Sweet, pineapple-flavored, lemon-colored ground cherries on short plants (12-18"). Ground cherries are sweet cousins to tomatoes and tomatillos. Kids of all ages love finding tiny wrapped packages and eating the yellow fruits like candy right in the garden, or several weeks later in fruit salad or over ice cream, as they store well in their husks. Naturally high in pectin, they make great preserves and pies as well.

Days to maturity: 60

Seeds per pack: 100

Germination rate: 96% on 01/24/2025

Planting / harvesting notes

Sow indoors 1/4" deep around 6 weeks before the last frost date. Germination can take as long as 20 days, but can be sooner if set on a heat mat with a temperature between 75 and 80 degrees F. Transplant in the garden in rows about every 18"-24". Plants will form blousy bushes like tomatillos. Keep well weeded until they fill in the space in order to best find the fallen fruits later in the season; some growers put down weed barriers (plastic, cloth, or newspaper) under the plants to prevent those weeds and more easily see the fallen fruits. Harvest when the husks turn brown and the fruits are yellow. For winter use, store the fruits unhusked in a dry, airy place (like a basket). To eat, remove the husk and eat the yellow fruit raw or bake in pies or stew with sugar for jam.

Note: Unripe, green ground cherries and their leaves and husks are bitter and toxic. Do not eat!

Seed keeping notes

Ground cherries are self-pollinating, but different varieties of the P. pruinosa should be isolated by several hundred feet to prevent unwanted cross-pollination. Seeds are ready for harvest when fruit is ripe. A single fruit can have 100 seeds! You can remove seeds by hand, rinse, and dry. We use a blender on the lowest setting with plenty of water. When the fruits have been broken open, pour the mixture into a large container and add water. Allow the fruits to float and the seeds to sink. Pour off everything except the seed (you may have to add more water and repeat this process a few times) and then strain and rinse the seeds, and dry. However, you may never need to replant ground cherries after your first year - they tend to reseed themselves!

What Do I Do When My DIL Wants to Cut Me Out of Her Life Along with My Granddaughter?
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Answer to my question in my Review Title: I pray and God provided me this book! I just finished reading it, and I just couldn't wait to write this review! I highly recommending reading this book, if you are having any problems with your adult children, especially chapters 9-11. For me, like the title says, I didn't know what to do when my DIL said, "... I will be stepping back from contact for the foreseeable future. This includes cards, letters, gifts, or other communication unless I say otherwise." Since receiving that text message in December 2025, I have been praying about what to do. Just last week, my son texted me some very angry text messages, even demanding that I delete all virtual pictures of my granddaughter and giving him all my physical pictures of her (which I will do because of Matthew 5:38-42)! What amazing timing though to be reading this book! Praise God! My son has not closed the door yet on our relationship, so I have hope that I can implement some of the ideas in this book! See photo to see my notes (i.e. questions) that I wrote from the book that I could possibly ask him, if he is willing to meet with me. I pray that he does. Thank you SO much, Dr. Kathy, for writing this book! God is using you and your ministry. God bless you.

Timeless Wisdom with Real Action Steps
Format: Paperback
I was blessed to read this book prelease and am delighted to share that this book is a must read for all parents with adult children. Dr. Kathy provides very helpful insight in first understanding the foundations of the relationship based on the core needs of the parent and the child. Her explanations are very convicting but I don't feel condemned for previous shortcomings; rather I feel inspired to improve and apologize. I particularly appreciate the realistic action steps and examples of actual words to think/speak in the first person so I can retrain myself to think, speak, and relate to my children. Dr. Kathy equips readers by providing step by step explanations of 1) What to do; 2) Why it works and; 3) How to do it . It is brilliant and so helpful. However, she does not provide false hope because sometimes love is not enough in the case of prodigals and she shares Truth with parents and acknowledges the the very real pain and loneliness that can result then follows-up with real action steps and reminds us of our hope in Christ. As always, the wisdom in the book is timeless and can be applied across multiple relationships in life including my relationship with my own parents where I am the child and even in communicating with my husband. I am grateful for the Celebrate Kids ministry and Dr. Kathy. I am constantly learning something new and am grateful.

Real action steps. You will love this book!
Format: Paperback
If you have adult children, I promise you will be blessed by this book. So many times books have good insight, but then when life happens, it is easy to forget the wisdom of the book. This book is different. It has real actionable steps that you can take to help parents let go of their children. As we raise little people, it’s easy to wrap your identity up in your family life. This book helped me see where I was still finding identity in my kids and how to make sure that we are finding our identity and healthier ways. She includes a Declaration of Release in the book. Reading it brought tears to my eyes. It made me realize it’s OK to grieve the young family we once had but also to embrace my growing and maturing adult children. I want to have a healthy relationship with my kids and their spouses and I’m confident this book is like a very wise friend offering advice and walking this path with me. I was blessed to read a free copy of the ebook but I’ve already purchased my own paper copy of the book so I can make notes and refer back to it more easily.

A little too strong on religion and preachy, which I could have done without.
