The Monstera is one of the most instantly recognisable plants in the world. This is because of their obvious popularity and their distinct leaves, which are vast, green and glossy and of course have the iconic holes that earned it its nickname ‘Swiss Cheese’.
Light: Place the Monstera in semi-shade, this plant needs lots of light but won’t cope with direct sunlight. Adaptation to lower light levels.
The deep lobes and splits in the leaves of Monsteras serve a purpose beyond aesthetics. These splits allow sunlight to penetrate deeper into the leaf, reaching chloroplasts located in the lower layers. This adaptation helps the plant utilize available light more effectively in low-light conditions.
Watering: Light watering only. Allow the top two inches of soil to dry out between watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to ensure proper drainage. The frequency of watering will depend on various factors such as temperature, humidity, and the size of the plant.
Humidity: Monstera deliciosa prefers higher humidity levels, but it can tolerate average household humidity. Boosting humidity through misting, placing the plant on a tray with water and pebbles, or using a humidifier can be beneficial, especially in drier environments.
Temperature: This plant prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but is sensitive to frost. Avoid exposing it to drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations.
