have been purchasing for almost a decade. Excellent at getting out black heads around the nose and mouth. However, if you do not thoroughly double cleanse after, you will be sure to experience a break out. It has a mild scent that doesn’t bother me, typically I get headaches from too strong of a scent. Overall, it’s a gentle way to cleanse and protect your skin health.
