Coffea Arabica, also known as the coffee plant, is an elegant houseplant with glossy, dark green leaves. This plant not only adds ambiance to your interior but also acts as a natural air purifier. Thanks to its exotic appearance, the coffee plant fits perfectly into both modern and classic interior styles. Discover how easy it is to care for this tropical beauty at home and combine it with other green favorites like our Ficus Lyrata or the robust Monstera Minima .

Many enthusiasts choose Coffea Arabica because it grows relatively steadily and doesn't spread too quickly. Perfect for those new to plant care. With proper care, you can enjoy a healthy coffee plant for years to come, and perhaps even your own coffee beans. A good pot is essential for the best start; so also check out our pots for houseplants and high-quality soil from our potting soil and accessories collection .

How to care for a Coffea Arabica

Watering – Coffea Arabica

Coffea Arabica prefers even moisture in its potting soil. Water your coffee plant regularly, but avoid allowing the roots to sit in standing water. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again to prevent root rot. Watering is needed slightly more frequently in the summer than during the colder winter months.

Light – Coffea Arabica

A bright location with indirect sunlight is ideal for Coffea Arabica. Too much direct sunlight can cause yellowing leaves, while too little light can slow growth. Therefore, place your coffee plant a few meters away from an east- or west-facing window. This way, it will receive sufficient light without burning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Coffea Arabica poisonous?

Coffea Arabica is not poisonous to humans, but the coffee beans do contain caffeine and can cause side effects if ingested. Keep pets and small children away from the berries or beans to prevent unwanted poisoning. Generally, you can safely enjoy this plant indoors, as long as you focus only on the leaves and stem.

Other Coffea species

There are several species within the Coffea family, each with its own characteristics. Are you considering a variety or a small coffee plant garden at home? These are popular species:

  • Coffea robusta
  • Coffea liberica
  • Coffea canephora
  • Coffea arabica var. Bourbon
  • Coffea arabica var. Typica
  • Coffea arabica var. Geisha
  • Coffea arabica var. Caturra
  • Coffea seedlings from our aromatic coffee growing set

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves often indicate overwatering or insufficient light. First, check the soil moisture; overly wet soil requires fewer waterings. If necessary, move the plant to a location with indirect light. Remove damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth.

Plant dripping

If you notice your Coffea Arabica is dripping, it could be due to overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure excess water can drain through the drainage holes and use a pot with a saucer. Adjust your watering: water less frequently but consistently.

Plagues

Spider mites, aphids, and scale insects can sometimes infest your coffee plant. Check the undersides of the leaves weekly. Treat emerging pests promptly with a mild insecticide or use our sticky traps to prevent large-scale infestations .

Roots emerge from the bottom of the pot

When the roots are visible at the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot. Choose a pot one size larger and fresh, airy potting soil. Our sewer-safe potting soil and accessories will help keep your roots healthy. For best results, repot in spring.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown leaf edges often indicate air that is too dry or not enough water. Coffea Arabica prefers high humidity: place it on a tray with hydroponic clays and water, or use a plant sprayer. If possible, increase the humidity with our jungle mist spray . This will keep the leaves beautiful and firm.

Good value and quality.
Style: Tuggi Hide
Great for sports dog and building drive. This isn’t a chew toy to let a dog shred. I have big dogs that love to tug, and this has held up to a huge amount of use with high drivey dogs.

Good quality! Great reward for my search and rescue dogs!
Style: Tuggi Ball
My dogs love this! The bungee makes it easier on my shoulder and my dog enjoys it a lot. Super lightweight which is important for taking it on searches. Holds up to my intense working dog’s tug sessions *note that it is an interactive toy not a chew toy. Probably wouldn’t last long if you just give it to them to play on their own but perfect for a good game of tug

Fun for a short while
Style: Chase & Crinkle, Style: Chase & Crinkle
4 month old GSD puppy loved this toy but it did not last long before getting a whole in the crinkle part. I even limited the amount of play my dog had with it so I could increase the value of the toy to use it for distractions.

Not for low food-drive dogs
Style: Chase & Treat
Not the right toy for us but maybe for others. Seems durable and is on the more affordable side. However, the Velcro is so strong that it’s difficult and/or uncomfortable for our dog to open it. May be better suited for a more food-driven dog.

Multi variant review!
Style: Tuggi Ball
Coachi Tuggi Ball - Great handle, ball is too big for puppies for sure and unsure on how about the hardness, it is hard, like a hard styrofoam Chase and Krinkle - excellent, buy. Soft for puppies to latch on and the fur plus krinkle keeps them super engaged. Great handle too. Length, you can play with Felt tugs are good too. These have been good minus the ball tug lulz
