Feijoa sellowiana, commonly known as the pineapple guava or candyfruit, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the highlands of southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. It typically grows 3 to 6 meters tall, with dense, spreading branches and thick, leathery, gray-green leaves that are silvery-white underneath, giving the plant a distinctive, ornamental appearance. The flowers are edible, with white petals tinged pink and a cluster of long, red stamens that attract pollinators such as bees and birds. Blooming in late spring to early summer, these flowers are followed by oval, green fruits with a distinctive fragrance and a flavor that combines hints of pineapple, guava, and strawberry. The fruit ripens in autumn and can be eaten fresh, scooped from its slightly gritty flesh, or used in jellies, desserts, and beverages. Feijoa sellowiana thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, showing good drought tolerance once established and moderate resistance to cold, making it a popular choice for subtropical and Mediterranean climates. In addition to its ornamental and edible value, the plant is also grown as a hedge or windbreak, prized for its resilience, beauty, and versatility in landscape design.

Growing Instructions

1. Put a mixture of potting soil and sand or perlite into a pot with drainage holes in the base. The soil should be moist and well-drained. It is better to use a sterile growing medium to prevent dampening off.  2. Sow the seeds on the soil. 3. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 4. Water the seeds. Keep the soil moist but not wet. The seeds take three weeks to germinate. 5. When the plants are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.

Birdies Cracked Corn, And I Don’t Care
Style: Wild Bird Food, Style: Wild Bird Food
I bought Wagner’s Farmer’s Delight Wild Bird Food hoping to attract a few cardinals and maybe a blue jay or two. Mission accomplished — the birds absolutely demolished this stuff like it was an all-you-can-eat buffet with Michelin stars. What I wasn’t expecting was to accidentally start my own agricultural operation. Apparently the cracked corn in the mix has decided my lawn is now zoned for farming. I currently have random corn stalks sprouting in places I didn’t even know seeds could reach. At this rate, I’ll be harvesting feed for next season directly from my backyard. So yes, the birds love it. The squirrels approve. My yard has become part aviary, part Midwest cornfield. Five stars.
