Sealed-Style Terrarium: What That Means

This terrarium is designed to hold humidity and create a stable microclimate—perfect for moss gardens and many tropical plants. In a sealed-style setup, moisture naturally cycles: water evaporates, condenses on the glass, and returns to the soil. If you're new to this style, our complete terrarium setup and planting guide walks through the full process step by step.

Feature Sealed-Style Terrarium Open Terrarium
Humidity Higher humidity, moisture retention Lower humidity, dries out faster
Best plants Moss, fittonia, small ferns, tropical cuttings Many succulents & cacti
Watering Less frequent; monitor condensation More frequent; monitor soil dryness
Maintenance Occasional ventilation if over-condensing Regular watering + faster plant turnover

Plant Suggestions for a Sealed-Style Setup

  • Moss (excellent for humidity and a finished look)
  • Fittonia (nerve plant)
  • Miniature ferns
  • Small tropical cuttings
  • Mini orchids (only if your light and airflow are appropriate)

Avoid harsh direct sunlight. Glass can magnify heat quickly and stress plants.

Materials & Care

Simple Layering Method

  1. Add a thin layer of pea gravel for drainage.
  2. Mix in a small handful of activated charcoal to help keep the terrarium fresh.
  3. Add soil to nearly fill the tray (leave room for moss or top dressing).
  4. Plant gently, tamping soil to remove air pockets.
  5. Water very lightly—sealed-style terrariums need less water than most people expect.

How to Know If You Watered Correctly

  • Light, temporary condensation (especially after planting) is normal.
  • If the glass stays heavily fogged for days, open briefly to vent and allow excess moisture to escape.
  • If soil looks dry and there’s no condensation at all, add small sips of water.

If you run into issues like fogging, mold, or plant decline, our terrarium condensation, mold, and watering guide and long-term terrarium care guide offer detailed troubleshooting.

Seasonal Styling & Display Ideas

  • Minimalist: moss + one focal plant for a clean, modern look
  • Woodland vibe: moss + small stones + natural textures
  • Event décor: elegant centerpiece for weddings, showers, and dinner parties
  • Refresh anytime: swap plants and textures as seasons change—no need to replace the terrarium

FAQ

Is this a sealed terrarium?

This terrarium is considered sealed-style, meaning it is designed to hold humidity and support a stable microclimate. Moisture can naturally cycle inside the terrarium, reducing the need for frequent watering.

How often should I water a sealed-style terrarium?

Start with a very light watering after planting. After that, watering is typically infrequent—monitor soil moisture and condensation. If the glass is heavily fogged for days, vent briefly. If the soil dries out, add small sips of water.

What plants work best?

Moss, fittonia (nerve plant), miniature ferns, and small tropical cuttings are popular choices for a sealed-style setup. Avoid harsh direct sun and choose plants with similar moisture needs.

What comes with the terrarium?

You’ll receive the handcrafted glass terrarium, metal tray base, and a plastic liner. Plants, moss, stones, and décor props are not included.

Where are H Potter terrariums made?

H Potter items are manufactured at our partnered factory in India. Glass terrariums are handcrafted in India and China.

Powerful and unsettling.
Format: Kindle
This classic by James Cone is a challenge to anyone who thinks it is easy to be Christian in America. It should be read by all white people. The god of the bible is the god of oppressed people. Ask yourself who is oppressed in america. Follow that question to its logical conclusion and you will see why this book is a must read.

The Genesis of Black Theology
James Cone’s initial foray into the intentional development of a black theology ought be required reading for any serious Christian theologian. It challenges long-standing Christian claims by challenging not so much the claims themselves, but the racist presuppositions to those claims. The language is contextual, I suspect, offensive to many. But the language is effective in illuminating the racist presuppositions. Read with a critical eye, one can indeed find under-developed theological claims that could bear sharpened revision. But as with any first revolutionary theological work, the brilliance lies in the courageous and compelling insight that demands personal reflection and dare I say ... theological modification.

Powerful Book
Format: Paperback
Okay, so this was written in the 60’s at the height of the civil rights movement. Given that, you might expect the arguments to be a little dated. Not so. This reflects brilliance of Cone and the failure of America to make real progress. I found Cone’s book to be a damning comment on today’s churches. As a white Protestant I’m ashamed that my church hasn’t embraced more of Cone’s argument. As a Lutheran, we’ve done better than most, but we have more to do. Professor Cone’s work should be required reading for all seminarians and church leaders.

It's Tight but Mostly Right
It is prophetic for it continues to in the here and now. The language is harsh and often accusatory. Great amount of time spent on the oppressor...but not so much on the oppressor with blacks themselves. I do believe White mite learn a thing or two about black oppression. I do believe black should refresh our memory of the need to come together as a nation of the same hue to give America a clue about the blacks from God's point of view.
