Paver Sand — Coarse Washed Sand for Patio Bedding, Walkway Bases & Drainage

Our Paver Sand is the larger-grain washed sand contractors and DIYers use specifically under pavers, flagstone, and patio stone. It's the ICPI-spec bedding layer that lets hardscape stay level for years without shifting. Sold loose by the cubic yard, delivered direct to your driveway or job site across Greater Boston. The bigger grain size drains water fast, which is what you want anywhere drainage is part of the install.

At a glance

Material Coarse-grain washed sand
Spec Generally aligns with ASTM C33 fine aggregate / ICPI paver bedding
Coverage ~100 sq ft at 3" depth (or ~300 sq ft at 1" paver bedding)
Weight ~2,600–2,800 lbs/yd³ (~1.3–1.4 tons)
Also known as ICPI paver bedding sand, bedding sand, hardscape sand
Sold by The cubic yard, bulk dump truck delivery

What it's good for

  • Paver bedding — the 1" leveling layer between your compacted base and the pavers
  • Patio & walkway base sand — under flagstone, bluestone, brick, and stamped concrete
  • Drainage backfill around foundations, French drains, and downspout extensions
  • Wet-spot remediation in lawns and garden beds where water pools
  • Mixing into heavy clay topsoil to lighten texture and improve drainage

How much paver sand do I need?

For a 12' × 12' paver patio with the standard 1" sand leveling layer, plan on about 0.5 cubic yards of paver sand. For a 30' × 4' walkway, you're looking at 0.4 cubic yards. For a French drain trench 50' long × 12" wide × 18" deep, roughly 2.8 cubic yards of drainage backfill.

Rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard of paver sand covers about 300 square feet at the standard 1" bedding depth. Order 10–15% extra to account for compaction and edge work.

Paver Sand vs Polymeric Sand vs Joint Sand — which do you need?

Three different sand products do three different jobs in a paver install:

  • Paver Sand (this product) — the coarse washed bedding layer UNDER the pavers. Goes between the compacted base and the paver itself.
  • Joint Sand / Mason Sand — fine sand swept into the joints BETWEEN pavers. We sell Mason Sand for joint work.
  • Polymeric Sand — joint sand pre-mixed with binders that activate when wet. Sold in bags by hardscape suppliers; we don't carry it bulk.

You need Paver Sand (this) + joint sand for a complete paver install. Plus a compacted base material like our Dense Pack ¾" to minus underneath for structural support.

How Paver Sand compares

  • vs. Coarse Sand — Coarse Sand is the broader-spec multi-purpose grade for drainage, traction, equestrian footing, and general fill. Paver Sand is the ICPI-spec hardscape bedding grade specifically tuned for paver and flagstone installs. Pick Paver Sand for hardscape; Coarse Sand for everything else.
  • vs. Concrete Sand — Same material family. "Paver Sand" is the trade name for the ICPI-spec bedding grade; "Concrete Sand" is the formal ASTM C33 spec name for ready-mix and structural use. Functionally close, with Concrete Sand held to a tighter spec sheet.
  • vs. Mason Sand — Mason sand is finer. Use mason for joints; paver sand for bedding.
  • vs. Stone Dust — Stone dust was the traditional paver bedding material — ICPI guidance now favors paver/concrete sand because it doesn't shift over time. Stone dust is fine for stepping stones and flagstone in dry-laid applications.
  • vs. Septic Sand — Septic sand is Title 5-spec for leach fields. Don't substitute for paver bedding.

Frequently asked questions

Is Paver Sand the same as Coarse Sand?
Same general material family, but the names point at different use cases at our yard. Paver Sand is the ICPI-spec grade we sell specifically for the bedding layer under pavers and flagstone. Coarse Sand is the broader-spec multi-purpose grade we sell for drainage, traction, footing, and general fill. Pick the one that matches the job.

How thick should paver bedding sand be?
1" per ICPI guidelines — no more, no less. Thicker beds settle and shift. Always screed level before setting pavers.

Do I need geotextile fabric under the paver sand?
Recommended for long-term performance. Fabric goes between the compacted base and the sand layer, preventing sand from migrating down into the base over years of freeze-thaw.

How much sand for a 12 × 12 paver patio?
About 0.5 cubic yards at 1" bedding depth.

How much does a cubic yard weigh?
About 2,600–2,800 lbs per cubic yard.

Do you deliver in the Boston area?
Yes — same-day and next-day bulk delivery across Suffolk, Middlesex, Norfolk, and Plymouth Counties.

Same-day and next-day bulk delivery, no minimum order. We run paver sand across Suffolk, Middlesex, Norfolk, and Plymouth County daily.

Pair with our Concrete Sand when you need an even tighter spec for under-paver bedding, or our Dense Pack ¾" to minus for the compacted base layer underneath. For non-hardscape applications — drainage, traction, footing, fill — see Coarse Sand instead.

Order paver sand today — bulk delivery, no bags, no minimum, the right grain size for the job.

My puppy’s favorite fetch toy!
Size: Small
Update Aug 27, 2024: After 10 months, these are still his favorite ball. He’s obsessed with fetching and plays with them all day. They do bounce really high. Unfortunately, the small size aren’t available for sale anywhere anymore. I tried the medium size, and he has a bit of trouble hanging on to them, but he manages. Weirdly, he prefers the orange one, but he also plays with the blue one. My 7 month old Shih Tzu puppy loves to fetch, and these are his new favorites. They’re small enough to fit in his mouth, and they are made of hard plastic, so he’s able to hold on to them. They have a lot of bounce, and this adds to the fun for him. I highly recommend them.

Genuinely bummed that these great balls can’t stand up against my Chloè.
Size: Medium
I love all the Chuckit brand of balls. I found that the Strabo and glow balls in the Chuckit line are the softest, and as such, don't last as long as the rest of Chuckit line of balls. Having said that, they do last longer than than every other brand I've tried (and I do believe I’ve tried every brand available on the market today.) The strato balls do bounce higher than any of the other balls in the Chuckit line. They really are a good value.

Great dog balls at a great price
Size: Medium
The balls are a favorite for my dog. I could have done without the hole through the middle because I don't do treats in balls anyway. My dog loves balls for their own merit. I needed replacement balls for my Nerf Dog Ball launcher. It seems the originals have disappeared from the market. I took a chance because the price is right and this Chuck-it ball works very well so we're liking this ball a lot. So far my Dachsund, who can destroy a tennis ball (the kind they are selling as Nerf Dog replacements) in 3 minutes has not done any damage to this one so that's a win. I recommend this as a much better ball than the fuzzy tennis balls. I like the colors too since many dog toys are green (which gets lost in the lawn, etc.) or red (even though dogs have red/green color blindness. Blue and orange are good and pretty easy to find. I liked these well enough that this set was my second purchase so I will have spares in case the others are lost.

My Baby loves his new baby!
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
Finally! A ball my 107 lb. pitty/pointer mix can’t destroy. He has torn up every single “indestructible” toy in a day or so until now. He peels fabric and fur off non-rubber toys. He is a 4-legged shredder. I’ve added pictures of him for a size reference of my dog versus this product. I know I had wanted that when shopping for this item. This ball is now his beloved “baby.” He goes absolutely insane looking for it, chewing it, chasing it, and even sleeping with it. He won’t rest unless he knows exactly where it is. It is his only toy, and he is good with that. After getting this home, I tried giving him other choices, but he won’t touch them. I was worried that he would rip it apart by putting his teeth in the holes, but so far, not a scratch. It is soft enough to collapse just enough to keep it from cracking when his jaws crush it but not so soft that he can rip it to sheds. The holes are large enough to prevent a suction or vacuum effect on his tongue or mouth. For his size jaws, it is a perfect fit. Other dogs might have problems with suction or be able to get their teeth in those holes and rip it apart. Who knows? The older version of the Chuckit squeaky ball was his favorite for the year and a half he had it, but the way they make them now, he peels off the orange triangle in hours flat, the squeaker falls out (choking hazard), and then he rips it apart. I’m going to stock up on these. I can’t imagine how crazy he will be if they ever stop production or change the materials.

Perfect for my dog
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
My dog (16 lb) LOVES to whip her toys around and throw them in the air to chase after them. This is the perfect toy for her to play outside by herself. I would repurchase for her over and over again if needed!
